They are both just utterly fabulous in Carmen. I saw this production live at the Met, and I saw Garanca at the Met again with Brandon Jovanovich, who pleasantly surprised me. Even with the grainy video quality, at the risk of sounding corny, it's a real tear-jerker.
I have the DVD and must say it is THE most passionate Carmen I haveever heard in my life. And in 61 years I have heard quite a few. Strongly recommend the DVD.
Besides a brilliant singer she is a superb actress ,my God ,I am thrilled,... she is the Carmen of this era of singers... and for many years to come.. Alagna good also dramatic yes good also...
This is too much hotness and great singing for me to handle. I love their interpretations. She is the best Carmen ever. Too bad hey die. They should have had a 3 way with Michaela.

This is not the final duet of Carmen that I would like. The orcestra is slow, there is some disonance, both Garanca and Alagna from time to time do not sound correctly. Only for example listen the London "Carmen" with Kaufmann, or Carreras with Agnes Baltsa.
My husband is not an an opera addict like me , but he woke up for this .(live from the Met)...to see if she came out of the dress...joking aside , the most powerful finale I 've seen.

The dress reminds me of certain Jane Avril lithograph. This Carmen produces such a beautiful beautifull timbre and she is gorgeous too! Alagna is declining... although I appreciate the excellent French.
Oh, how I love the final scene! What a great cast (Elina and Roberto at their best!), what a great production! I'm so keen on the DVD to be released! :)
I like the directorial idea that the knife comes out earlier in the scene and he threatens Carmen with it quite longer than in usual productions... It makes Carmen's defiance all the more heroic and formidable...
It even makes more sense in building up to the murder moment....
Wow, what a finale! She died beautifully! Elina is getting better Carmen and Roberto even exceeded my expectations. I compare this with La Scala production and I like this one much better. It is amazing to see how different artists interpret same role though. Alagna's Don Jose seems to be more naive and trusting and kills in despair, whereas Kaufmann's tragical Don Jose rebels against his love and hates himself and Carmen for loving her.
Elina Garanca, que linda eres, no hay otra Carmen como tú.

But who could possibly think about rings in such a moment?
Carmen is supposed to throw the ring in rage and not to give it to Don Jose.
Garanca is kind of non present, distant, cold, a singing machine.
This is not Carmen.
