Basic civil rights for any minority should not be put up to popular vote. These protestors and opponents of Question #1 used lies, scare tactics, & hate to promote their bigotry.
Nothing that was done by these "Yes on #1" campaigners was Christian, and definitely not anything Jesus would've done. Bigots & hypocrites that attend a fascist 'House of Hate' on Sundays.
@MrEastsidekids You are the demon & the evil one. God is ashamed of you. If you don't like 'gay marriage', don't marry a gay person. Please say you don't have children because your killing their minds with your hate & lies. If you do, someone should call CPS and have them taken away from you. You're evil & ignorant.
If popular votes are so important, let's get one on the ballot to elliminate the tax exempt status of churches. Think of all the extra revenue!! But that wouldn't work because supporters would be accused of attacking the church. Amazing how widespread hypocrisy is.
Perfectly put. The fundamentalists are big time hypocrites. Not allowing one law abiding segment of the population the same rights as another segment, is unconstitutional.
@Permaglo I am not trying to be an a-hole however are we going to disregard the smaller churches that rely COMPLETELY on the influx of money from their attendants. And if you tax the money you give to the church how will one stay a float. I understand wanting to tax larger denominations because they have the support of a larger system. But to grant one and not the other is absurd.
As already stated by many others, this bill does not force any religious group or institution to recognize same sex marriage. That is a lie, right wing propoganda.
The statistics mentioned also don't take into account the bandwagon mentality that is developing around the country (the same poll from the same organization showed a 9% increase in support for gay marriage since the events in Iowa and New England).
The people's veto may reach the ballot, but it won't pass. Maine is about 16% less religious then California, and Prop. 8 passed by only 52.2%. It is also one year later, so this year it would likely have passed by less then 51%. Whites/Asians are shown to be the most open to gay marriage (51% of each voted against Prop. 8). Maine is like 98% white (and again, this year 52-53% of whites would vote against Prop. 8).
Gay marriage does not "force" anything on anyone. It opens greater access to who can marry. It is "sharing." The people of Maine are generally kind and sharing, and their representatives must reflect that. Being good is not an oppression. Bigotry is oppression and it is forcing religious views on the public. Christians want to vote so that they can force their believes on homosexuals to hurt homosexuals by denying them equality. We see through that California smile to sickness underneath.
Very true- This nation is supposed to be a republic. republic meaning we elect officials to represent our wants and needs in assembly. Not elect officials for us and then cry when they don't vote on everything the way we want them to.
"The people of Maine are not being allowed to have a say in this rather they are having it forced on them by politicians that are concerned not for the people of Maine, but for advancing their own political careers. Sickening."
What's "sickening" is the idea of the civil rights of a minority (ANY minority) being put up for a popular vote.
The bill does not force religious institutions to recognize or perform same sex marriage. And there are people that STILL want to stop it. How selfish is that. And these are the people that claim that gay marriage supporters are the "intolerant" ones.
Damn those activist judges! Damn those activist...uh...legislatures that I voted for...wow and damn, ummmm...almost 50 percent of the people of this country who support gay marriage? what? 1/2 the country are activist? what kind of a world do we live in! LOL
Image if it were 1967 and we were talking anti-miscegenation laws went up for a vote of the majority. A vast majority do not care one way or the other. Yet BIGOTS keep telling LIES and FRIGHTENING people. Its UNBELIEVABLE that in the land of the free we would legalize discrimination!
Gay marriage forces nothing. The people of Maine have decided to share marriage, and adding same sex couples subtracts nothing. A kind, compassionate and deeply Christian thing to do. Helping gay families and their children demonstrates just how good the citizens of Maine are. They live their compassion, and have a deep respect for the Equal Protection guarantees of America. They are allowing "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all!"
I am pro-gay and often find your stories hostile to gay issues. However, I think your coverage was "less hostile" this time. Notice I didn't say neutral. However, I want to applaud your progress on trying to be more professional
why? marriage is not run by he church and they were not the first to start MArriage. religions that were around before Christianity start marriage. Plus it is governments that give out marriage licenses. People only get married in churches because is a tradition thing. People can get married outside and in other buildings today.
The Japs bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on Dec. 7, 1941 for some reason. Maybe...1. They had extra bombs. 2. They were trying to bomb pearls to the harbor's surface. 3. They were bent on killing Americans & sinking their ships.
hmm. All my history professors i have had say the Japanese were not bombing pearl harbor iteslf. They were only trying to bomb the Naval fleet that was stationed at Pearal harbor.

You can't "force" gay marriage - you knob! You can still have a heterosexual marriage - you won't be forced into a gay marriage, so don't panic.

What a dumbass, "forces" gay marriage, what, are they forcing you to marry someone?
Don't like equal rights, then you might as well go and fuck yourself and your dumbass medieval religious faith
