However, I think that you misunderstood something: that was at the early beginnings of Islam, when the message was first revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him). They had to deny their faith and acted in secrecy, as the leaders of Mecca, whose trade was done in the name of ancient gods, would have moved quickly to destroy this new religious movement. I suggest you take things in their context, and ask people of knowledge.
