Microsoft has patents on the mono programming langauge, which the Gnome project has decided to use. What this means in the long-run is that Gnome is including applications that Microsoft can use to sue not only the developers, but the users of the software as well. I highly doubt that Microsoft's lawyers are going to sue anonymous users, but they would have a case against them, in the event that Microsoft did.
