Also, this is the sort of racing I want to see!!! I want drivers to be allowed to block! I absolutely HATE "after you" racing, which is what NASCAR is. They need to allow the drivers to FIGHT each other like they did here.
@UltimateWheelman You sir, are the kind of fan that makes me cringe. Allow blocking and there will be wreck after wreck after wreck. if you ever raced at all you would not want unlegislated blocking. The standard practice in most series is you are allowed one move left or right but then you hold your line. If the other guy was faster and makes the pass then take it like a man and try to repass him.
Cheever spent years in Europe in F1 and World Prototype cars and unlimited blocking was big
@knoxstar15 Did you actually READ my post? If you had, you would've noticed that I never mentioned the need for unregulated, unlimited blocking. I was refering to what Cheever did to Jarrett on the backstretch on the last lap. Cheever blocked the inside line and forced Jarrett to the middle of the track. Cheever stayed on the inside and Jarrett went past him. It was aggressive and clean, and the sort of racing I want to see in NASCAR.
What's with this whole "pass in the grass" thing? In 1987, Earnhardt didn't pass Elliot. Elliot was trying to pass Earnhardt, but Dale kept Elliot behind him. Here, Earnhardt didn't pass anybody. He lost places.
Anyway, Earnhardt is LEGEND. The most aggressive racer ever. I personally prefer Petty because Petty was the very definition of DOMINANCE, but Earnhardt was the very definition of GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY!!! :D Love em both.
This is great car control 2x's. First he is forced down to the grass and maintains TOTAL control into the turn and thru, Second he basically PITS Cheevers and does it where cheevers is in no danger - REST IN PEACE.
wish we had the end clip where cheever was afraid to get out of the car because dale was waiting for him! dale's great comment to him "don't worry, I never hit a man in a racecar!"
You dont keep hitting someone all the way down in the grass like that retard. Especially at Daytona at that rate of speed. Dale was agressive at short tracks. Cheever was jealous of Dale being able to see the air, he even admitted to that.
Wow! It's hard to believe Dale Earnhardt would no longer be with us a few days after this race took place. What did IROC do after Dale Earnhardt died? Did they add another driver or did they race with one less car?
They ran only eleven cars for the other three races and retired the #3 when they decided to let drivers use the car numbers they're most associated with, so Helio Castroneves ran #03 in his future appearances, for instance.
earnhardt would've won that race, i miss iroc you really saw who the best driver was unlike nascar where the guys with the best equipment win every race.
anyone have the post race interviews? loved when cheever looked at Dale with fear in his eyes, and Dale just smiled and said, "it's ok, i never hit a man sittin in a car" or something to that effect!
Yeah, he is a cool guy, he isn't that good at commentary. If he comes to NASCAR, (which he wouldn't) he would be more widely known and he'll get payied for what his talent is worth. Plus Scott is young and he can easily work his way up through the ranks and can make to the Cup series in no time. In NASCAR he'll race in front of full grandstands everyweek. In IRL/ALMS he will race in front of half to near empty grandstands.
I remember seeing an interview with Cheever. He said that after the race, Earnhardt came over to him and he was a little scared to come out. However, Earnhardt was smiling and told him he looked forward to him bringing his best to the next race. Cheever was so sad to see him die... he cried in the interview.
only a real driver like Dale Earnhardt can control a car that was about to lose it. Funny how he end up spinning Cheever at the end of the race. You knew he wasn't gonna get away with that. Earnhardt is indeed a class act. Miss da man!
How bout Tony Stewart in 2005 in the busch race doing the same thing, and coming back to win!! i bet if that race had like 20 to go and a ytellow came out dale would have won
@freshgeek89 I was a Mark Martin fan from back in 1990, but damn, I miss Earnhardt! He had his own Code of Honor, which was hard to understand at times, but he held to it.
IROC cars had hand-me-down cup engines. I believe that now that NASCAR needs their engines bc of economy, they dont have the money for IROC

@UltimateWheelman In the 1987 Winston Western 500 at Riverside, Earnhardt passed Bodine on the grass when Bodine got held up by a slower car.

@Asylum31 They should call THAT the "Pass in the Grass". :D

Damn you Cheever!
If Earnhardt wouldve won that Iroc race, it couldve changed history, and Earnhardt not be dead.
Hard to belive that when this was taken, Earnhardt would be dead in just a few days.
pwnzor3000 2 years ago
How would earnhardt not be dead if he won an iroc race that had nothing to do with the daytona 500?
rowdybabb51 2 years ago 3
If he won, then he wouldve done some stuff different, and the events leading up the the final lap might have been different.
If you do one thing, dont you ever wonder what wouldve happened if you did it the other way.
