@titleshot1 Michigan was the national champion in 1997. Tom Osborne complained that his team was given preferential votes because of his pending retirement.
Brent Musburger is the most bias announcer ever amongst announcers who are supposed to be neutral. And whenever he announces an Oklahoma game, he might as well be wearing an OU jersey.
Actually that "roll left" call was supposed to be a quarterback roll out; JB was to get the first down but he spotted his tight end and threw it. So actually it was all JB. Texas ran this too many times.
this is when the state of texas started to have a reniassance in college football. i hate to say it, but the 4 swc schools: baylor,a&m,t. tech, and texas joining the big 8 schools was the best move for all div 1 teams in texas.
As a Gator fan, I watched this game at a sports bar filled with Nebraska fans. I thought I was going to get my ass kicked for screaming so loud on that play. Thank you, Texas, for opening the door so we could win our first NC at the expense of our most hated rival.
@JKM070 Hey your welcome. Leave them up on Alabama videos though, I'm not trying to be a moment-squelcher. Roll tide roll... Most championships, recent Heisman winners, SEC champs, and DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. Your recent success deserves applaud, I was just being bitter. I'm sorry. Go Big Red!!!
I still have nightmares about this game. The Nebraska defensive line was draped all over Brown all game and it never mattered. There was one play in the 3rd(?) where it was 3rd-and-long and they had him dead to rights in the end zone while he was rolling right. Got away and threw a strike to some TE who caught it one inch ahead of the line. I knew it was going to be big trouble right about then
I think my favorite part about this video is Lewis looked up @ the jumbotron & saw he was about to be tackled & THAT'S when he did a double cover on the ball.
Yeah, they went so far downhill that they went 13-0 and won the national championship the next year and then beat Texas in the 1999 Big 12 championship game.
I'm a Florida Gator fan, born and raised--and I can tell you that every Gator fan in the world will forever remember the 1996 Longhorns team for paving the way and clearing the path for the 2nd chance against the Seminoles they essentially delivered to us by defeating Nebraska in the inaugural Big 12 Title game.
well without an RB getting life in prison and Tommie Frazier, I would've taken our chances vs. Nebraska in '96 rather than in '95, lol.
Well actually if Nebraska had won, we wouldn't have had a chance at the National Title period that year. Hopefully this year my team can finally get it done going undefeated!
Btw--I'm actually a fan of Pellini, I hope he can turn that program around.
Your a rare person, one who acutally realizes that the best RB in the country left a year early, and we NU still only lost 1 game. just imagine if phillips would of stayed in 96? I feel pretty confident in saying 4 peat.
That's what made the win so special. At the start of the Big 12, Nebraska was the big dog and was supposed to wipe the floor with old SWC teams. However, Texas set the stage for the future that night. Nebraska is 1-7 against Texas since 1996, the one win coming in the 1999 Champ Game. The South was supposed to be the much weaker half.
Since 96, NU is 4-3 vs TTU and 3-6 vs OU. Since 02, NU is 0-3 vs TTU, 0-5 vs OU and 0-4 vs Texas. Good thing you have A&M, Baylor and OSU to play.
@vindiola Yes. In one of the worst rebuilding years and coaching performances by the Huskers since the 70's. Its real easy to show winning records on NU from '96 or 2002 on...The crazy thing is, Before Calahan, Nebraska's record on Missouri overall is 53-32-3. The second-longest losing streak of 46 consecutive games (behind Notre Dame-Navy's 47 games) was the NU-KU game streak, broken by CALAHAN. Nebraska has a winning record on any Big XII (Big 8 then...) with the exception of MAYBE OU. GBR!!!
@BradenNeddermeyer It's a little difficult to follow your broken english, so I assume you're a Nebraska grad. But, are you saying Nebraska has been in rebuilding mode for the last 14 years? You may notice that your god, Tommy O, is on the sideline of this game, which began Texas' complete dominance of Nebraska. While Calahan was not a good hire for you, he at least brought your offense into the late 20th century.
@vindiola Well, obviously you represent your University without class. Your going to call names and brag about intellect, saying I must be from Nebraska? You must not know Nebraska has more Academic All-Americans than you do. I also find your 14 year rebuilding comment interesting. No, not rebuilding for 14 years. If you notice the records you state from '96 are rather equal, and Nebraska lost Solich in 03-04. He wasn't doing the best recruiting if you recall.
@vindiola He was fired and Callahan came in. REBUILDING. Also the 2002-present record makes 8 years, 5 of which were Callahan's "West Coast Offense" years. This was statistically the worst 8 years of Nebraska football of the last 40 years, so making records from then on is irrational. Furthermore, we WILL see how the fan loyalty at Nebraska goes for the next 10 years. If you recall, we have sold out our stadium over 300 times in a row, even through those 8 years. Did Texas ever do that?
@vindiola The crazy thing is, I was not rude, I did not name-call, and I didn't slanderize your university OR yourself. I simply brought up an opposing view and was attacked personally for it. That simply shows no class... From what I see by the course of your actions, Texas fans could learn a valuable lesson in classy and sportsmanlike behavior from Nebraska fans.
@vindiola Oh, and by the way friend, I happen to be from Kansas. I'm embarassed to have fans like you in my conference. I used to be proud of the Texas faithful until hearing from you. Maybe that is why Tom Osborne AND HARVEY PERLMAN (since 1/2 of the decision is not Osborne's) decided to leave. People like you drove them out. Go everything about Texas with the exception of your behavior, and Go Big Red. Good luck next season, we will see you in Lincoln.
@vindiola they called Nebraska's offense the offense of the 50's. Our response was always: yes it is, because it scored over 50 points a game quite a bit. I'll remind you we embarrassed Steve Spurrier's high tech Fun n Gun offense 62-24 in the 96 fiesta bowl.
@BradenNeddermeyer part 2. Also, since you bring up the dominance of your old Big 8 compatriots, isn't it amusing Nebraska decided to abandon all that history just to get away from Texas and OU. Nebraska will have a tough time recruiting Texas now that you don't ever play here. Good luck recruiting against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State when you are struggling to beat Indiana and Illinois. The quality and loyalty of the Nebraska fan will be fun to see in the next 10 years.
@BradenNeddermeyer this wasn't a rebuilding year for nebraska...the were favorited to win the national championship that year...they were blowing teams out in standard nebraska fashion until the faced a mobile quarterback in jake "the snake" plummer at arizona state...the lost again when they faced another mobile qb in one James Brown...
@BradenNeddermeyer In the history of the 2 schools neb is 4-10 against texas , 38-45 against OU not saying neb wasnt a good school in past but not against those 2
What it comes down to for me is, I was less shocked to see VY run it in than I was when I saw James Brown roll out and throw it to Lewis.
You also have to consider at the time, Texas had spent a ridiculous amount of time prior to that Nebraska win as a mediocre team.
I don't know, you can make an argument for either but to me 4th and 5 was the culmination of great plays by a great player while Roll Left was a defining moment for a team.
Even more, I think this play was a real turning point for Texas football. Although there had been good years prior ('90 Shock the Nation), it had never been like this. Plus, it was a new conference where we weren't supposed to be able to compete and it was against a great team/program that was where we wanted to be.
I think everything that came after (Simms, VY, Nat'l Champ) can be traced to here. If we lose, I don't think we fire Mac II the next year and hire Mack, etc. Changed everything.
Perhaps the greatest play in Longhorn history when you consider all of the implications involved and the fact that we were severe underdogs to one of the best teams in history.
And you gotta love the call "On a roll, gonna throw it, got it, wide open baby, Derek Lewis in a foot race!"
4th and 5 might be the greatest moment, but it's not the greatest play in my opinion. Granted, VY made things look so easy and it's hard to call something great when it looks easy, so it just might be.
But I give the nod to Roll Left because it was by design against a team no one believed we had a chance against, a team many considered the best team ever at that time, a team many thought couldn't be beat.
Perhaps you're being insecure since not many (including those in your own fan base) think you will win this year's Big12 CCG - I don't know, but where do you see that I am making any disparaging comments about Nebraska? In fact, I go as far as calling them "one of the best teams in history".
I'm going to try hard to give you the benefit of the doubt and think perhaps you simply responded to the wrong comment.
It should have been CU and Texas in the 1996 Big 12 championship. We were by far the best team in the north, we just chocked against Nebraska like we've done so often.
played right into Nebraska's speed. "Everybody" knew where that play was going and it was an awesome, if risky, call. That was a different era and Texas was a severe underdog. Going for it was gutsy, throwing was crazy but the play call was perfect. Derek Lewis catching that ball was money and Big Red has hated Texas ever since.
