David Gelernter needs to take his finger out of his mouth. He looks like a character in an Austin Powers movie, like mini-me. Kaczynsk was a genius. If anyone at Havard had paid attention to his psych tests, they could've treated his schizophrenia and he might not have killed anyone. I feel his annoyance at jets flying over his cabin. Dude moved to the wilderness for peace and quiet and loggers and airlines encroached on his personal space.

MfG.
Robert Taylor (the English-speaking man in the blue shirt) is a perfect example of an intelligent but ignorant individual. He says that more technology and scientific advancement will eventually find a cure for cancer. He insists upon this even after it is pointed out that most modern cases of cancer result from our toxic industrial technological system. So if we just walk a little farther along the primrose path, industrial society will solve its own problems. Yeah, right, buddy, sure . . .
I agree with luv2bud . Robert Taylor is a jerk. Cancer can be cured. stop eating processed foods and eat raw uncooked fruits and vegetables and you can cure any disease. the government knows this but hides it from the public.
Cancer, hypertension, diabetes and a host of other modern diseases that plague madern societies could all be prevented or cured with a healthier, more natural lifestyle. But it goes way beyond that. America, the most technologically advanced country in the world is plagued by drug addiction, senseless violence, teenage suicide, and numerous other social problems that were unthinkable in hunter/gatherer societies. Groundwater is being contaminated by antidepressants excreted in people's urine.
Another historical figure who was both idolized and stigmatized was John Brown. He led a violent revolt opposing slavery prior to the Civil War. In a way, both Kaczynski and Brown are alike. The only thing seperating them as heroes or villans is one's point of view.
No matter what one thinks about Kaczynski, considering him a relentless killer or a genius, he and his story remain unique and fascinating.
This cold determination to say, 'Well, I have written important theories, but no one's going to read them. So I do whatever is necessary to make people know it and read it.'
But, in the end, people did read it, but as far as I know, the influence of his writings, although he still has a number of 'fans', was all in all not really worth talking about.
I agree with you completely. I am fascinated by people who fall into the 'mad scientist' profile. Whether it's Alfred Nobel (as in Nobel Prize) who invented dynamite for the purpose of ending all wars or Joseph Guillotine who opposed the death penalty, but is famous for advocating a device which was used to kill (however humanely it may be).
it's a shame that kaczynski resorted to terrorism and violence against innocents. even if his arguments are sound, the fundamental injustice of murdering innocent people is enough to alienate people who might otherwise have been sympathetic to his point of view. granted, without doing so he wouldn't have been able to make his theories so publicly available, but surely to treat the lives of others as means to an end can't be valid if he's defending the integrity of autonomous human existence?
i don't know.. i mean this in the spirit of open minded debate but i think you yourself are assuming a lot in saying that. it's interesting as an idea to question whether people going about their individual projects in academia or research should be held morally accountable for the 'bigger picture' of where that project might be leading humanity, fine. i'm still not convinced that an even remotely adequate answer has been provided to the extent of warranting murder.
and i realise that the terminology of my comments is loaded with assumptions, like the meanings of the words 'terrorism' or 'murder'. as much or as little as i might be approaching the issue from the perspective of a 'superfluous' [in your assumption] morality, my initial points were largely pragmatic. simply put, i don't think he chose an effective way of spreading his ideas. the majority see the world from this 'superfluous' morality, and you need their support for an effective revolution
