  • The wallpaper on your phone explains a lot of your hobbies. Why do a lot of Mathematicians get into horticulture I wonder?

  • @almaitonn not just flourishes but trick

  • his face at 6:02!

  • i dont want to sound dumb but how do you rate videos?

  • you're awesome :D

  • It is interesting, that I am 14 years old, with almost the same hobbys and interests as you. Rubiks cube, programming (although i dont know Python, but I know almost all web page programming languages like HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, MySQL, including Flash, so ActionScript 3, and I am learning C++), Math, Physics...

About useless skills, try card flourishes... they are soo cool :D

  • OMG WTF Meph I have the exact same juggling balls LOL why I am posting this when this video is like 2 years old but lol that's funny. Meph's puzzle skills for the win.

  • Haha, you can do so much useless stuff :D . Pen spinning, juggling and all that

  • I learned pogbats beginners method, and I really wish I would of hearted his, but I was able in about under a month of cubing to get my time to 1:02. I havent really had any problem switching over to fridrich but I assume it would have been easier if I had used his version.

  • Omg. These are all things I want to know how to do

    Juggling

    DIce stacking.

  • I learned Pogobat's method first and when I first strated I could do it in sub 4 minutes, then I actually memorized the algorithms. Then I had a sub 2 and now i use Fridrich, and I have about 1:16

  • i just want to thank you for all the videos

i have been learning the fridrich method, i still have some troubles to memorize the algs but the video really helps

by the way i am a juggler to !

  • I can juggle 7 balls! And I can cube!

  • BADME!!!!!! Your best :)

  • i completely agree with you about pogobat's video.

  • i also got 1 of those sudoku cubes, but i popped a few pieces out to lubricate it and now it's porbably unsolvable

  • I can't put my finger on why your videos are so interesting. Perhaps it is because I am a little nerdy?

  • I like your V perm. (alot actually)

  • @sugarrayrox hate it! hate it! Haaaaaate! >:(

  • @badmephisto my V-perm: L' U R U' L U L' U R' U' L U2 R U2 R'

it gives me BROOKLYN RAGE, because its slower than some of my G-series.

  • @mynameisdarthtater gosh i use that V perm too and i hate it!

  • @wvb93 i just re-learnt V perm as R' U R' d' R' F' R2 U' R' U R' F R F

the next like 5 or 6 moves after the d' feel a whole lot like a T Perm, then its just an ituitive solve the rest of the way. the F at the end feels weird though, because there's no good fingertrick for it.

  • @badmephisto i have a great 3 gen (rul) alg if u want

  • Your information is very useful

  • Cool I can juggle 5.I'm glad your are now into juggling

  • You sir.... are a beast.

  • pogobats video was actually REALLY easy to understand (but you have to think smart, no offense :P), but then it took a while for me to learn fridrich, so thats the downside. but personally, in speedcubing, your videos are legit

  • nice backround on your iphone

  • " i'm a winner" lol i thought that comment was so funny

  • Do you work at Google?

  • hahaha that is awesome...i never thought i would find another cuber that is in to pen spinning...you should find out how to make your own mod...i use a rsvp mx mainly because i can find the parts for it in the U.S.

  • i dont like the Ns but E perm is ok...

  • i actally like the v and f perms badmephisto tells us to use it has a nice finger trick except for the d that slows it down but after that one move its faster

  • u dont make any videos i feel like unsuscribing u

  • Your totally right.

And I will tell all of my friends to check out your videos and rate them 5 stars. :)

  • Dan Brown made a new and improved easier to follow tutorial

    so there!

  • *lot*

  • now its 4097

u rok my time from 3min

    came down to 34 secs

    after watching ur vds

    thnx a lont

  • i couldnt help laughing at the other things you have been doing. They are the sort of things i do whilst waiting for something to download or a webpage to load, so it suits you perfectly xD

Try card throwing - thats a lot of fun, and you never loose the skill once you have it.

  • For the PLL R(a) i use the following alg :

    R U R' F' R U2 R' U2 R' F R U R U2 R' U'

It's pretty and i think it's better than the one you have on your website.

  • LOL- I also cube, juggle and yo-yo.

I like how you made fun of that Dan Brown dude's site. His method was the first one I learned and it sucked. And Dan (pogobat) is annoying.

  • You should try the Iphone app Unblock Me, I've killed hundreds of hours with that puzzle at work, it has quite similar mechanics to the app you showed... I'm very thankful for your videos, especially the first f2l, that one really got me cubing for real... I'll head over and rate your beginner's video right away...

  • ya, i do think so. Dan is way too fast.

  • I'd definitely be interested seeing some programming videos. I thought your Tetris AI looked was very good and I'd very much like to learn how to create something like that myself.

    Good luck in the future.

  • was that a picture of weed on your iphone? lol

  • "I also want to be able to eat with my right hand while I solve with my left." Lol

  • you and thrawst have the best tuorials and videos. the westonian has good material but presentation sux xD. so please make some more videos. id like to learn the roux method by u if u know it want to learn it

  • Have you ever got a request for the roux method? You should.

  • yeah pogobat's video's... sucked. (sorry pogobat =D) i saw it an im like WTF's a U'?????? but anyways i saw Rob's beginner videos before yours, but same thing, right? you have lots of good videos on advanced methods that i am currently watching :)

  • Meph, I believe I've mentioned this to you before, but another factor in the search algorithm on YouTube is whether or not the video is a "partner video" or not (meaning enabled for revenue sharing). Those take precedence over others when it comes to search, but I will go and rate your video 5 stars since it was very good :-D Also, cool to see that you're starting to juggle, which I also really enjoy :-) nice wallpaper too :-P

    -Rob

  • youre totaly right about pogobat's video.. i saw it before i saw yours and i wish i saw yours first..

  • LOL this is the FUNNIEST vid of CUBING ever :)

Hey can you put some geometry stuff on ur math ch by any chance x] since l need help lol :D

  • GOOGLE CUP!

  • so pogobats vids are "good" just because he is popular? so everything is good if it's popular?

Can't be true. I'm sure you know some important guys in history that are still that popular that the whole world knows them but they are not good for sure.

I'm sure that people that are totaly unknown may make very good vids and tutorials, too.

  • nonononono, you didn't get it...

I said the video is good, not the explanation.

The fact that a famous person makes a video about cubing is good because it attracts atention to this great hobby.

I think there are millions of better tutorials here, and meph's one is just one of the best I've seen.

  • I like your V.

Look at my Ra alg(i named it Rb)

    Look at my F

Look at my E its not the best but just look at it.

  • Btw try to stick more to cubing, becuase with so many "hobbys" you can't master hem all.....

  • pen spinnig will be quite easy for somebody who solve cubes(me), more flexible fingers maybe? penspinning requires more training n pratience than cubing in my opinion and had been spinning for abt 9 months, cubing for abt 7

  • make a video of your other skills.

  • Dude! You must listen. At around 2:25 you mentioned something about getting youtube to realize 'this'. Well, you know what? Once we have AI, youtube WILL realize. MWHAHAA

  • Thx for sharing & Lol at the end *suckss*

  • dan browns video wasnt bad, in fact, without him alot of cubers wouldnt be here now (like me). it didnt confuse me at least.

  • your tutorials are the best

  • my record on the 15 puzzle is 25s ;)

  • im not sure y some ppl think tht pogobat's 'rubik's cube tutorial' is a good video....his way of teaching is good, but only advanced cubers can teach (since they hv more experience) like badmephisto.

pogobat averages like 55 seconds.....thts intermediate...which is good but a person averaging sub20 would know much more....

i originally learnt from him....and thts why it took me time to switch to fridrich, which badmephisto taught me (i now average sub27, which isnt good for my level)

  • I love Dan Browns Videos. All of them. I did learn origanally from his Video. But i do like what you have done with the diagrams etc.

  • hey i dont like pogobat, but this specific reference of yours about his bad video makes me think that you don't like him too! i cant see any other reason!

  • Heehee... I think you're so cuuute~

  • love u man! your tutorial is VERY CLEAR n HELPFUL!

  • I luv ure site :)

  • i am finally average 18-20sec

Thank you I will rate all your videos and of course your subscribers!!

Your videos endings are always funny haha 5/5

  • i luv the ending

"this video has to be deleted"

    haha! amazing!

  • yeah i picked up yo yoing too :]

  • N Perm (FRU only)

    F' [RUR'U'] R' F R2 {F} U' R' U' R U F' R'

-> Fingertrick: do the {F} with your thumb and probaly the last F' too

HOW TO DO THE SODOKU CUBE:

solve all pieces exept the centers.

than use PLLs to permute the centers.

For exaple if u do the J Perm twice it will rotate the center 180°.

and doing the U Perm three times will rotate it 90°

  • yea i'll rate the other one

  • Dude, you're just a wonderful man

  • ok badmephisto your freakin awsome kinda funny everything that youve picked up doing ive done or can do except the 15 puzzle thats how freakin awsome you are, lol

  • hey Meph you have helped me decreasing my average from 30 to 17 sec now. I'm grateful to you and I will rate all your videos....!!!!!!

  • Pogobat's tutorial does work and and unlike yours is not as easily read unless you really pay attention to it. I did learn his method first and do apply some (one usually) of his methods when I speedcube using the beginner's method but that's because I get the same results because they use similar algorithms.

  • One that i use semi infrequently is his alg for placing the second layer only when the cube is flipped because then i can do a U2 to place it in position to use you method. and the other is his method to get the yellow cross on the top to start going into getting all yellows on top. Though his method uses a lot more looking which murders times,

  • wow meph you really do have a lot of time on your hands XD and ofcourse it was the pens fault because inanimate objects hate you ^-^ anyway heres a great way to do the N plls cuz that N(a) pll is so horrible, I mean it just kills me on the inside XD

    N(a) (L U' R) U2 (L' U R') | (L U' R) U2 (L' U R') U'

    N(b) (R' U L') U2 (R U' L) | (R' U L') U2 (R U' L) U'

Add the first one to your site, I'm pretty sure you have the second one although theyre just reflections

  • lol, nice video :) for rotating the centres on the su-do-kube, just use the T perm twice to rotate 180 degrees or the 3 edge cycle to rotate 90 degrees.

  • Holy crap we have like the exact same hobbies!!! I got into cubeing a while back, followed by yoyoing and 15 puzzle.

i've also picked up some ocarina playing and have often thought about getting into juggling and dice stacking. i've also taken several programming classes, although im better at the adobe programs.

  • get a real mod :D

  • When you said you picked up some new things, I thought you should pick up a yoyo. Then, the die comes out, and I could tell it was the one that comes with the Freehand. You then talk about dicestaking. What a bummer. Then, your yoyos come out!

You should check out the videos I have of me yoyoing. You might say Im as good at yoyoing as you are at cubing.

Anyway, I just got a cube like 2 weeks ago. My best time is 1:10. Not very good, but Im learning. Your videos have definitely helped, thanks!

  • 1:10 in two weeks!? thats amazing! it took me a few MONTHS to get that far.

now two(three?) years later im just getting to the 35 second mark.

  • Well, that is still good in my book. I guess it just depends on how much you practice and whatnot.

Right now, Im learning the Fridrich method. I know once I learn it well enough, my times will greatly improve.

  • Amazing... pretty much all of those random skills are stuff that I've tried. I think you should look into cup stacking or spintops, too as they are both things that are pretty cool.

  • YES! i was waiting for pen spinning to come up. ^.^

  • hey! badmephisto, thanks for all your awsome vids on cubing, it really helped when you explained how important few cube rotations were in f2l, my average solve is just under 40 seconds... not good, but im working on it, and are you going to toronto for the canadian open in september? please reply

  • thank you. i cant, i just moved to vancouver. :(

  • 4:04 i still love u.

    i luv tht part

  • pogobat is not a good cuber. and his video is confusing

  • yep u right!

  • Pen Spinning for the win! If you want to know more about it or have some questions to ask, feel free to contact me. And congratz of nice number of subs :)

  • you're not. but its not pot

  • Okay so I have an algorithm for rotating two centers at once. It'll help with the Sudoku cube. This one rotates the F center peice clockwise, while rotating R counterclockwise.

    M U M' E M U' M' E'

Just work with it for a bit and see what it does. Works very well.

  • thanks :)

  • @badmephisto To turn the up face 180 degrees, use U L U L' 5 times.

  • hey badmephisto! if you want to know more about pen spinning just ask.

  • 5:55 = truth

  • why dont u try solving v-cubes? its fun and easy to learn in Rob's channel

  • i solve the vcubes... i can solve all large cubes.

  • Awesome video. Haha, you always seem so professional in your other vids, this one made you look.. human :D with all the funny sounds when pen spinning etc.

  • wow i love to juggle,

the only thing you need to add to that pointless skills collection is ping pong. then you will be a master at pointless skills.

i still need to learn to get some epic pen spinning skills

  • Funny you should say that because I used to play ping pong competitively representing my town

  • about***

  • How tutorials on other puzzles like the 4x4 rubik revenge and etc?

  • I put vaseline in my cube at pogobat's recommendation.

Glad to hear you bought a web host!

  • first off...I have already learned to juggle, 15 puzzle, suduko cubes, yoyos, and pen spinning...and now you can do it too...seems we are even more similar than i thought.

Secondly...Why do you wear a watch on the right hand?

  • I wear a watch on my left hand and I'm left handed, my friend wears his watch on his right hand...

  • The background to your iPhone looks like a weed leaf.

  • Pogobat's video isn't very good, it certainly confused me when I was a beginner!

    Also: hurrah pen spinning!

  • haha love it!

  • guess you'd like to play diabolo

    it's a lot of fun

i don't think so bad about pogobats tutorial

its not good for learning fast cubing, but for just solving the cube it wasn't to bad

but of course; when i picked up videos like yours and westonians it was kind of mindblowing :D

  • At the beginning of the video, I had a feeling that you would mention pen spinning because I was thinking of Shotaro Makisumi, who is a speedcuber and started pen spinning.

  • Than you guys for the ratings.

After you guys rated, the video jumped instantly to position #2 on the search results, but then shortly after it fell back down to page 4... I don't really understand how that works

  • Okay, his video was VERY good. I didn't quite realize this beacause I type slow so

  • I edned up learning from Pogobat's videos, but many times I got frustrated and was convincd that I would never learn the cube, because it was so hard to learn. It was also hard to learn how to speedcube, because his video is not a good video, and makes it hard to learn to speedcube. Don't get me wrong, his videos now are some of my favorate non-cubing videos now, and I have subscribed to him!

  • You have my vote my friend!

  • love the end haha

  • Comment removed

  • ha ha your busy! ha

  • Yeah i learnt how to cube off your channel. and ill agree it doesnt help pick up the ladies...

  • Well, I got to know my current girlfriend by teaching her to do the cube...

  • nice pot leaf for an iphone backround

  • i learnt with pogobats method, and i found it to be easy enough to follow but then i saw your begginer video and it was much easier

  • And I like your iPhone bg.

  • thanks :) I change the background up all the time. I wish I could get more backgrounds, is there like a site for it? hm

  • Check Erik Akkersdijk's permutations video. His N2 perm is WAY better.

  • great to see more people into penspinning

  • 'All these things.... really get the ladies'

    LOL

  • i learned how to solve the cube using pogobats vid and i thought it was simple for the most part i jus wish he worked harder at explaining the last layer better otherwise it was fine

  • i have a H perm one handed alg, not so good for two hand but: R2 U2 R U2 R2 U2 R2 U2 R U2 R2

  • Make a pen spinning tutorial!!! =P

  • YEAH. RIGHT. haha!

I'll teach my single trick :D

No but really I have no idea how I would even go about teaching something like pen spinning... I know people do it but it doesnt make any sense... its just muscle memory. I dont know

  • wow I first learned how to solve a rubiks cube got up to 20 secs with you videos got bored with it larned yoyo a bit juggleing penspining and now i am learning dicestacking

  • i found pogobat way before i found ur channel, so i had 2 figure it out from watching pogobat's video a few times, and cheating to solve it the first time... lol

but from trying to teach people to solve a cube myself, i hv learned that they are very lazy, and they dont want to watch 20 minutes of video (pogobat's length). idk hw long urs is, and i doubt thers a solution to laziness, i just thought i'd put that out there.. lol

and im very interested in this math channel :D

    +yay iphone

  • well my video is about 24 minutes. Its honestly not that much. If people dont have enough patience to spare 30 minutes on learning a RUBIKS CUBE, then they wont have enough patience to learn any of the algs later on, and will never become speedcubers anyway.

  • it took me over a year to switch to fridrich because of pogobats video i finally found a way to learn fridrich about 2 months ago

  • although your vid was better i think pogobat does deserve all his subscribers cuz he is very interesting on his regular videos

  • so i expect videos on juggling, you getting ladies, yo yo's, and all that :P

  • lol pen spinning

  • wow you succeded at a lot of the same things as me. although i gave up on the pen spinning. . . =P

  • they suck... suck suck suck...

  • He in his Canadian Open vid for a few seconds. :)

  • Put up a juggling video! I wonder what you use to hold your camera...

  • He attaches his webcam to his headphones.

  • Oh, Thanks!

  • juggling ftw!(:

and my plls suck too, lol.

  • i also disagree about pogobats video being bad. i only had to watch the video once, went out the next day to buy i cube, and i could solve it. i think the only people who get confused are the morons who shouldnt be doing it anyways.

    your video is better though

and i recently picked up yo-yoing too, and i know a lot of cubers who dice stack, juggle, and yoyo

  • I disagree with what you said about Pogobat regarding his 3x3. I thought it was good and I learned how to solve a 3x3x3 after about 3 hours with no previous cubing experience. After doing some more research on how to get faster, I found your more advanced 3x3x3 videos through google and I no longer use his method. I found his 4x4x4 video to be very confusing though.

  • yeah you spin pens now!!!!!!!!!!

  • damn you did the 15 puzzle fast :P

i played it a few times on my friends' iphone and i take like.. 2 mins at least lol

and i'll look forward to videos of you doing your pen spinning and juggling and dice stacking etc :P (if you make some :D )

  • I love your view on pogobats stupid video

  • man, yo-yo's are so much fun, and surprisingly hazardous.

  • 2^12!! Wooo!!

And some lady getting skills I possess that you might be able to use:

    Programming

    Cubing

    Calculus

    Pattern Analysis

    and...Logic!

  • YEA!

    chicks dig LOGIC.

  • yay u picked up penspinning :D

    awesome ^^

  • Comment removed

  • You should make a random stuff video, where you show your yo-yoing, pen spinning, and whatnot.

I tell my friends to watch your video to learn to solve the rubik's cube. I also mention to not listen to pogobat. When I first started cubing, I watched his tutorial and had to relearn a lot of things. I didn't even know about fridrich until I looked up the only other method I knew of: petrus. Vaseline also destroyed my cube, and I had to buy another.

  • thats a good idea! I might do that vid :) If i get better eventually.

  • Are you sure your plls suck? because i can do most of them in less than 3 seconds. if they suck and you make me learn a new set.....

  • hahah! I said some suck :D

Most of them I am confident are the best PLL out there. But for some I dont think so. The ones I am iffy about are

    one of the Js, E, F, V & N's

  • i like your J's. they're my fastest plls.

  • I admit it!!!! I LEARNED THE BEGINNER METHOD FROM POGOBAT!!!!! I've transitioned to the fridrich method now. Did you know that pogobat also has a video called "How to solve the rubix cube faster"? I watched that hoping it would help me become a speedcuber, but I never truly improved until I found this channel.

  • well pogobat is not a speedcuber. did he even compete a single time? I would have guessed his average to be about 1 minute... he's not in a position to teach anyone anything advanced imo

  • I totally agree. He's not in position to teach anyone anything advanced. I also admit you teach good advanced things (even though I'm most self-taught I've learned a thing or two by watchign your videos).

But what I said was that his tutorials are good for beginners.

  • I personally learned Beginner's Method by Pogobat. I don't think they're hard to understand (I was 13 when I learned from his videos, now I'm 14).

I think he explained really good, and I have personally taught 2 of my classmates how to solve the Rubik's Cube using that Method. I do admit he does have some bad stuff in his videos (which I realized when I became more skilled) but he does explain pretty well to beginners.

Now I haven't watched your Tutorial, so I can't compare those.

  • naturally, it cant be TOOO terrible... seeing as people do learn from it, and it was pretty popular even before it was featured. Its just that I freak out when I look at it with my super critical eye :D Its passable. I agree. But could be much better

  • And about PLLS: I've had to relearn PLLs twice, first I found some site that just had PLLs, they really sucked. Then I found Yu Nakajima's and I learned them for a really long time, I learned like 18 of the 21. Then I found Erik Akkersdijk's PLLs, and my personally opinion is that his PLLs are the best.

I made a Microsoft Word-file of both Erik Akkersdijk and Yu Nakajima's algorithms (F2L and OLL too :P), and I'm currently learning Erik's.

Go to his site, or to his Youtube Channel (frk17).

  • And yeah... Erik Akkersdijk is World Champion in Rubik's Cube... I suppose you knew that...

Yu Nakajima was World Champion too, however now he is #4.

  • what does the name "badmephisto"mean to you?

  • but u can go on youtube with the lil lcd on it :P

  • damm the g19 is expensive as hell >.>

  • nice gaming keyboard

  • thanks. Its the G15, it glows in the direct, i <3 it

  • i have those same juggling balls. =D also, dice stacking looks cool.

  • I knew it! I was thinking man somone should make a sudoku cube

  • from the still pic of hte video showing the camera angle, i already knew it was a badmephisto video haha
