Say what you want but its refreshing for any scottish/irish/welsh band to sing in the style of the local vernacular. It's a hell of a lot more interesting than listening to an imitation of the ubiquitous American style that pervades modern music. Glasvegas are another example, I like them too.
@poontangsta1 Glasvegas would have done this tune better. No one is bashing your heritage, just the band.....relax. No need to put down American music. If they were from America they would receive the same responses.
@axeman7000 Well I am pretty relaxed. But I in no way bashed American music just the American rock/pop "style". There is a subtle difference. And just to be clear I love some American bands... To be honest I can't remember making that comment think I was pretty baked at the time :]
JUst heard the proclaimers for the first time today ,so I came to Youtube to take a look and they are awesome one of many great things to come out of Scotland
Wreckless Eric himself says this is his favorite take on the song. I find it "just okay" but rather plodding. The Wreckless version is my favorite - the Ferrell version a great version for a movie - and there are some really good home takes by folks on the Tube.
Wreckless Eric is best known as one of the original members of the Stiff Records artist roster, along with Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe, and his biggest hit record was "Whole Wide World". This, his debut single, was produced by, and featured bass (and most of the other instruments) by Nick Lowe, with Ian Dury on drums. Eighteen bands have covered "Whole Wide World", such as The Monkees, who covered the song on their Pool It! album in 1987. NUFF SAID
Gotta say, the original by Wreckless Eric is by far my favorite version of the song. He put real emotion into it and with the gravely voice and passion it really matched the lyrics searching the "whole wide world" to find her.
Thanks for posting! I wish I had been there. It was 08 and not 06 tho :)

Of course it's by Wreckless Eric. Why else would the Proclaimers be playing it at the Mathew Street festival IN LIVERPOOL?

I hope everyone knows that this is a song that was recorded the Mponkees before it was covered by Wreckless Eric!
aunthelen 5 years ago
Not according to allmusic.com, unless the Monkees recorded it under a different name. Wreckless Eric is listed with the songwriting credit.
sexyonion 5 years ago
The Monkees definitely covered this song, not the other way around. I mean, it's the Monkees after all. They didn't write much.
