what is so funny is me and my friends had a backyard wrestling match and my tag name was mr. wizzard my dad said that mr wizzard is a show from the 80s on nickelodian lol!
@steelfoe Was it on that early in the morning? I remember getting up way early to watch it. I thought it was like 6:30am. Regardless, that show was bad ass. Hands down my faveorite show as a kid.
I was born in '84. I remember this show coming on REALLY REALLY early in the morning like 6am here in Chicago. I've spent years trying to remember the name of this show. I am so happy I finally came across it. I have tears in my eyes remembering how cool I thought this was and looking forward to the new experiments. This, Bill Nye and Beakman, made learning fun and cool. I soo miss the 80s/.90s. :'(
@mbenzsl2000 There has been a mad dash to get rid of these kinds of shows for the last 16, 17 years. Now replaced by "shows" about screamming, squabbling whores, crass rich nobodies, midgets playing in chocolet, cracked out teens, people looking for junk, pawn shop antics, vapid couples living in posh houses, and the proving or disproving of urban myths by blowing things up. We have lost our way, Devo was right!
I totally admire the techno-scientific optimism that Mr. Wizard promoted on his show. As I kid growing up in the 80's, I was always inspired by the "horizons of the future" that educational programming had back then. It's a kind of enthusiasm that is much needed today. Meritocratic, forward thinking, inquisitive, intelligent. My nieces have no concept of this kind of TV. Would love to have this show on DVD.
More of a child of the 90s, don't recall much 87-89 stuff, but I sure remembered this show and loved it when I'd be lucky enough to be awake to see it!
The end of this video has a link to "1987 Mr. Wizard explores siphons with girl assistant," but the "istant" got cut off. So, "1987 Mr. Wizard explores siphons with girl ass."
I remember my alarm clock going off about 10 minutes before 6, getting up, pouring myself my favorite bowl of cereal and orange juice and turning on Nickelodeon at 6:00 AM to watch Mr. Wizard. All of the great science experiments, heck even the kids on the show showed great interest in his science experiments. Good times!
This used to be one of my favorite shows to watch when I was growing up. Seeing that old Polaroid camera is kind of tripping me out. I haven't seen one of those even referenced in like a decade.
@Thule000 There are other shows besides Mr. Wizard and Dora the Explorer. What needs to happen in this ever changing world is maintaining a healthy perspective of it. You as one person can't change tv programming, but one can sift through the programming and find some preferences. There are plenty of options. I miss these days, but the memory isn't going anywhere.
I Love him because he taught me really neat science and usable knowledge when most TV (especially now) is complete junk. That, and he could do more on an Apple ][e then I could ever do on a modern quad-core. Seriously.
I hate him though because he got me interested in science. Science is an awful field to be in when the prevailing culture is blind consumerism. With every 'Made In China' purchase you make, God sends another engineer's job overseas.
I remember growing up with this show, same with Eurka's Castle. Mr. Wizard was and is a Science GOD, Kids nowadays wold probably get bored with it if he was still alive. and "if" it was still on the air.
Oh my goodness! I wasn't born until 89, but this show would be on at like 5 in the morning when I was in kindergarten or so, I loved it! I've always wanted to know what this mysterious show in my memory was called.
@tonymo21588 Nick doesn't even deserve the name "Nick" now. God! Between having Mysterious Cities of Gold, Mr. Wizard's World, Spartakus, and so many more....today it SUCKS beyond belief. I miss Doug---the last of the good shows. I once was lucky enough to meet Dave Coulier and we talked about OUT OF CONTROL (my favorite show). I loved Mr. Wizard---I was among the MANY he turned onto science.
MR.WIZARD IS GOD... damn remember Saturday's??? Rainy day...crap outside.... what did u do turn on Nickelodeon and watch Mr.Wizard,You cant do that on television, Out of Control, and Lights Camera Action.....Damn i miss them shows!!!
@Shezusrice I LOVED OUT OF CONTROL. I met Dave Coulier at a comedy club, after his set, and told him how my best friend and I would CRACK UP watching him.
oh man i just rewatched the one where a kid and mr wizard are making a fiery volcano. mr wizard is like you might have made one out of paper mache but this one is made out of asbestos LOL.
I remember a few experiments from this show. I used to watch it all the time. I remember watching Nickelodeon when it was still being broadcasted from Canada before Nick Studios.
This was far and away the quintessential science television show oriented toward youth. It's unfortunate that more modern children-oriented television shows are filled to the brim with over sensationalized content aimed at lining some marketing executive's pocket. I wonder if this type of simplistic programming will ever survive in the mainstream media again?
This was HANDS DOWN my fave show as a kid. Yes I was a geek (and still am). I used to get up early in the AM to watch this. Don Herbert was awesome . I especially liked episodes that dealt with fire. I remember seeing a full set of Mr.Wizard DVD's online, but they were like $100. I may just have to save up some money to get them.
Now we're talking about a show for kids with an interest in how things work. Mr. Wizard held my attention every second of the the show. It came on while I would wait for the bus. There was nothing like snow days or sick days. That's when I could try some of his experiments after the show went off. I was so envious of how he had his Atari computer contected to the tv mounted in the wall. I had to sit with my Radio Shack TRS80 Color Computer on my lap, bummer. Thanks Mr. Wizard!
I was HOOKED on this show. I think it is a large part of the reason I am now a scientist. I was lucky enough to be able to send a fan thank-you letter to Don Herbert before he passed away (bless his soul)... I think many of his shows are on DVD now...

LOL. You know when you've won an argument with a liberal when they start the name calling. Its funny that you concede so early. It is not racist to disagree with Rev. Wright. The bottom line is this country was founded on basic principals and values. If you're not down with those values, and if you dont love America, you should LEAVE.
LOL How can I be racist when I'm a minority as well?! You assume that I'm racist because I disagree with Wright's world views? Wrights world view's are extreme to the Nth degree. So pardon me if I dont agree with his "God damn America" rhetoric. I LOVE my country. If you dont feel the same way, kindly leave and leave ONE beacon of freedom for free people who have no problems with working HARD to EARN their fair share.
This was such a great show. He wasn't as cool as MacGyver though, but much more educational as I think about it. Mr wizard + fighting bad guys = MacGyver
Hell I even remember the intro and this show was years before my time. It must have been the reruns by the early 90's before it was taken off the air.
YES! I loved Mr.WIzards world. He brought a whole generation of kids into the world of chemistry, physics, and biology. And what did we do with this knowledge? Well made crack, crystal meth, ecstasy, global warming, and octomoms. THANKS MR.WIZARD!
Mr. Wizard was SO cool! I remember he actually did some experiments with gunpowder and gasoline! (not together of course!) They were edited out and replaced with less dangerous experiments.
another children's TV hero along with Mr. Fred Rogers, the world sure could use more people and Tv shows in this day and age. i'm glad to have been able to watch a lot of these shows.
I loved this show as a kid. I remember the "high tech robot" they gave basic commands to, and the filling a glass of water across the room with string, and walking through the single sheet of paper (standard) just by cutting it. He was cool. I also remember him as being quite the pyromaniac too. Blowing up balloons (literally). Or how about the egg soaking in vinegar? I wanna be Mr. Wizard! All those cool experiments and the kids clean up the mess!
Haha, I remember waking up at the crack of dawn to watch this show in elementary school. I completely forgot about this show until I saw the intro. Wow, where have the times gone? I'm in grad school now!
Wow, I'd totally forgotten how the show started, but when I was watching it, I remembered every little bit of it! This was one of my absolute favorite shows when I was little, and I still remember a lot of the stuff I learned on it.
I never liked it to much as a kid, but I would do anything to have this and all the other greats back instead of the trash that nickelodeon airs today.
I watched Mr. Wizard when I was in high school during the 80's. During the 70's when I was in elementary I watched Science is searching, Science is everywhere, and Science is discovery on PBS. All three of those shows had the same narrator but I don't know his name. Is it possible to get a link to those old shows?
Man, the opening instantly came back to me (especially the magnet pulling the shopping cart). The glory days of kid's television, the awesomeness of Mr. Wizard, the fun atmosphere of Nickelodeon back in the day!
I love it! It's because of Mr. Wizard that I know so many odd ball things. As 2 sharp objects poking you come closer, eventually they fell like 1. If you inhale a strong scent deeply, eventually you can't smell it. It's impossible to suck liquid through a straw over a certain hight. Heating a can, sealing it and dousing it with cold water will cause it to crumple.
See, these are the useless facts that I've come to love, and they're all thanks to this great show!
I remember that was the second last show that aired on Nickolodean for the day. The other show was "Vic's Vacant Lot", then after that, it would change into the A&E Channel.
This was hands down my fave show as a kid. I would be up at 6am to watch this. I especially loved any episodes that involved fire (yes I was a pyro as a kid) :D Don Herbert ROCKS! I would buy the DVD's if they weren't so damn expensive.
Wake up. Bowl of Cookie Crisp, glass of Tang anda poptart while watching Mr.Wizard. After that, play with G.I. Joes and NES, contra, mario 2, legend of zelda gold cartridge, excitebike, dragon warrior)my top 5. Life was much simpler then.

Mr. Wizard was SO cool! I remember he actually did some experiments with gunpowder and gasoline! (not together of course!) They were edited out and replaced with less dangerous experiments.

I wonder why he never discussed or explained Einstein's theory of general relativity on the program?

A class act Don "Mr. Wizard" Herbert was.
He took the time with youngsters to
express his knowledge and good-
natured relationships with them.
May he rest in peace.

I always remember as a kid I liked the intro and they would always do cool experiments.

I agree! They leave nothing but garbage now for nieces and nephews to watch.

I watched Mr. Wizard when I was in high school during the 80's. During the 70's when I was in elementary I watched Science is searching, Science is everywhere, and Science is discovery on PBS. All three of those shows had the same narrator but I don't know his name. Is it possible to get a link to those old shows?

I used to love this show!
This is what kids TV used to be. Now, it's all mindless garbage.

See, these are the useless facts that I've come to love, and they're all thanks to this great show!
any child of the 80's will remember this!
Well, I was born in 1985 and remember seeing reruns of Mr. Wizard in the early-to-mid-1990s.

Yeah, same here. They were usually on at 6:00AM on Nickolodean. Channel 47 for me :-)) Well thats what it use to be :-(
WakingMrHyde 3 years ago
I remember that was the second last show that aired on Nickolodean for the day. The other show was "Vic's Vacant Lot", then after that, it would change into the A&E Channel.

This was hands down my fave show as a kid. I would be up at 6am to watch this. I especially loved any episodes that involved fire (yes I was a pyro as a kid) :D Don Herbert ROCKS! I would buy the DVD's if they weren't so damn expensive.
