@miggyback - No, I get the point of the Canon 50mm f1.2L. It does f1.2, BUT for that kind of money and with an L designation, it should be a better built lens.
@ArtoftheImage Is it not well built? I thought It was, my mistake.Even so, the reason your paying so much extra is because the lens does something the others don't do. People drop 10K on a noctilux f/0.95, the only reason being for the f/0.95 and the results that you get. The the price/speed curve of a lens is exponential and I suppose that a slightly better build quality would help you to justify prices, but it shouldn't be a deciding factor. This only my opinion though...
@dollarbill125 - That's a tough call. Both the Nikon 50mm f1.4G and the Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX are very nice lenses and well built. Some folks think the Sigma actually has a nicer bokeh than the Nikon. I'd recommend testing them both in the store to see what you like. See if you can take your camera in with a memory card, take a bunch of different shots, and then review them in detail once you get home.
your thought on the 85mm's? I have a Samyang 85mm F/1.4 (packaged as a Vivitar in some countries I think). I'd love to hear your thoughts about it compared to the Canon F/1.2L and the F/1.4 USM
Just one word of caution regarding DxO mark scores and measurements -they are not so solid/scientific as they appear IMHO.
To see what I'm saying compare for instance the Nikon 50 f/1.8D with 3 cameras: D90, D3, and D3x. Focus on the D90 and D3x. They have almost the same pixel pitch so they should show very similar results in the centre using FX lenses. But this is not the case (keep in mind that using FX lenses on a DX sensor changes the angle of view not the focal length).
@arepicks - You have to consider all the rankings such as High ISO image quality where the D3x is going to stomp on the Hasselblad. Also, when you look at pixel density, the D3x is actually higher.
Numbers dont mean everything. The best test is to take it out and use it then test the pictures.by the way i love sigma lenses. I own a 70-200,17-50 but as i said its all about how the pictures look at the end of the day.
with this case, are you leaning to buy sigma lenses rather than canon or nikon lens? I can see on your previous videos that sigma are getting there on top as well...and it's cheaper!
this is y i don't use DXOMark, you also forgot to mention the fact that the canon 1.8ii beats them all but DXOMark is shit

when the lens price is cheap (for example during the end of fiscal year) used 50/1.2 is only 100USD more expensive than new sigma 50/1.4
dfdtdfdx 9 months ago
@dfdtdfdx - I've NEVER seen the Canon 50mm f1.2L priced that low. If you can find 'em at that price, buy 'em up and resell 'em! :-)

@dfdtdfdx
ups... made a mistake.... narrowest price difference isn't 100 USD but 300 USD between used 50/1.2 and new sigma 50/1.4
i was thinking about sigma 85/1.4 new and used 85/1.2 price difference: 100 USD

Sigma should hire you. Because of your reviews, I'm only buying Sigma lenses.

I think you missed the point of the 50 f/1.2

Good video as ever :)

@miggyback - And you're absolutely right... the 50mm f1.2L 's main siren call is it's f1.2 capability.

Would you suggest the Sigma 50 1.4 over the Nikon 50 1.4G?

Have a look at the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II on DxO, it shows a score of 27 when mounted on the 1Ds MK III. Insane for a hundred dollar piece of plastic.

@Meatmiester plastic fantastic!! haha love that lens!

I dont know whether i should trust this test. The best way is to test out this lenses on your own camera to know which is better.

OMG~!
I Compare 50mm 1.2 vs sigma 1.4 vs canon 50mm 1.8
and 1.8 win!
arepicks 9 months ago
Sigma f1.4 is more expensive than the Canon. So would go for the canon unless the sigma is four stops better.
robertlam18 9 months ago
@robertlam18 - Sigma has much better build quality and warranty.
ArtoftheImage 9 months ago
@robertlam18
But the Canon doesn't feature a real USM, it's only got a micro-motor, fake-USM if you want so and doesn't come with a lens hood.
Four stops? That would be faster than f/0.5 or something...? (f/1, f/.7, f/.5, f/??) :D

what does the L in f1.2L mean
forumpaul 9 months ago
@forumpaul - L lenses are Canon's high end PRO designation, essentially the best lenses they offer.
