  • Totally awesome song! :-D

  • I have loved this song since the Astronauts and Heretics album, almost 20 years ago.

  • I'm in love with this song.

  • wasn't this at Boston?? from his dvd 'Sole Inhabitant' ?

  • @tripero011 Ahhh a sharp ear! Now feast on the Visuals here is a "paste" from Thomas' site pertaining to this DVD. "The live DVD performance from Martyrs in Chicago, Spring 2006. This is the video footage of the audio found on The Sole Inhabitant live CD."

  • This sounds like one of the crappier presets that came with my digital synthesizer...

  • Even though Thomas Dolby is a genius, I wasn't expecting such a melodious track from him. This is a masterpiece!

  • amazing!

  • beautiful music

  • nice song, not heard of him for a while, liked it

  • Great live performance - the Astronauts & Heretics album is packed with great songs :)

  • How awesome is this song.... And watching it live had to be amazing... Sole Inhabitant is pure treasure!

  • PLEASE SOMEBODY POST "i LOVE YOU GOOD BYE".

  • So, a thought experiment that shows that opinion exists, and a real life example of a situation in which it functions, and an answer to my question, namely that it is the function of opinion that fascinates you. Serves me right for expecting an objective answer to a question that can only be answered with opinion

  • @VvAnarchangelvV Oh don't be downhearted. It's only Youtube. Eat, drink and be merry... or..if you are a bloke that goes around in womens clothing... eat, drink and be Mary!

  • Damn. Saw him a few years ago at the Rex in Pittsburgh, but he didn't do this one -- which is one of my favorites. Thanks for posting.

  • I want a copy of this live show... Anywhere I can find this?

  • @mskristipdx CDBaby.com Search for Thomas Dolby and buy "The Sole Inhabitant" DVD or CD. I ended up with the Autographed DVD and It's worth every penny.

  • Oooo Nooooo, it's the Borg Band...

  • lol

  • seen the great man in a nightclub down bristol in 1983 fantastic even though he was sufferlng from a sore throat . what a professional. how many other artists would have gone on to the stage and still gave it 100% !

  • Tommy, you get near Minneapolis and I can guarantee at least 4 tickets. Yeah, we've warped the kids, and they love you too!

  • ...it´s natural, simply, ...great performing and performer..... :o)

  • Front row center at the Boston show...got to shake his hand at the end of the show...awesome :o)

  • Astronauts and Heretics was his best fricking album. But I liked Gate to the Mind's Eye too. It's like I'm a defender of the least liked of his stuff among fans. Last time I checked, everyone on the Thomas Dolby message boards thought Astronauts and Gate were like his two worst albums. Clearly they need to listen again. XD

  • @BlueSilverStars I commend you on your comments. However, one of your comments, "Clearly, they need to listen again" is a little silly in my view. Mr Dolbys' fans (of which I am one) will have listened to these albums a number times before making up their minds. It's simply a matter of opinion.

That said, go on appreciating the master. Happy listening!

  • @brereton1113 I think it's a matter of how personally important those two albums were to me, so I feel almost insulted when people don't like them. Simply because they were so important to and such a part of me. It's weird.

  • @BlueSilverStars Well you really ought not to feel insulted my friend. It's only opinion and opnion is what makes life interesting. Hypothetically, if Mr. Dolby himself came out and said, "actually, I was never happy with Heretics myself and after all this time, I can't stand the darn thing".... how would you feel then?

  • @brereton1113 Compare "opinion is what makes life interesting" to the flagwaving "diversity is what makes America great" or "free speech is what makes America great" They all follow a similarly assertive line of reasoning, and are based more on faith than fact. Not that faith cannot be expressed in more factual ways; that's what philosophy is for

But what is it exactly about opinion that you find interesting?

  • @VvAnarchangelvV It's a scientific view. If you think of sight, sound etc as data, all our brains receive the same data when listening to a piece of music. Now, if you put that data in to a computer and ask it to deliver an answer to a question you ask about the music, it will always deliver the same results. But, if you do the same with a human, you will get widely varying answers. Our brain is a natural computer and the way it functions when delivering an opinion is what fascinates me.

  • @brereton1113 I'm used to it. I would be disappointed because I think it's really good, but I'm used to it. One of my favorite David Bowie songs is "Never Let Me Down" and Bowie has said that he doesn't like that song at all.

  • @BlueSilverStars Check out toadlickers.... Mr. D.'s latest... quirky and fun!

  • @BlueSilverStars

as i was reading this i thought...that sounds like something melody would say...and then.....:D

  • he created 3D-Music

  • nice tune, but this is not live.

  • @metalhos

It is "live", but he's just using sequencers and looped synth tunes to supplement. He's a ONE-MAN show, so obviously he has to use some recording to do this live, but rest assured that Dolby did all of this himself. He's an awesome composer!

  • musical genius, can't call it,but it'd be a great show to trip to.wonder if he eats shrooms or anything?

  • Changed how i danced and drove my car..

  • He is now Emo? Damn, I remember when he was Edge Techno.

  • The beat is awesome

  • what about the complete "other" version of Suitcase that used to be on his myspace page? THAT'S the one that totally kicks ass, & for my money one of the 5 best rock songs ever done, & only about 2 minutes long! primal soul-screaming vocals & power-guitar chords echoing out of a cave from some huge monster amp - for 3 yrs i started & ended nearly every day with that song - where IS IT? where did it come from & where did it go? i want it BACK!

  • Jean Michel... what ?

    Vangelis... what ?

Thomas Morgan Robertson IS the one !

  • Dolby is back!!! AMERIKANA the best music in years!!!!

  • Very cool............I would love to see one of his shows!

  • Dolby, book your next concert at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, UT. Guaranteed sell-out! Dolby is a genius even in 2010.

  • I love his styling here, this is just HIS hairstyle, gorgeous!

  • Saw this at the Tupelo in 2006...so stoked as this is one of my top 5 fav TMDR songs. I relate to this song as in '92 I flew to a country I've never been before and married someone whom I never met face to face...and here we are 18 years later. Yes, it was awesome live!

  • Thomas dolby is brillient. One of my fav songs. I'm kicking myself for not knowing about this tour.

  • I agree with 01goldg1 comments. Thomas Dolby has many excellent songs to his credit that tell stories, like 'One of Our Submarines Is Missing' which is about his uncle. I love this song and 'I Scare Myself' is also one of my many favourites. Will have to get around to seeing him live.

  • Dolby=Genius!

  • he had to learn the hard way

  • @n8tureboy Genius doesn't seem like a strong enough word. The man is a wizard. And a genius. My God, this song is amazing, like so many others of his.

  • @Shrykespeare

Agreed! The man is a wunderkind of musical composition and electronic sounds. I'd love to see him play live.

  • Thomas is making new music these days. He was running his company BEATNIK, Inc, providing audio solutions for mobile devices. Amazing.

  • This show was cool. He would gradually 'build' his songs, and they slowly became recognizable as he progressed. Most of them I knew almost immediately, but he played some tricks on the audience, also. I hope he tours again. One of the best shows I have seen in awhile.

  • Saw the same tour at Mercy Lounge in Nashville. I loved every second of the show. TD is awesome.

  • that happen to me at the times i had that song, i feel like, in a suit case, isolated, i woke up and things were very strange, lucky i have known people that pulled me from that quick-sand, the main one my LOVELY AND BEAUTIFUL MOTHER LULU

  • Hear it once ,,Your hooked

  • great, just great thomas dolby master piece!

  • I like the bass on the album version better--this version's bass is a bit intrusive, I think.

  • I love his voice too

  • This is an absolutely stunning song.

    End of :)

  • This is so fucking cool.

  • I just found Thomas Dolby on Twitter. He has recently re-released The Flat Earth and another cd with several rare or never heard tracks that was not on the original pressings.

  • Thomas is a musical genius. People who only know of "She Blinded Me with Science" are truly missing out on the depth of this man's abilities. Where is TD these days (2009)?

  • He just this summer released remastered and expanded versions of Golden Age of Wireless and Flat Earth. Also, he's working on an entirely new album, which I think will be awesome.

  • TO all my team mates of the Akron East 1980 Football team . This song has all the feel of that November night . The famous 20-20 game which started the great Northeast Ohio national run of Offensive football . The rams in the State Game of 1983, East beating #2 team in the nation in 1984 and Griffin State titles

  • Hooray to Thomas Dolby for keepin on truckin.

The 1980's FM (DX-7 etc) synthbass is a smart stylish touch, trademarking the piece as a TD song, while bridging two decades of musical development.

  • HOLY KRAFTWERK.........Love it. But totaly and completely Kraftwerk inspired.

    Great Synths

  • Voodoo people!

  • My copy comes in the mail tomorrow. Can't wait...

  • You are going to love it! My Brother and I were at this show live in Chicago while it was being recorded. What a night. ENJOY!

  • Oh...my...GOD this is awesome. I am so jealous that you saw it live!

  • This song is just so good. It's just a plain great composition to begin with... and then his playing and creativity is amazing. It's just not right... and it makes me weirdly emotional.

  • Has anyone posted, I Love You..goodbye??

  • How he never lost it is beyond me. Pure genius is typically a recipe for disaster.

  • I'm glad I found this here. I love his voice, and this song is my favourite Thomas Dolby song. Lyrics and sound match perfectly. It's just wow.

  • This whole disc is great. Got 40's swing etc on it, hip-hoppy stuff. Floaty like this..great road music.

  • Great song by dolby.

  • I AGREE WITH YOU wESTCHASER, some could say the same about DEVO and the Whip it song... they made so many better songs... but the masses aren't looking for creative genius, they want a catchy drum beat and a song they don't even understand!! respect

  • Pure genius.

  • This is one of my all-time favorite songs from Thomas Dolby. What's really sad is that much of the world is only familiar with Thomas' "Science" tune when his talents run so much deeper that that pop tune.

  • I wore out my "Golden Age of Wireless" album to the grooves (in the vinyl). Thank god for youtube.

  • Wow. Just wow. This guy's not a musician, he's a magician. What he can do with sound it nothing short of wizardry. One of the most underrated and brilliant composers EVER.

  • I've been rediscovering TD in a big way the last few months. What an amazingly brilliant guy. Can't wait to hear what he comes out with next now that he's working on a new album at last.

  • He don't need no stinkin band.

  • Sadly so few people really know this Man's music. Most people think it all stops at "She Blinded Me...", even though that was only a "Cloudburst"! There is soo much poignant emotion interlaced in all his wonderful music. A true Musical Pioneer on the level of Eno, Fripp and Gabriel...IMO.

  • a "Cloudburst"? at "Shingle Street"?

    yt proposes weird letter sequences.

    for example it proposed "takinser"

    take what?

    insert what?

if you're looking at me i'm faaaar awaaay!

  • a "Cloudburst"? at "Shingle street"?

if you're searching me i'm still faar awaaay!

  • I LOVE YOU DOLBY!!! ggrr i love this guy!

    AUSTIN TEXAS MISSES YOU!

  • this is a grand vision for man. this song grew on me. thank all for i-tunes for helping us find these greats.
