@TinSpajic Dear friend, im familiar with 63-3 london version. This1 here and london's older version are completely different tunes to say so. Newer one has much more different alterations/variations and also tempo is faster. Its kinda crazy live version of his own older version. And no, i cant agree with tune being pitched up in studio. If you pitch it up so much, sound of the track will be much more distorted.
This isn't what Bill had in mind, but I love this. Oscar's taken it and made his own kind of song out of it, and I see nothing wrong with that. He keeps it sweet and melodic anyways, so its just great!
I like the way Bill plays it better, too. A little more depth harmonically is necessary for my tastes. Still, this is some great playing. 1:53-1:57 is just sick.
I like Bill's better. This is brilliant, but too fast for the song it is. (Don't kill me; Bill and Oscar were totally phenomenal, but totally different too.)
@jputterman26 i agree, these 2 are liek 2 different songs completely. Oscar is not playing so much on atmosphere like Evans. However oscar has some new elements which soudn totally striking etc. I love both
@jputterman26 Righto! I love both and have listened to them for 43 years. Like Hemingway said,"There is no order for great artists." Tatum, Evans, and Peterson are my holy trinity of music and jazz piano, now and til death.
@jputterman26 Righto! Just a matter of opinion. My three favorites for the last forty years are Art Tatum, Bill Evans, and Oscar Peterson. I also love Errol Garner. No preference, except Bill's music is more like me. Listen to those mentioned if you love jazz piano. Enjoy; don't make it a contest.
Stop comparing Oscar and Bill. They're two different kinds of players. I wouln't compare Cannonball to Coltrane, because they're two different players. Maybe if you were talking about Art Tatum, that would be a more reasonable comparison but I wouldnt do it. Bill Evans approached the piano with a more impressionistic approach. While Oscar Peterson, focused much more on blues, and a hard swing
Whether you prefer Petersons or Evans has to be subjective, no one is good enough to say objectively. How can one compare apples and oranges? Personally I prefer Evans take 2 as i enjoy this particular tune spoken in the language of Bill! Other tunes I prefer spoken in the language of Oscar!
Bill's is a lot better. However Oscar does have good versions, but this particular one not that great IMO. Check out the one on Jazz Soul of Oscar Peterson.
@shlome100 great version, oscar is an executioner on this though, (he killed it) more notes don't make it better, great representation of oscar's speed and precise technique, love his style!!!! He was obviously bored of the slow soulful version, and decided to go over the top as only he could do soooo well! thanks Oscar rip
@douglong77 Basically in my view - for the people who prefer excited music and fast notes is Oscar the one to choose, and for the people who like more the soulful and soft touch of the piano is Bill the one.
@shlome100 for me it depends on what mood I'm in but in oscar's defense, oscar has been known to play slow emotional music its just that if you can play fast why squander the ability
its too fast and oscar didn't play it that fast - it's pitched
TinSpajic 1 week ago
@TinSpajic sorry i cant agree :) and abut speed.. this is quite solid. Oscars standards were high.

@MrGerdhal :
I know about Oscars incredible speed, but try to play along with this tune .
its in F-sharp major, but he does play it in F major (look at oscar peterson london 1964-3).
So this is pitched a half step up!
