I have a doubt, I'm going to record and album, and I can choose the Catalina Ash and a Gretsch Catalina Club Mini Mod, which have the better quality sound? I play funk, soul and latin Rhythms
im looking to buy a new kit and im seriously considering buying gretsch but i play a lot of metal stuff and i dont know of any metal drummers that use gretsch so im hesitant towoards buying them for my playing style what do you suggest???
Everything they told you here is true!! I have one of these babies and its built like a tank and sounds awesome. Biggest bang for your buck! This is my 10th drumkit and it will be my last!!! Pearl, Ludwig, Tama, i had them all and the only one who had a great sound like this was my 1971(i think) Rogers. Doesn't have a lot of projection (that's what mics are for) but the rich tone of these drums is amazing. Jazz, pop, metal you can play whatever you want!
I'm trying to decide what set to go with. Gretsch Catalina Ash, or Ludwig Element Lacquer 4-Piece Emo Shell Pack. Our music style is like Fall Out Boy or 30 Seconds To Mars. What would sound the best?
quick question. Would Aquarian Superkick 2 drum head go nicely this on the bass drum? Because i'm trying to find a good bass drum head. Sorry i didn't really know who else to ask but it would be great to know. thanks
Q: What do you think about the Gretsch Catalina Roack Bonham configuration (26in. bass with rack tom and 16 and 18 floor toms and 6.5 x14 snare. How is the sound compared to the Ash and the Maple kits you reviewed?
I had a couple of questions about this, if you had the time. I know this kit usually goes for around 650 American, or as low as just 600. Do you know how much it would cost with an additional bass drum? Also, do you know if the bass drums can come in a virgin config?
He I also wanted to know if Catalina Ash is verstile for metal and stuff like Avenged Sevenfold and Tool stuff. In terms of metal rolls and making the toms kinda bleed together well.
@Mjbabycakes7072 drums are like women,,it is what sounds and feels good to you, what you hear after you have finished tuning your kit,may sound good to you, there for what ever cymbal set you put with it all really depends on what sounds good to you after you have tried a few out,I use Sabian, but also like the clean crispy sound of Zildjian
I'm wondering about the kit I should buy. I started drums 10 years ago but now I want to change my kit for a Catalina. I don't know if I should take the Maple or the Ash...
I prefer the Ash but some people told me Maple was better for rock.
i was torn between the maple and ash as well. i could afford them both so it came down to pure look and sound. i like the ash's red color better than the maple. the ash has just a better sound than the maple. too much attack with the maple in my opinion. i suggest anyone on a budget try this kit in ash. i doubt you find a bettter deal.
i have this kit. i've had it for two years. it's the deep red color. i used to work at guitar center and for the price and quality i think it's the best kit you can get. i've never had anything but complements on the look and sound of it. i tried almost every head and i find that either the remo ambassadors, which provide more brightness and sustain, or the coated emperors, which i use for the sound i like. this is the best kit by way of quality and quantity that you can get for the price.
I've got the ash fusion kit, and it's GREAT. Even with stock heads, these things sounded superb. After I slapped on new heads, they blew any kit I'd heard in a LONG time out of the water. I love them.
i'm lookin for a new kit. and i'm stuck between this one and a pdp m5. any suggestions? i play rock, and rock country jason aldean carrie underwood what not. and alternative rock, and heavy rock
i'd say you can't go wrong with either one, i personally own a gretsch catalina and am a big fan of gretsch drums so that would be my suggestion for you.
not a great kit for metal because the drums are on the small side and ash just doesn't have the volume for it. but for anything esle this kit is outstanding. bass drum has a great sound and the drums have really nice tone. snare is ok. i think it's the best kit for the price. i've tried the maple and birch catalina kits too, but the ash is without a doubt the best one.
@monocubas hehe. nice. this kit is great for jazz or big band. I would suggest the maple one if you want hard rock or metal. for more country/ pop i suggest the birch.
Hi, quick question, I play sort of heavy rock for my band, "Like System of a Down style", and I was wondering if these drums would go good with my band
If you really want the drums to sing I would use clear 1 ply heads top and bottom. If you are looking to dry up the overtones use a 1 ply coated on top instead. Remo or Aquarian brand seem to be the best.
The ash sounds really great for any kind of music... The factory heads aren't all that great, but if they are tuned right they sound wonderful... My heads were getting somewhat old on mine so I upgraded to the Evans EC2's and they sound even better...
All together the Shells are wonderful, which is about the only thing you serious drummers need to know, and the factory gretsch heads are mediocre but the shells make up for them!
I looked a lot on the gretsch catalina ash and maple and i dont know what to pick. i look for more metal and heavy metal, rock styles but i want it to fit to other things as well. which one will be better for heavy metal?
If i HAD to pick between ash or maple for metal, I would go with the ash. It cuts a little more on the high end, which I believe would work better for a metal application. It won't limit you to that style of music though. You could play anything! Let me know if you would like to order from us.
I can't decide between the maple or the ash. I play hardcore and deathcore music. I currently have a PDP 805. I just don't know if I would really want the 8 inch.

im gettin a new drum kit and its a shell pack. now does that come with heads on it. and also i know thats there is no cymbals and hardware but the toms are mounted on a special built stand (not in the bass drum) does that come with it?
Well, Ash has the tendency to be slightly more bright than maple. Maple is an extremely well rounded wood for drums. Very warm and consistent. Maple may be your winner. We have both available... let me know which way you're leaning. Feel free to call me direct with any questions..
We actually have the Maple kit (tobacco fade) that we used in the video for sale for $719 with a free Grestch drum rug. The kit was only played for about a half hour, and the heads only have light wear... Let me know if interested..
