its actually easier if you get the sphere first, get the yellow pikmin, and then multi task by havn yellow pikmin break down the gate for the blue pikmin and also by throwing the yellow pikmin on top of the poison gate to destroy it while the white ones are working on the bottom.

Because he didn't have any Blue Pikmin yet, and there are 5 Blue Pikmin found somewhere. If the game was programmed to have 100 Pikmin even if there are pikmin found, it would screw the game up.

the ship makes a potion out of them that Olimar can spray on his Pikmin to make them stronger (stronger for defeating enemies), faster, etc.

I'm not sure if this is a spoiler, but there are different kinds of berries whose potions' do different things to the Pikmin.

actually, there is only one other berry besides the red one. It's a purple one that affects enemies instead of Pikmin, not gonna tell you anymore because of spoilers =D
