  • my parents live in spain and every time we go on holiday there, we put this on and remember my grandfather. I still love and miss you.

  • the best !

  • Marty Robbins was one of my papaw's favorite singers. I never really knew him, he died when I was around nine months old. But I think that he & I would get along well, just by how much I enjoy his favorite old westerns and singers.

  • I love this music it always reminds of my dad, Marty Robbins and Jim Reeves were his favorites. Thanks for post it, it takes me to very happy place!

  • One of my all time favorites. I bought that one as soon as it came out.

  • I'm 15 years old and listen to current mainstream music. But Marty Robbins will always be my #1 country influence. God Bless Marty Robbins.

  • Applaud, Applaud, Applaud, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MegaAutostop my brother is 65 now but before the cigarettes and beer got to his voice you coukd hardly tell the diff. between him and marty

  • I love this album. My Uncle Royal Churchill introduced me to it when I was a young teenager, so this was the first vinyl I bought back in the early 1960's. Yes, I still have it, but now I can enjoy all of it on you tube!

  • Not letting me respond directly, Friend-please see my previous note if you get this-maybe I'm just messing something up lol.

  • Not letting me respond directly, Friend-please see my previous note if you get this-maybe I'm just messing something up lol.

  • Crashloader-hey Buddy, you sound better-glad to hear, thanks for responding. Great song, and good people who listen to it.

  • than, not that, lol

  • @edddk12 Right on.

  • I still have the original vinyl LP from when I was a little kid some 50 plus years ago (Im 53 now) and I still love that LP !!!! RIP Marty

  • @Stretchup2 Keep that thing in its packaging. Do. Not. Play. It. As much as it calls you...Don't.

  • The Gun was actually a LeBat 44 Cal. they were made in texas in the late 1880's

LeBat also made rifles for the South in the Civil war...

  • Sorry Crashroader-hope things get better for you-maybe Marty's music can help a little-always does for me.

  • This feels like my life. No friends and no where to go. Complete sadness.

  • @crashroader Theres always somewhere to go, when you ride on Ka's wind.

In other words, in case your not a DT reader, If you just go with the flow, There will be water if God Wills It.

  • @crashroader Hope things are maybe a little better for you-I listen to this song about once a month, and find it less depressing that helpful. But then I listen to something of Marty's every day. Anyway, hope you fell better , Friend.

  • Thanks to Bethesda Studios for Fallout New Vegas and using Big Iron. I wished they'd used more of Marty's songs. Seems like a lot of people are discovering this great music.

  • Classic.

  • Hey, it is awesome, maybe best song.

Yeah, I am from Russia and I have never been in USA (although I always had a such dream). Couple of weeks ago I've learnt about him in video game Fallout: New Vegas ("Big Iron" soundtrack). I loved it and then downloaded all his albums.

Now I listen it every day and get such pleasure. It is my favourite one (also I like very much "Alamo" and "Cowboy in Continental Suit"). Such nice, deep and bright music. Shit, I even cry right now.

    Enjoy it. Like I do.

  • @rusfawkesguy I know I do, comrade

  • Comment removed

  • what a awesome song, im only 13 and i love this music

  • me and my great grand pa still listen to oldies like marty, and johnny, and eddie, hes 80 and still thriving

  • This song would have made a good addition to the New Vegas soundtrack, along with his Big Iron, alot of Marty's songs would have

  • boo

  • 3.43 "the 44 spoke and sent lead and smoke,17 inches of flame" I get chills every time I hear that line.

  • @iceandwood actually it's "the 44 spoke, it said lead and smoke" :P And yes, it is an awesome line :)

  • @RabidCookie No S##T I never caught that. I was wro... wro... ok your right

  • @RabidCookie it 'said' huh? sorry mate, the line is..

But the little man's hands was like lightning

The bad Forty-Four was the same

The Forty-Four spoke and it sent lead and smoke

    And seventeen inches of flame.

you see it sent, lead, smoke and fire out the barrel.. that's what happens when you pull the trigger, and it hammers into the bullet.. lead, smoke and fire come out the barrel.

  • @twoheadstalking man's hand was like lightning (too many s' for my own good)

  • @twoheadstalking It's a metaphor you know. The 44 SPOKE. It's a gun, they have no lips, so it is probably a play on words, hence a metaphor, and the gun, if it actually had the power of speech, would likely say something along the lines of lead and smoke. Muzzle flash optional :P I see you know how a gun works, congrats.

  • @RabidCookie idk whether it's "said" or "sent" but I'm pretty sure the metaphor isn't that deep. "The 44 spoke" the loud noise it makes when you fire, "it sent lead and smoke" like sending spit and debris when you speak sometimes. I truly doubt he is going into what he thinks a gun would say if it had the power of speech... but you are entitled to your opinion and if that's how you interpret it, fair enough.

  • @FaceMeetPavement Well you're a fucking retard then. There are a number of lyrical sheets that support Marty's shallow metaphor.

  • @RabidCookie lol settle down, nothing to get shitty over. If that is the metaphor it's a weird one. Thinking a gun would say lead and smoke is like somebody thinking all a human would say is breath and spit. But again whatever man i'm not really bothered by it.

  • I'm 5'5 1/2. My friends range from 5'9 to 6'2. I hate being the short one..... That will all end when I get my leg lengthening surgery! :)

  • Amazing song amazing album. My favorite country singer of all time. My dad knows every song by heart.

  • My dad would sing this along with all the songs on this album. Brings back memories, thanks for the post.

  • mr shorty my dream man where would ya get it in 2010...... and a milk drinker.... wow

  • an all time great song

  • makes me think of Audie Murphy who was only 5.5 but recieved 33 awards including the Congressional Medal of Honor, and was credited with killing over 250 German Soldiers in WWII.

  • @SirRichardBear

Audie Murphy was quite a guy. It's sad that his life wasn't happier & that he died young

  • I had never heard this before but it is really nice.

  • Friends...Dave Stamey has a great rendition of this song. Western music and Western Culture will not die as long as we have the Marty Robbin's, Dave Stamey's or Ian Tyson's to listen to. This is what country music is supposed to be not today's pop!

  • i love this one god bless marty

  • Bad .44!!

  • Thanks for sharing this Marty is one of my favorites. I listened to his gunfighter album as a child and I still have the record today but I had never heard this song. Thanks

  • @mrwarmth21 This song which appears on Marty's album "No. 1 Cowboy" is a classic tune. However, I do not feel that it is as well known to the general public as "El Paso," "Big Iron," "The Hanging Tree," "Running Gun," and even "El Paso City." This guy was a massive talent from "A White Sportscoat" until his last breath.

  • Marty was one of greatest song stylist. With Grady Martin playing guitar this song is particularly strong. A little known song but a classic Marty Robbins offering.

  • He is short, but he can hold his own. NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER! Thanks AlanP...

  • this song is real.

  • not short man but Tall Person syndrome. being taller makes you special. just like in the song. he's the "man" not the little guy. just another bully. colonel colt made us all the same size when he made his first 6 gun. in a gun fight size doesn't matter. have a good day.

  • @zfodge1 the sayin actually goes god created all men but colonel colt made us all equal lol

  • Ricklawrence.... I wore the EGA in the early 80's...I remember the Beirut Barracks Bombing well. Semper Fi , my friend

  • my dad was 5'6" and was a boxer and u.s. marshal. he carried a 38 and was a marshal when they still rode horse and carried 6 guns. grew up with stories of people picking on him for his size marshal or not. me? i'm 5'4" and i was on the navy boxing team and in law enforcement also. i carry whatever feels good for the day. unlike my dad i don't shoot clay pigeons out of the air with a 6 gun! i need alot more pactise for that!!

  • @zfodge1

    Short man syndrome.

    Mr. Shorty weren't a cop.

  • @flatshod Right on!!

  • Google

ON MY GENE AUTRY GUITAR says John Joseph O'Brien

FOR MY FATHER , JOHN PRINE , AND JOHN F. KENNEDY and SALVADOR DALI

    I PLAYED MARTY ROBINS " MISTER SHORTY " :-)

  • When I was a kid I had a Bassett Hound named Mr. Shorty. My dad named him after this song.

My dad was teasing the dog when he had a cow femur to play with, pissing the dog off - he made the dog pick up the bone because it looked funny to watch him do it. Mom asked dad to make him do it one more

  • Best singer ever lived.

  • he and johnny horton, Dean Martin and johnny cash.

  • @willconow i agree, without a doubt marty was the best

  • cut my teeth on this album growing up. RIP Marty!

  • Yeap...Marty is missed, what a talent...and knew how to live on the dirt tracks and stock car asphalt! Check out the duet Merle Haggard and Marty... Excellent duo!

  • my dad met him a long time ago and you know what my dad says about that. its nothing big. I was like NOTHING BIG

  • DAMN! What a song. Marty was the man when it came to a cowboy song!

  • its BAD 44.

  • is it bat 44 or bad 44 ive googled "short barreled bat 44" and got no results...

if you like marty robbins listen to billy walker's 'cross the brazos at waco'

  • Damn, Marty's the man! Biggups to Shorty(uh... Mr.Shorty)

  • REgardless, there's always someone better ....

  • Now I know what albums I want for Christmas.

  • mr. shorty...? not on gun fighter ballads....which album is it on?

  • i actually spoke to him when i was 8 yrs old....my dad made a point to bring me, on his shoulders to the stage so i could ask marty to play strawberry roan. he laughed and played it the next song.

  • I believe the old saying, "God made man, but Samuel Colt made them equal," (An advertising slogan for Colt Manufacturing) ... There are a number of variations on the same theme that appear ... "God may have made men, but Samuel Colt made them equal" ... God didnt make all men equal, Sam Colt did ... God made man equal. But, Colonel Colt made some more equal than others ... God made every man different; Sam Colt made them equal." ... some will disagree about God but not about Colt

  • im short and i hate it! the only thing good about being 5'4" is i shure can ride and rope well

  • Baloney, I'm your size and have lived by the old adage,it ain't the size of dog in the fight it's the size of the fight in the dog.

  • That's when you shoot the dog and his stupid fucking owner, dickless.

  • Yep, that's where the Colt comes in. XD

  • Yep, take your pick Bro, 1911 or single action army. I like Patton's idea, one of each.

  • To me he,s the best countrysinger ever, together with good old Slim Whitman

  • i love this song. I like how marty sings.

  • i'm a short person too, but never thought

of this song as a social comentary. although i gather in the West, it was more of a hangup about you're man hood then now.

  • This was written by Mart for his brother, my grandfather. God I miss this guy. Thanks for posting this song.

  • 50 years old best story teller may be

  • my pa actually was like Mr Shorty he didn't pack a gun he used his fists and would defend himself when he had too he loved this song too I miss my Pa

  • I'm 5.3 and carry a .41 magnum. In Beirut I carried an M60 machine gun - On the streets of that city it felt like an empty water pistol and I felt about 3 foot 2. It's not what you carry, its how you carry what you have. Your dad must have been one hell of a man. I guy I would have liked to have by my side on the bad side of the green line in Beirut in the early '80's .

    Semper Fi

    Rick Lawrence

  • @Ricklawrence More power to you, my brotha.

  • @Ricklawrence thankyou for your service marine semper fi

  • @Ricklawrence Thank you for your service! Happy Thanksgiving!

  • he sounds like quite a character. God bless him and u

  • @flores1450 i know exactly how you feel

  • @flores1450 truly sorry for your loss :(

  • Great lyrics!

  • first time i heard this song, hope it's not the last...nice one

  • @sameoldfitup2008 - behind all pushes to turn White countries in to non-White countries you will find a Jew. It isn't happening in Mexico. It isn't happening in Asia. It isn't happening in Africa. Listen to whiterabbitradio

  • @ScottfromTexas What does your hate speech have to do with a great song?

  • I love this album, it's my favorite out of all my Marty Robbins albums I have.

  • I grew up thinking my dad was a cowboy in his younger years! We had an ornamental gun over the fireplace and he told me it was his gun when he was a cowboy before I was born. I was mortified when I realised it was just fantasy - a bit like finding out Santa Claus didn't exist. I really thought this song was about my Dad. Fabulous and brings back many lovely memories. Thanku for posting!

  • good song

  • this is one of my dad's favorite songs witch he was lay to rest too witch who i dearly miss with all my heart.

  • Here's a quote from a Marty Robbins interview: "I wrote that about my brother. My brother was only about five-five. I'm a littler taller than he is; I'm about five-nine. He worked for me at one time, see, and so I said--I was just joking--and I said, 'Hey, shorty.' He said, 'It's Mister Shorty to you.' I said to myself, what a great title for a cowboy song. So I wrote it."

  • Hello,

i'm a man from the Netherlands, but i like Marty Robbins very much! Especially his gunfighting songs....Wonderfull!

  • I haven't herd these song in a very long long time. It reminds me of a time with my uncle out in Texes

  • no it sure isnt but were glad they put it in he didnt have to hit him the damn flame wooda got him lol y00sta

  • hi my name is mary and i am from ireland i love marty

  • For all the posters incorrectly quoting the famous Colt firearms slogan, it actually goes like this:

"Be not afraid of any man, no matter what his size. When danger threatens. call on me and I will equalize" It seems "Mr Shorty took this advice to heart.

  • No one is going to believe me, but I was married to the man whom Marty Robbins wrote this song after! My husband died 01-12-07, age of 69, from an car accident. He met Marty in a little bar, he told him about how he shot a man. While he was overseas his wife cheated on him, was with child when he got back. He told Marty how he took his gun, met the other man, shot him, didn't kill him, but both of them were in trouble, because they was in the Air Force. This is where Mr. Shorty came from.

  • You are correct. I do not believe your story. On the other hand, This Tune is my fovorite Marty Robbins Song. I saw Marty Robbins Live in Utah. He was a little (well drunk) He and His Band Played this song and, "The Big Orange on His Lip" (True Story) I will never forget Marty Robbins.

  • Marty Never Drank Sir you are very wrong

  • Ok kitloft, You may be telling a True Story. I apologize if I offended You. "The Little Mans hand was like Lighting, The Bad 44 was the same" ahh Marty Robbins.

  • Marty is one of my favorite singers, and my husband did sing his songs just like Marty, in fact it scared me how much he sounded like Marty. When you didn't believe me it's not important that you don't. I know how he sounded and I know for a fact this song was wrote for my husband because of what my husband said, and he was only 5'1". He was a little man! He had a 44! In fact I still have it.

  • shorty's bite was bigger than that other fella's bark."very instuctive" R.I.P...MARTY "MISTER" ROBBINS.....

  • my mom still has all his albums and got one of her album covers signed after meeting Marty Robbins shortly before he died. Sunday mornings after church she would crank up the stereo with Marty and fry chicken.

My dad even added extra speakers so she could listen downstairs.

Oddly enough, in later years all 9 of us kids would be accused of playing our music too loud.

Marty Robbins was a true stiry teller. Still love his music after all these years.

  • Mister colt has made everyone equal, but nowadays someone who doesn't like handguns is in office.........God help us who want to defend ourselves.....

  • neither do I know why this album cover is representing this song,... it was not on the LP.

  • my Father once or twice told me we were related to Sam Bass... I forget how it went, the lineage was too long,... years later I saw a movie which had Sam as one of the characters. he was not one of the good guys... what this has to do with the brilliant Marty Robbins is anyones guess,... I have'nt a clue.

  • I love Marty's quote "There is country and there is western music but they are not the same, country and western anr not the same".

    beachboyrohan

  • This version of the song seems to have a couple of additional verses. Very cool.

Guess we better find this recording for our collection.

    Thanks for posting.

    :~)

  • god created man but Mister Colt made them equal

  • Marty was a true singing cowboy, wonder what influences he would've gave if still alive.

  • this re mind my of waney the train if you see the man youll know .grate song thanx

  • Very Very Good, they do not sing like this anymore,

  • awesome :D

  • *Chills* Man, I haven't heard this in forever, My dad had a tape of most of Marty Robbins' songs, and this one was one of my favorites.

Big Iron, Old Red, they were all amazing. There's just something haunting about the way that he sings that will never get old.

  • Yeah my pops had a 8-track of his greatest hits we played the heck out of it, this song was one of my favorites. Haven't heard it in ages, thanks whoever posted it.

  • Yer my dad also has a cassette of Marty Robbins, i wore it out! This one was also one of my favourites, he was a great singer for that kind of music. Great stuff.

  • thanks for uploafing this song i always loved marty's ballads of the old west.

  • my fav marty song i loves this song the best male country singer ever born

  • ....he will never b matched...legend

  • dont think people know how to wright songs like this any more

  • Someone needs get kicked in the ass and write song like these today.

  • im 14 and listen to rap but this guy is good i usaully hate country but this song is tight

  • Hey Metal, I was wondering what led you to this video I why you decided to give it a listen?

I'm glad that you liked it. Marty is one of my favorite country singers. If you like this song, you should give "El Paso" and "Big Iron" a listen too. They're similar in subject matter, about Western Shoot-outs.

  • when Marty sang these ballads you did'nt need a tv to see the westerns, he told the whole show with his words. Love ya Marty..You were the best at what you did.

  • How true, all you had to do was close your eyes and you could see everything happening. I spent my teen years listening to Marty, he taught me to dream.

  • I would agree. His tremendous depth of talent and ability to create and bring stories like this to life with such clarity, emotion and power is amazing. And he could do this so naturally with such grace and fluidity that it appeared effortless on his part. Furthermore, his virtually perfect and amazingly expressive voice always conveyed his natural, clean sense of goodness and decency.

  • I haven't heard this song in years, thanks for posting.

  • "The .44 spoke. It sent lead and smoke. Seventeen inches of flame."

One of my favorite song lyrics.

"..they won't forget how a .44 gun, once made the difference in size."

Works every time. Just don't bring a pistol to a rifle fight.

  • This song fits the relationship that I have with my older brother. He is five nothing about 150 pounds. I am 5'6 and 215. He fights harder and longer than any other man that I know.

  • your fat

  • It's not the size of a man,it's the fight in a man ;)

  • sweet , i love this soge

  • My Dad had this Album. I always loved this song..Thanks for taking me back....

  • my mom had this album, loved it. It brings back memories of growing up in St. Maarten, where CW is not popular. Good music is good music. Long live MR.

  • Thank you for posting this long version, I hadnt heard the unedited song...

  • tamesidecitizen.blogspot

  • marty is one of the best, thank you

  • This was my grandads favourite song of all time and hearing it brings a tear to my eye thankyou for putting this up as its a great way to remember him by.God rest you Stan the man Roberts

  • Always my favorite MR Song. I've listened to this over many times. Great...

  • What would be great is if someone put "Felena" on here.

  • there is a copy of felena from el paso on another channel, [not a good one] it runs 8 minutes i like it also, i have a cd copied from napster

  • Do you mean El Passo? It's on.

  • No it's a trilogy. El Paso, El Paso City, and Felena. El Paso is the first song, El Paso City is him talking about the song and he believes that was him in another life, and Felena is the story of Felena the girl the song is based around.

  • Thanks for that. I'll have to look out for the others.
