  • Can anyone help me? I can't read the text at 0:38 and I really want to know it. I can't see that kanji at all.

Kono mizu wo DAICON made... ?nde kudasai...

  • 凄いね。キラキラで宇多丸君がいっていたのは、コレだな。

  • she destroyed the enterprise 3:52

  • 1981. The year that the founders of the studio that would bring us such batfuck insane titles as Neon Genesis Evangelion, Gurren Lagann, FLCL, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt made their mark.

Oh, and boob physics. You can't forget boob physics.

  • She must me Mr Roger's granddaughter or something

  • It's like I'm really in Japan.

  • She blew up the Enterprise... in space....

  • Yeah, stuff like that happens everyday in Japan... Why do you think the Self Defense force is so well equipped?

  • Only Gainax can think of a Badass spaceship..BASED ON A FREAKIN RADISH !!

  • look like a very heavy looking spartan solider. 1:29

  • @ration10 It's a Mobile Infantry Trooper from the Starship Troopers novel.

  • The music from the 3-to-4-minute mark I know as general production music; I first heard it as incidental music during the television show "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous (with Robin Leach)" looooong ago. Only now I'm sorry I don't know the title; it sounds so compelling here! There's an entire world of that stuff done for television - I find the material from the late 60's to early '80s most compelling.

  • a giant space turnip ?

  • 3:01 I've heard this song many times but never knew where it was from. Does anyone know?

  • Brings back great memories

  • Yeah! Jazz-funk fusion soundtrack FTW!

  • 01:48

    Stunning appearance!

You can see this guy in Abenobashi anime (obviously by Gainax) episode 2 or 3 i dont remember XD

  • Superb !! basic art but the magic is there.

  • I want that backpack.

Also, I muted this and had Alice in Chains - A Looking In View playing in the background. Pure win.

  • 2:58 IDE was invoked

  • ok lets this is fome 1981 and the starship troopers ova came out in 88 so ya.......

its rily good and i like it not get me rong

  • O_o TO FART WITH THIS .. A SUPER PAIR NABO And that brought the CHELA SACRED OR

  • .....and thus was the beginning of Gainax.

  • All music is amazing where is from!? =D

  • AWESOME!!

    *APPLAUSE*

I DECIDED TO ACT LIKE SATURDAY MORNINGS WERE BACK AND l WAS LAUGHING WITH CEREAL IN MY MOUTH AND I ALMOST CHOKED TO DEATH BUT IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT.

  • That is one of the funniest comments I've ever read

  • This is so awesome!!!

  • Wow, this is so cool...

In 1981 this was an epic win! And now is a classic of japanese animation :)

  • Symbol from 3:00 is from ideon...

  • Holy shit that was the funniest, best shit I ever saw. Thank you so much for posting this. lol

  • Defated the mech! :D

    *Godzilla*

    O_O

Talk about out of the frying pan...

  • BGM from 1:24 to 1:45 is the same with the BGM of DRAGON QUEST 7!!

  • Seems a safe bet to say that this influenced the design of that girl from Wild Arms 5

  • Amendment to my previous comment: What is the source of the song from 1:20

  • It sounds almost the same with DRAGON QUEST 7's BGM! (to 1:45)

  • Who composed the music for this video? What is it from? It is an original composition?

  • its teh ALLMIGHTY RADISH!!!

  • her sake not even drop

  • no kabe duda ke Gainaxx tenia buen talento desde el inicio..... me gusto mucho este korto, y la musika es genial

  • wait a sec... sci fi convention, not anime... my bad.

  • hahaha.. star destroyer. TIE fighters. ENTERPRISE!? I was even surprised to see godzilla and ghidora, even more so when she blew all of them up.

  • gainax should really keep making these openings.

  • I like how the Gundam turns into Ideon.

  • man the music's awesome! And gainax showed great skills with these conventions openings!

  • what is the huge aircraft on 3:48??

  • 『NAUSIKA』by HayaoMiyazaki

  • Daicon III and IV predated Nausicaa by several years; however, the design for the girl in these anime were indeed influenced by Miyazaki--particularly Princess Clarisse from Castle of Cagliostro, the Lupin the 3rd film he directed--with more emphasis on the face and hair than the body...

  • What is that lobsterlike biped at 3:09?

  • "Alien Baltan (バルタン星人, Barutan Seijin)"

  • An Ultraman monster! Thanks, I didn't recognize it because I haven't seen much Ultraman.

  • In case anyone didn't know, Daicon means radish in Japanese. Excellent anime!

  • the music is awesome how i can download?? has a name =3????

  • Wow, considering the age of this it's quite awesome - that must have been mind-blowing back then in 81' O_O; So ahead of time...

  • actually, the animation was crappy even then. It was made by otaku college students. But the animation itself was quite ambitious. Btw, it was made by hideaki anno who did Neon Genesis Evangelion and other future Gainax staff.

  • The music in this is fantastic.

  • Agreed.

  • oh shit she pwned master chief

  • yo do you guys know where the music is from for around for when all the different characters come to screen?(around 3:00)

  • I think I do. I think it's from a James Bond action sequence from one of his movies. Maybe..the ski chase scene from "For your eyes only."

  • Isn't that robot that is chasing her the powered armor from the starship troopers OVA?

  • yes it is. actually starship troopers is a novel

back in 1959. And the protaganist is a Filipino named Juan Rico and not an Argentine.

  • @ballisticnovacannon Yep. Kazutaka Miyatake of Studio Nue designed the Starship Troopers power armor seen here for the Japanese edition of the novel in the early 80s. Later he planned to use a similar design for Macross (1982), which he refined into the Zentradi power armors. In 1988 he again used the design for the anime Uchuu No Senshi...

  • Godzilla, Ultraman villain and the transforming RX-78 Gundam were hilarious!! She totally pwned the Yamato, Enterprise, star destroyer and who knows what else!! The ending where she pours the liquid on the plant that turns into a ship is a pun. The convention was called Daicon and the plant is a daikon (Japanese radish).

  • And God said, let there be Gainax. And it was good, for a time...

  • Then it became epic in 2006, when all reason was kicked to the curb.

  • It really feels like it's christmas and I'm five years old again.

This is the most beautiful thing I have seen in months.

  • I've wanted to remaster the Daicon films' audio for ages. To do this, the first thing I need to know is where all the audio cues came from. Example: at 0:58, there's a cue that SOUNDS like it came from a Lupin TV series. And at 1:04 there's a cue straight from Cagliostro. NO clue on the rest, nor the ones from Daicon IV (aside from Twilight). Please, if anyone wants to help, info would be appreciated!

  • Once the first mech gets blown up, that song is from 'For Your Eyes Only' (James Bond). It is track 15 Ski...Shoot...Ski off the MGM st release. Not sure of the rest of the music from Diacon III.

Daicon IV has music from the ELO album TIME, songs 1-Prologue and above mentioned 2-Twilight.

The slide show/making of video for Diacon IV has the song Hold On Tight from the above ELO album.

  • Correction, the track from Diacon III is song 8-Runaway off of the FYEO ST.

  • Excellent! That covers a good chunk of Daicon III now. Surprising to learn that they used music from some movie. I'll still forever associate the track with Daicon. Too bad even the latest remaster of Prologue/Twilight sounds starved for highs and bass.

  • she blue up the USS Enterprise T.T

  • yay, the ancestor of A-ko.

    I must see

  • lol this is great considering it was just done by fans

  • Amazing to think this was produce by amateurs at a time before computer animation became popular. Does the girl in the clip actually have a name? Is she the ame one who turns up in the later Daicon openings?

  • yep she is the bunny girl from the Daicon 4 opening. not sure if she was ever named. Hard to beleive the was Gainax's first work.

  • She's the same girl, yeah, but she doesn't have a name.

  • @scarletshade I can't remember the name of her but she was based on Claris from the amazing Miyazaki-film, Castle of Cagliostro. A lot of Si Fi OTAKU at that time was Anime OTAKU as well. I surely was. That's why GUNDAM and other amazing SiFi animations could evolve in Japan so early.

  • This is pritty cool, BUT DAICON 4 IS WAY BETTER XD Animation, Music ++~

  • Y'know, "Daicon IV" is better in most ways, but this one actually had a story.

And I'm probably the only teenager who gets the joke at 3:19-ish.

  • What, the fact that the RX-78-2 Gundam turns into Ideon, and Ideon looks like a GM?

  • There is many of Azuma Hideo charactor.

  • That bitch is deadly! Even took out the USS Enterprise!

  • she blew up the Yamato!

  • That was so freaking random.

    I loved it!

  • pretty good considering how/when it was done, but man DaiconIV is just SO MUCH BETTER!!!

  • lol, she blew up the Enterprise.

  • Not to many times do you see the Yamato, the Enterprise and the Atragon get destroyed at the same time

  • the birth of a legend

  • 80ies animation will always be the best!!

  • GOD! THANK YOU! These young punks today need a lesson in classic animation.

  • Hah, I just read the Notenki Memoirs so it's easier to understand the greatness of this now that I have some background story of it. :)

  • You just wish Gainax was still that way again. Nowadays they're on fumes.

  • Heh, true. But I think the market needs a new visionary, someone taking things a bit further in a good way. I wonder how the new Evangelion movies will be... Which they, of course, say will revolt the world of anime as it is today. It better, since they GIVE people big expectations they have to live up to them.

  • I love this vid.

  • I'm still amused by the fact that the lizard and the first appearance of the robot have Lupin III music behind them.

  • It's very noticable where they got their BGM tracks from.

  • While most would see Daicon IV, and enjoy it for what it was, I hate to admit I find this a lot more impressive for what these guys were able to do, and with what limited experience/equipment they had to go by (a lesson "Otaku no Video" doved into). The "cels" weren't real acetate fro mwhat I've found out for example.

  • Genius... pure... unadulterated... brilliance...

  • Happy ending?

  • good video, but not great as the one from Daicon IV

  • esta tan ley
