  • yes - I said it was WWI (the Great War) and refers to the Great Depression which followed the 20's since this was the Bonus Army; left behind and asking for those dimes.Written at the height of the depredation - it is an important reminder of remembering to take care of the men (and women) who help build and protect a nation. I love the pictures of the workers raising the skyscrapers and building the 'Hoover Dam' with the knowledge that they might then be living in Hooverville tramp camps.

  • Take notice: THESE images represent what was being said in the song - the WWI vets, abandoned by their own government during the Great Depression, along with the men who had toiled to build the country. This is the BEST video mix to go with this iconic song and one many of us here at the teacher center use in the classroom to show the MOOD of the time.

  • @celticat27 Actually, it refers to WWI -- it was composed in 1931, WWII started in 1939.
