Here's the real tragedy in his death--where were his "friends"? He would still be alive if someone who really cared about him had intervened in his getting professional help. (Not being able to sleep is a clear warning sign of depression.)

He went through some serious emotional trauma--separating from his lover, not seeing his daughter, losing his home, and a challenging role as the Joker. Friends do not let friends suffer alone. People in NYC have a strange sense of "normal" human behavior.
