@backwoodsctryboy It was just running rich that day, as it was still in the tuning phase. After finding the right jetting, it runs great, and doesn't smoke at all.
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR RODS, PISTONS, CARB, AND INTAKE? I'VE BEEN GIVEN DIFFERENT ADVICE ON THE X-HEADS. SOME SAY TRASH THEM AND GO WITH EDELBROCKS. OTHERS SAY TO KEEP THEM AND HAVE THEM REBUILT. ALL I WANT IS FOR MY CAR TO RUN AND SOUND LIKE YOURS. MY BUDGET FOR THE ENGINE IS AROUND$2500.00 THIS IS MY FIRST PROJECT MOPAR, SO ANY ADVICE OR DIRECTION WOULD BE REALLY APPRECIATED. THANKS
@dval426 I wasn't the one you were talking to, but maybe I can help. I'm currently putting together a mopar 400 big block, and I have the stock rods / crank with Keith Black pistons (they're not that expensive). I tore the stock heads down (not 452 heads, the other ones, 9-somethings?) but i'm really considering going with edelbrocks instead. I feel that the heads are the most important in terms of how much fuel you can flow, how big of a carb you can use, etc. Not sure what cam i'm going with.
DAMN!!!! THAT SOUNDS AWESOME!!! HEY, CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME ADVISE? I JUST PICKED UP A PROJECT '68 CUDA WITH A BONE STOCK 340, UNMOLESTED X-HEADS, AND 4 SPEED TRANNY. THE ENGINE RAN WHEN I PURCHASED IT. I RECENTLY PULLED THE ENGINE OUT AND TORE IT APART TO DO A FRESH REBUILD. ITS AT THE MACHINE SHOP NOW GETTING HOT TANKED AND MEASURED. I WANT TO KEEP MY STOCK CRANK, AND WOULD LIKE TO KEEP MY X-HEADS. AFTER SEEING YOUR VIDEO, I WANT TO GO WITH A WHIPLASH CAM. CONT.....
@oohmammaoohmamma The cam is called a Whiplash from Hughes Engines. It is hyd flat tappet made to sound very radical, yet has a ton of low end and mid-range while holding plenty of vacuum. I've ran a ton of cams in small block mopar street cars over the years and this is by far my favorite. It put the car in the high 12s with 8.5:1 compression while remaining extremely drivable. Lift is .512"/.518" and duration is 223/236.
@oohmammaoohmamma No hollow sound at all from the 3". Most of the time, the hollow sound you speak of comes from people running Flowmasters or similar knock offs like in this video. I didn't like these mufflers and only had them on for a week before switching to the Dynomax Ultraflos in my other videos of the car. I couldn't be happier with my exhaust setup. Always get compliments at car show. No drone at cruising speeds, and really comes alive without hurting your ears when I get into it.
nice car!! i have a 69 cuda notchback with a modified 318. mine also smokes too. it still has points in it, but im putting in a proform 50,000 volt hei in it, so hopfully that would cure it. the guy i bought it from kept the points in it, i dont understand why.
Thanks! Yes, the whiplash cam I have in my 340 is a non-roller. That cam would work fine in your 318. Call the fine folks at Hughes and they will recommend the best Whiplash for your engine. But I couldn't be happier with the sound and amazing performance. Way better than any purple cam I've ever ran. As far as heads, I couldn't honestly say if they are 1.88 or 2.02, but in a low 13 second car, it wouldn't make a big difference either way.
Do they make this whiplash cam for the 318 non roller engine? I was thinking about installing the comp 268 extreme shaft because it will work with the stock torque converter. Your car sounds awesome!
Yes, rich. That is what I thought. Pet peeve of mine is being behind an obvious source of pride musclecar that is in poor tune. Cool! Im still deciding on a cam for my injected 403'd 65 Cuda
@pishta1968 The smoke is clearly blue when it's revved up. That's oil, not richness. Sounds awesome, but there's oil getting into the chambers from somewhere.
Thanks for the kudos on the sound. But the oil leak you speak of disappeared when the carb and timing were dialed in. If you watch my latest vid, you will see it no longer smokes.
Thanks. Car is 8.5:1. Factory "J" 340 heads that haven't been modified. 3:91 gears. Running a Holley 750 DP. I will note that getting rid of these Flowmaster style chambered mufflers and switching to Dynomax Ultrafos (Race Magnums) made a huge improvement in performance.
sweet cuda i watched this countless times and cranked up!! i have a 69 barracuda notchback just had dts in michigan custom build me a dana 60 posi with 373s should b going this week
Thanks. To be honest though, I really like the sound of the Dynomax Ultraflos (Race Magnums) in my other videos. I could feel a big difference in performance too. Flowmaster style chambered mufflers will normally always slow you down compared to a straight thru. Good luck with your Cuda, post some vids as soon as you can!
I rolled the dice and bought it because I hoped it would just sound cool, but I was amazed at the performance. Fantastic low end and mid range. I have had the 284/484 and 292/508 purple cams and I like this much better. I actually ET better from this than I did the purples. I highly recommend it. Def not a poser cam.
one more question is this the stock bore and stroke? and im guessing the valvetrain has been completely redone
oohmammaoohmamma 1 month ago
@oohmammaoohmamma Stock bore and stroke. Only upgrade to valvetrain was the springs that Hughes Engines recommended for the Whiplash cam.

Nice sounding ride,so you say this grind was better than your mopar purple shafts? Are your heads 202 or 188 j heads?

@fuhkinay my computer doesnt show it being blue maybe because its a piece of crap maybe thats why he thought it was fuel like I did.

Sweet car!!
