This is how it is. Steve vai did all the guitar work for the duel except for the slide guitar stuff. That was Ry Cooder. I know this because it says so in the booklet of Steve Vai's album Elusive Lights and Sounds. Look it up.

Not really. In the old interviews with both of them, the story was, Vai knew nothing when he came to Joe, but he wanted to learn to play some Jimi Hendrix songs, so he showed up with an acoustic and one pack of strings, which he did not know how to put on the guitar. Joe taught him warmups, licks, and basic theory before Vai went off on his own.

They do helpp each other out etc. nowadays though.
