  • Both the cover and the original are enjoyable songs. Everybody chill out....

  • I heard the both versions, and I like both :) By the way, Bowie's version is more magical and espiritual to me than the other one.

  • There can...and only will be one definitive version..... DAVID fucking BOWIE'S version. Listen to that riff and little scales from Ronson, insanely tasty. The sound is unique, it's like some creepy, latin/metal/organ induced music that is totally from another planet. Bowie and his men from mars were truly ahead of their time....

  • The other day somebody told me "When you're young you think the world is for sale," but I know it's already been sold! ;)

  • Happy Birthday, Mr. Bowie!

  • Bowie wrote some pretty silly songs, but he also wrote some of the greatest songs... such as this one.

  • ashes to ashes and the man who sold the world have an otherworldly dreamlike quality which makes them immortal masterpieces, and man gave way to my favorite performance by nirvana. thanx to bowie

  • I don't say this to bother Bowie's fans, but I prefer Nirvana's cover of this song

  • @pennylane314666 Me too

  • @pennylane314666 To Nirvanas honour must be said, that the intire UINY labum was in fact quite brilliant - and that they managed to introduce some classics, such as this one and many Meat Puppets songs to a younger and - ehrm - less knowing audience.

  • @cxmafia Still, it wasn't a true unplugged album. Cobain's guitar was an acoustic, but it was modified (Or maybe built, I'm not familiar with the type of guitar he was using.) with an electric pickup in the neck position. He stashed an amplifier beyond a stage prop. So that's kind of cheating, isn't it?

  • @thewriter1008 If you're gonna be that picky you might as well say that it wasn't a true unplugged album because they used microphones and acoustic guitars that plug in to acoustic guitar amps.

  • @SBTmusics Do you know the point of an unplugged album or the thing that distinguishes an acoustic guitar from an electric guitar? It's all about the sound. An acoustic is supposed to be simple - stripped down. No electric amplification (I don't consider preamp systems electric amplification.), no effects pedals...nothing. The point is, quite simply, not to use electric instruments or any similar trickery. So Cobain using an electric guitar totally defeats the purpose.

  • @pennylane314666 thanks for respect everyone's music tastes. :)

  • For some reason I like to think of Bowie talking to his future self, and being dissapointed in what he'd become. I mean assuming Bowie became something he didn't like, I picture him talking to himself and asking how it had come to him ending up this way. #

    Strange ramble

  • @VaanBeast226 i like your theory a lot and could not disagree with it at all friend!

  • @VaanBeast226 I understand where you're coming from...

  • @bmoreravens12 i have heard the Johnny Cash cover and have to say it's crap

  • this would make a good james bond theme title!

  • @doctorw2 It WOULD make an excellent James Bond theme Title and theme song. And the megalomaniac villain could be played by Bowie himself! as a singularly gifted artist caught up in evil schemes, forgetting his integrity, who sold the world to a very popular but less talented group of musicians who mangled his song and offer absolutely nothing new but a greedy waste of time. Eventually 007 destroys the hypnotizing MTV ray machine, listeners can keenly realize that no one should ever cover Bowie!

  • The Nirvana´s version drums are so simple ... these are much better , but i like the cover best, Kurt´s voice is great.

  • original is always going to be better then a cover

  • @wozzer7 That isn't always true. Some covers tend to be better than originals. Ever heard of "Hurt" by Johnny Cash? Nine Inch Nails did the original, but Cash did it better. I may be more of a fan of the NIN version, but Cash's version is just amazing.

  • @wozzer7

not for all along the wtahctower by bob dylan

  • the drums for this original are much more interesting than nirvana's version, however. I'll always be a fan of the nirvana version overall though.

  • The Bieber, really? Why is he in a discussion about musicians? Bowie and Nirvana are/were musicians, the Bieber doesn't belong in that discussion, regardless of whether you like "his" music. He should be discussed along with Selena Gomez, Miley Sirus, etc.

That said, I honestly can't decide which version I like better; I think they're both pretty special. I like them for different reasons. The final nod from me might go to Bowie, cause he wrote it.

  • Nirvana Acoustic is better than david :D

  • i seen the nirvana version first, i like the nirvana version better, no offence to any other people that like this one or both equally, i just like the nirvana version better..

  • God that picture of him in a dress brings back memories. For my school O`level oral exam i used that picture amongst others when i stood in front of the class and announced "I am going to give my talk on the sex life of David Bowie".

I can still see the look on my teachers face to this day. Mind you it must have been good i got an A.

  • I love Bowie, but i've gotta admit that Nirvana's version is much better. Kurt opens up his heart in that performance.

  • that last part scares me

  • And Yes, I've heard both version and I like both!! Bowie and Cobain, two different styles, but the same masterpiece! :)

  • This song is soo awesome!! makes me thrill.. kindda scary ..

  • :-)

  • Brilliant song by a brillant artist... Love his vocals in the end. I always get so sad when I listen to this though...

  • What version is a cover of what version? Who wrote it? thanks!

  • @Coelones Bowie wrote it. I love both versions, but I just like Bowie more than Nirvana

  • @Coelones david bowie originally wrote (created), sung and recoreded this song...

Nirvana (cobain) just covered it live.....

  • @jeanbilliejean Thanks! i just had the doubt hahah :)

  • I PREFER MUSIC

  • To me, writing a song is more impressive than performing it so, regardless of who plays the song better, I have more respect for Bowie.

Also, he sings it better :)

  • The lyrics are also cited as reflecting Bowie's concerns with splintered or multiple personalities, and are believed to have been partially inspired by the poem "Antigonish" by William Hughes Mearns:

“ Last night I saw upon the stair

A little man who wasn’t there

    He wasn’t there again today

    Oh, how I wish he’d go away…”

  • i love this one which is the original, but i preffer Kurt Cobain's version

  • and the magic of opinion is why fascism should never prevail

  • fuck nirvana, fuck bieber, fuck ga ga. when people get here they must talk about bowie´s greatness.

  • @kjsh987 That's called fascism, mate

  • Nirvanas cover is way way way better

  • This is my favourite Bowie's song. I love it.

    Great Bowie!!! *___*

  • Sounds a bit like a Syd Barrett song to me.

  • Why does Bieber always have to come into discussion anyway?

  • @Rush0lmeRuffians Because some poeple dont know no bettahh, haha. Nirvana's cover of this song is the ONLY song I can stand by them now.

  • Never heard the actual song of this...Bowie in a dress...man you're one weird cat Ziggy.

  • I thought Cobain died alone a long long time ago?

  • @marcuscato bad taste but funny as hell

  • @marcuscato: '94

  • I like to throw my two cents in about the Nirvana and David Bowie Argument. They both respect each other, and I am guessing they would want each everyone of you to respect each other as well.

  • Lapsed time - dreamlike lyrics...beautiful x

  • This song is Spiritual.

    -_-_-_-_-_-----_---_-_

  • The comparison of Cobain to Bowie with regards to this song is a bit lame.

Go watch Cbain rehearsing this song as he reads the lyrics from sheet music and come back and tell us how his version is superior to the person who wrote the song and performed it over 20 years previously!

If others want to cover it, fine. But Bowie owns this song.

  • Bowie's original is one of his best songs ever...Nirvana's cover is respectable and intense

  • Bowies original, a rich tapastery of musical genius & poetic excellance, kurt Cobains version is a fitting and brillaint tribute to Bowie and proves how much influence he had in Kurts life.

  • Bowie all the fucking way!

  • excuse me, this is kristan exercising my R or r ight of freedom of speech, who is in charge here?

  • both versions of the song are fine. i like Bowie and Nirvana

we should really start complaining when Bieber makes a cover of this...

  • was there ever any version of anything that grabbed your ears & sang to you soul as bowie has?

  • @59bdavis yea kurt cobain singing it makes you want to cry cause its soo fucking beautiful....david bowies is very good also though

  • This is Evidence that God talks through People.

  • In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter whether commenters prefer David Bowie's version, Kurt Cobain's version, or both. Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one.

So stop fighting and listen to the song.

  • @riverlioness Dude stop fishing for thumbs up lol

  • Hm, I never knew this was from David Bowie. I just remembered hearing the Nirvana song in the 90's and I was looking through Bowie videos and saw this. Interesting.

  • Stop with the Bowie/Nirvana arguments. We can all agree on something: Justin Bieber is shit.

  • This song was great in the 70's...it's great in 2011 and will be great in 2030! This is a rare case of a song which is always contemporary and that'll never sound old. Only a genius like Bowie could have made it! "...We must have died alone....a long long time ago...."

  • it honestly doesnt matter who's version is better because everyone likes different things so yeah no one can actually win this argument....it's all opinion so give it a rest, and listen to the damn music

  • It's really pointless to argue about whose version is better. The whole reason Kurt covered the song was that he thought it was great stuff. I don't think people cover songs because they want to compete with their inspiration.

  • Why are we having arguments about which version is better, when we should be talking about how good David Bowie looks in a dress?

  • @GivepeaceachanceJL I think he looks good :]

im also a fan of a shock rocker, so im used to weird stuffs :)

  • @GivepeaceachanceJL Omg! I was thinking the exact same thing!

  • @GivepeaceachanceJL

Oh shit..... That's Bowie in a dress? I thought it was some random model

  • @mrc560 one gourges ass model hahaha. but im not gay he's just a very handsom man

  • People, stop arguing. David Bowie and Nirvana are both quality artists, Justin Bieber isn't. There is no chance that a teenage boy scout with a girl-like voice would ever cover a song of any of these two. It's too hard for him to cover and it' doesen't fit into teenage girls' ears, who are his primary target audience.

In my opinion tastes differ. One may prefer either version ot this great song, but anyways we must thank Bowie for making such a nice piece of music.

  • @Kumerinho He considers himself the Kurt Cobain of our generation. Sooner or later, if he wants to keep that image, he'll have to.

  • @thewriter1008

Did he actually say that he thinks he's the Cobain of our generation?

Wow... he clearly knows nothing about the life Cobain lived.

  • @cockardo Yep. Wouldn't be the first thing he doesn't know a thing about. What I think is that he wants to be the same symbol of culture that Cobain was in the 90s. He never will be, though.

  • @Kumerinho you are very smart not gonna lie

  • @Kumerinho Hey... im a teenage girl.. i fucking hate Bieber

  • @steph1232009 Nobody ever said "all teenage girls love bieber"

  • @steph1232009 yea, we really dont care. I know i sound like a asshole, but somebody has to say something.

Honestly, we dont need to know how old you are and what music you like or dislike. When you mature, you will find out that all music genres are great in their own way and you also have to realize that a particular artist doesnt suck just because you said so. Everyone has a different taste in music, which is why music is so popular and great, so just try to be a little less oblivious.

  • @Qdude88 Fair enough, im not expecting you to care, i wouldnt either, i'm just sick of music being classed by stereotypes. I never said Bieber sucked... just said i hated him if you'd like to reread that

  • @steph1232009 Yeah you have a point, i see what you mean. And when you said that you hated him, I'd assume that you think that his music sucks too.

I wouldnt make much sense to say that you hate someone and then say that you love their music.

  • @Qdude88 Not necessarily, if i knew someone and i didnt like them, but they were able to sing really well, id still listen to it. I dont like what ive heard of Justin Bieber, he strikes me as a spoilt brat, but i cant deny that his voice has a quality that people like. Not personally, but some people

  • @steph1232009 True, but hatred is a strong emotion. And, for example, if you hate bieber, its common that you would try to find every mistake and flaw he makes. Eventually, that hatred is going to lead you to believe that bieber isnt all that great. Its just human.

  • @Qdude88 Wow, haven't seen a better comment in quite a while. I totally agree, but unfortunately, far too many people don't see it that way.

  • Comment removed

  • @Qdude88: I agree its very subjective in nature, and if it sounds good to you it really doesn't matter how dated it is or if it is incongruous with what the rest of your generation "enjoys." Posting your age gets redundant (I'm three years old and like Mozart, duh).

  • @ccmm53095 haha yeah, that is exactly my point.

  • @Qdude88 this comment should be copied and attached to all the music videos....

  • @RuningUphill Why thank you kind sir or madam

  • @Kumerinho clearly you have not caught the bieber fever.... yet

  • @paulmcguiness i wud rather kill myself before i catch tht fever....

  • @Kumerinho Oh look, another generic Justin Beiber comment getting a ton of likes... Why is the internet so obsessed with that kid?

  • @Ninvus2

you are no better for mentioning him yourself, my friend

  • @Ninvus2

you are no better for you have mentioned him yourself, my friend

  • @Kumerinho You brought it up -.-

  • @Kumerinho whoose justin bieber?

  • @Kumerinho Who gives a fuck about Justin Bieber? Honestly, I get pissed off every time I see someone bring him up in an invariably played-out top voted comment. I don't spend every waking moment thinking about him, unlike some- unless they're just thumbs-up whores.

And don't upvote this comment- It would be counterproductive for others to come to this video and have to see his name.

  • sorry this is so much better than nirvana.

  • good fuckin song

  • Beyond this, the episode is unexplained: as James E. Perone wrote,

Bowie encounters the title character, but it is not clear just what the phrase means, or exactly who this man is. … The main thing that the song does is to paint — however elusively — the title character as another example of the societal outcasts who populate the album.

In common with a number of tracks on the album, the song's themes have been compared to the horror-fantasy works of H. P. Lovecraft.

  • What's too bad is that Nirvana's cover sounds almost exactly like Bowie's: Not a shred of originality. All of the best covers are extremely different.

  • David bowie and Nirvana. I understand that people have separate opinions, and it doesn't matter what that opinion is. Haters gonna hate. whichever one you prefer, i will respect your decision. I, personally, preferred nirvana's version, purely for the reason that David's voice is quite robotic, and i don't like that. Other than that, great song. BTW: Nirvana covered this out of RESPECT, not to try and take claim for david bowie's song.

  • @loweydude220 pfft robotic. Bowie is a legend. more of a legend than Cobain will ever be.

  • @snuau I'm not saying David bowie is any more or less of a legend than kurt cobain. All i said is this music isn't really my style. You may be wondering 'If it's noy tour style, then why are you watching this?' The reason i watched this is because i liked a cover and wanted to hear the original. But i will still respect you.

  • I love both versions. I don't understand why everyone has to fight over it.

  • @PunkyBear914 Me neither.

  • Woah! David Bowie covered Nirvana!(Just kidding)

  • specifically, jesus christ

  • hell you all, it's about religion...duh

  • david bowie is the master of this song....cobain does a great version...but no comparison in my opinion

  • <3

  • I love NIrvanna & Bowie's version, both are different so it's great that they exist to provide different perspectives on the same song. I think Kurts version is more musical, more emotional, and Bowie is more cerebral and mysterious.

  • @modulomath

They sold their soul to the one that's maybe why they know..

  • @CheckinGagaiNagain No, you are wrong, they did not sell their souls. This music is about something like that though.

  • @modulomath

    Am all ears!

    What is it about?

  • @modulomath I completely agree.

  • This song is about the man who was responseble to sell ICBM Nukes to Israel.

Israel has target every major city and alot of minor citys as well all accross Europe and other capital cityes and countries around the world.

If Israel goes down they will take the world with them they say...

in the book "The International Jew" they talk about how the Jews believe that one day they will destroy all the Gentile nations in a world war

  • @jultomtemor

    interesting!!

    Who was he?

  • @jultomtemor Like most bigots, you are 100% wrong. First, Israel did not have uranium enrichment capability until 1973, three years after this song was released. Second, they didn't have deliver systems until the late 1970s. Finally, Bowie's song is about multiple personalities and social outcasts. Check wikipedia. Finally, "The International Jew" is not a book, it's a series of pamphlets from 1920 by Henry Ford. Go drown yourself in a bathtub.

  • I like Bowie's Version better than Nirvana's but I'm glad Kurt covered it. The lyrics for this song are my favorite rock lyrics . I understand that it can be interpreted in many ways. To me the song is about how illusive the ideas of success and power are in the world of men. This song is about the heaviness of being a man to the world's standards and how it can create something ugly inside some of us that never seems to go away throughout the ages." I thought you died alone, a long time ago"

  • @pistolpimp36

i do not belive it can be interpreted in so many ways!

  • Bowie for the win!

  • Nirvana version is way better

  • Glad to find the original. I enjoy this as much as Nirvana's version, but it gets extra kudos for being the original and is a bit atmospheric. Yea!!

  • One of my all time favourite songs here.

  • nirvana were a great band, but ain't got shit on bow dawg !

  • Does anyone else think that the cover is extremely cool? lol before i thought it was gay but now i think i see how badass it really is!

  • haha! I was listening to this on my iPod using my brother's iHome and he heard the beginning where David's voice isn't clear and is... well, I don't know how to describe it but you all know what I mean. Anyway, my brother flipped out and sasy, "TAKE IT OFF! SOMETHING IS MESSING IT UP AND YOU'RE RUINING MY iHOME!" I laughed and told him that was the way it was supposed to sound!

  • The mind of Mr. Jones...

  • AH BRO NIRVANA SO COOL BRO I LOVE HOW HE SINGS BRO "NAAA NUHHH NUHHH NUHHH BLAAAAA@!! NUHH NUHHH NAAAA" NIRVA HERO FOR EVER LOVE U KURT WOOOOOOOO...

  • @OctoSnuffaluffagus I so much agreed with and enjoyed your comment. I just had to correct my 16 years old cousin who posted a quote from the song on her FB page saying it was a Nirvana song...I love their cover too but I felt a shiver when I read her post and had to make her understand. Obviously linked her here. Hopefully gaining Bowie another fan.

  • Great performance, i've made a cover of it too, please check it out: ?v=0Y1n6DJqG2g

  • the original song is only the best.highier importance has been already given to the value of the track and not to the popularity(like nirvana)

  • the original song is only the best.highier importance has been already given to the value of the track and not to the popularity

  • you could say maybe nirvana made this song more famous

  • Early Signs Of AutoTune.

  • @TheWildshadow That's just what Bowie's voice sounds like. See, this track was released about 1973. Auto tune wasn't invented until the 90's...1996 if memory serves. Plus, the way Bowie views music seems to me like he sees it as more of an artform. I think that he wouldn't use auto tune. Ever.

  • @thewriter1008 i wasnt trying to say hes bad,its just the way it sounds,i love bowie, hes brilliant.

  • Hi, Listen to my cover..hope u like it

    watch?v=TZUVZLhhXrE

  • On the Nirvana vs. Bowie debate, I prefer Bowie's vocals here, and I think the key in this one sounds more urgent. I like that about it. Plus, Mr. Bowie gets writer's credit.

  • I think both the Nirvana version and Bowie Version are genius. In fact i saw a cover that Lulu did of this song and it is also killer

  • @IronManFranco1992 Bowie Produced Lulu's version (as well as sang backups & played the sax). Ronno on guitar - basically the Spiders From Venus.

  • I rather be listening to this song than have sex or taking drugs.

Or maybe doing both at the same time. And eating.

I love eating not as I love Bowie.

  • I wish Radiohead would cover this song. It's the flip side of Creep.

  • I love this song. The original. To made a version is not to cover the original, but to "reimagine" it. Cobain's version is just a cover. A good cover, but didn't give anything but his good will.

  • ahhh. its okay to cover it as long as they tell who who u is the original artist ..... i am very old and prefer the originals, but the young people today only find the way to the good old music, if they listen to coverversion and then discover the other songs of the old times...

  • @HolgerHelfert I'm a big Nirvana fan but I always prefer the originals of every song... Somehow there is this special something in the originals missing from the covers or remakes. Maybe that special energy and spirit your songs obtain when written for the first time? And btw just ignore those nasty comments from my fellow Nirvana fans. Sometimes a band so big creates ridiculously loyal (read: RUDE) fanbases.

  • ahhh. its okay to cover it as long as they tell u is the original artist ..... i am very old and prefer the originals, but the young people today only find the way to the good old music, if they listen to coverversion and then discover the other songs of the old times...

  • Let me put it this way: NO ONE SHOULD EVER EVEN TRY TO COVER BOWIE!!!!ANY other artist can reasonably be covered ( even The Beatles' Dear Prudence was coverd great by Alanis Morissette in a live tribute[ check it out! ]. But anyone trying to do Bowie or even a tribute or their own "version" should think again or have their head examined. His genius and style are so inimitable that anyone ends up looking like the poor cousin. Nirvana did nothing for this song. But no one else could have either.

  • Orgasmic. :D

  • bowie for president.

  • The song's title is similar to that of Robert A. Heinlein's 1949 science fiction novella "The Man Who Sold the Moon", with which Bowie was familiar. However, the song has no similarities with the story of the book. The persona in the song has an encounter with a kind of doppelgänger, as is suggested in the second chorus where "I never lost control" is replaced with "We never lost control".

  • if Kurt And Bowie sang the song together that would have been awesome but I love both of them and they are my heroes Nirvana and Kurt was my youth and Bowie besides being great in every way imaginable paved the way for his fellow greats like Kurt

  • I knew there would be Nirvana-Bowie arguments as soon as I clicked on this video

  • david is amazing !

  • I guess OctoSnuffaluffagus and all the other "purists" staunchly believe that Bob Dylan's All along the Watchtower is better then Hendrix's "copy" simply because it is Dylan's song...

  • For the nirvana fanboys: in 10 years justin bieber will cover nirvana songs. At that time the nirvana videos will all be full of comments on how justin bieber's song is preferable to nirvana's 'version' of nirvana songs... then you will feel the burn and melt in a lake of flaming irony.

  • @OctoSnuffaluffagus So true.

  • @OctoSnuffaluffagus Preach it! :D

  • @OctoSnuffaluffagus you just ruined my life. literally im goanna go kick his little pasty white bum if he covers a nirvana song.. or a david bowie song or a queen song or anything that i like because he could never do it better. and theyre FINALLY supposedly making a kurt cobain movie so i consider it a middle finger to beiber fans who believe he is this generations kurt cobain.

  • @OctoSnuffaluffagus I promise you justin bieber will never cover nirvana!
