The Churchs may not like 1st Drummer Nick Ward. But in my opinion, he is way superior than Jay Dee Daughtey and Tim Powles. Check Out that original clip of Unguarded Moment in their Glam Moment. Watch Nick Ward's drumming miming, to actually see his skills in action. He may be pub rock, but makes it up with Feel and Attitude. Also, his Drumming on their First Album Skins Of Heart proves the fact.
Richard Ploog was the Best Drummer for The Church. He provided that Explosive Freeform Inprovisation and Sensitivity needed. Live, he was fantastic, especially when he provided those qualities during Constant In Opal. Any one who says otherwise does not understand passion and freedom during live performance. Jay Dee Daughtey and Tim Powles are Robots. Not the right Drummers For The Other 3 Members of the group.
I was lucky enough to see the ORIGINAL band twice and I saw them after your dad left and I thought the 3rd show was lame. I tried to like the later stuff after Gold Afternoon Fix but the lyrics were goofy/pretentious. so take that for whats it worth
The Church don't have a big following here. They had a decent following in the early to mid eighties, but nowadays we're more of a cult following and lately The Church have only made it to Malmö or Gothenburg while touring. I missed the acoustic gig in Gothenburg a few years back, but made it to the concerts in Malmö and Copenhagen in 2007. I hope they will make it to Europe again this year...
As a 57-year-old fan from the States, my endless gratitude to the Brits and Aussies and Kiwis. Where would modern rock and roll be without your great good taste?
mesmersized I am ... Incredible raw power and think of how they managed to make themselves into Priest=Aura instead of getting sucked into making music for other people
Richard Ploog was a mediocre drummer at best, I saw many live shows where he would destroy the timing during any given song. Tim Powles is the perfect compliment to this amazing band.
No, ... just a fact. Richard Ploog and his excessive drug use didn't help so he got sacked. Make your argument AGAINST Tim Powles being the best possible fit for this band. They have been making their finest music this last decade.
that is bullshit! My dads sacking had nothing to do with him on drugs, He didnt even take much Drugs and I find that is hypocritical how Kilbey soon after became a junky, The Church's 90's material is shit I could wipe my ass with it.
when my dad was playing with the Church they received 5 gold records, when he left they never got one again, and how come the records he is on are STILL the highest selling? well because they are the best! Heyday and Starfish were just masterpieces!
@GEETARS3 : Well, he was absent during the recording of Gold Afternoon Fix. And Priest=Aura has the best drumming in Church history, as far as I am concerned.
Like I said, Ploog was often totally lost in a live situation. He couldn't keep the tempo, but rushed.
He wasn't on their debut, and anyway a drummer doesn't make a band. Wonder why they never released a live album in their heyday? ;-)
As a live band, they've been better in the last 10 to 15 years than ever.
well alot of what you said is Opinion, but he is my Dad ofcourse I feel biased, Oh and he is on half of gold afternoon fix, the rest is sadly a drum machine, aslo Jay Dee was 10 years older than my dad so ofcourse he would of had more experience and I dont know how old Tim Powles is but Im sure he is older than my dad.
@GEETARS3 Hey, I think your Dad did some awesome drumming with them! I do like their later stuff, but it's different. I'd say he's got good improvising skills, timings difficult live because it's hard for the band hear sometimes. I think it's natural to quicken it live, go with the flow. You play guitar? Jam on!
@GEETARS3 Its great to know your dad had a son! Ive loved the albums your dad played on for so long. I am almost 39 and just wanted to say how great it is that your dad was the drummer for such a great band. greetings from a small town in texas!
I guess "tv swinden" shold say "TV Sweden" The accent of the announcer is swedish for sure. And you hear a few swedish words. Not at all surprisingly as Church recorded quite a few songs in Stockholm.
This must be very early even before skins and hearts?
Actually AFTER Blurred Crusade. They did not to Europe until then and they performed two songs on this show, Almost With You being the other one(look for it, it's on here. Not to mention if it had been before OSAH was released it would still Nick Ward drumming and that is most definitely Richard Ploog.
Fantastic clip, they were such a stunningly brilliant band at that time. What an incredible performance if it wasn't for the ad-libs they could be playing the record. I saw them in Sheffield UK around this time, a half empty room but never to be forgotten one of the best gigs ever!

@martenlandstrom Hi Marten. I have a question. How well known are the Church in Sweden in 2010 if at all? Cheers from California :-)

GREAT SONG GREAT PERFORMANCE must be early eighties.
I saw them live in malmoe 2007.
Not much people at the show - i think they are still a very good band.

A nice show, that one, even if the show in Copenhagen the day after was probably better.

Tim Powles is a also an excellent producer and an extremely nice guy!
