  • YOU WANT TOAST? YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TOAST!

  • I won't respond to one individual. 4 my sake, sake of this Country, the planet that most commenting have not seen the movie. This is one of the great scenes in American Cinema. The Diner, the waitress, the customer..(Jack Nicholson) It is all symbolism to make a point.

It isn't about the "Toast" understanding the character it is about Rigidness of Society, the Establishment, free spirit individualism is not welcome. Also keep in mind this was made in 1970. Of course a Diner would have....

  • @waveslider11

Of course the waitress was not accomadating to make a point...the Menu was telling how you must, live, behave, what to accept...ordering off the menu is not allowed, no individualism. I see comments about song lyrics, Movie sene's...so much fly's over everyones heads, it's as if the ability to reason, think, examine is gone!

  • Hey honey: why don't you read the meal and be surprised for the trust of the proprietor. This the 21st century.

  • @renfieldvonklauss really...? Do you honestly believe this to be true? Have you really thought this through? Take a moment and think about how a customer could be wrong. I would wager a generous sum that, once you begin, you will find it difficult to stop. Don't be a puppet for the service industry. Think for yourself.

  • what is the point of this scene?

  • What's "toast?"

  • Comment removed

  • This is not intellectual, have no symbolism, and he's not being a rebel. He's being a douchebag.

  • This scene is contrived. It is unjustly famous. Of course, it's Nicholson. He is great looking here, and he is just coming into his own as an actor. But the character is abusing a middle aged woman who has a very tough job, so the sympathy of the viewer is with her. Plus of which, as SpeCula points out above, have you ever walked into a diner what couldn't give you a side order of toast.

  • @mwoldin he didn't do anything wrong. like he said, he'd pay for the bread for the price of a sandwich, and made it as simple as possible for the lady. i don't sympathize with her. sure her jobs hard, but jack wasn't being difficult

  • @mwoldin Your full of shit. The waitress started it by giving him attitude. What kind of waitress takes orders with a scowl on her face? He had every right to treat her with the same amount of courtesy. Treat others the way they treat you thats what I say. And every job is tough. But it doesn't give you the right to act like a bitch to everyone.

  • As she said, she didn't make the rules. He was so close...but he chose to insult her...the customer is not always right. The server should have the ability t to be able to do her job within the confines the management sets for her without insults, bullying, or sarcasm from the patrons. For god's sake she's a human being, doing a tough, exhausting job. So he couldn't get exactly what he wanted. Big deal. No one does and I'm sure as hell she didn't get what she wanted either.

  • @FionaRestless Dude, calm down. Its a film.

  • @TheYTtelescope Sorry..been working in customer service too long, stuck between a rock(the boss) and a hard place(the patrons) for way too many years, slowly being ground to a fine powder.

  • I LOVE JACK NICHOLSON.

  • Francis from The Departed came back and burnt that whole fucking place to the dirt.

  • This scene could have 'played straight' and gone into oblivion. The script is not exception, Nicholson makes it legendary thru sheer talent. Genius.

  • I just watched the deleted scenes on the "About Schmidt" DVD. The last one was an homage to this scene, Jack orders a plain omelet, no potatoes, tomatoes instead, etc. The waitress says, "No substitutions." Jack's meek character shrugs and says, "OK, I'll have the potatoes then." And...scene!

  • @spamforbobby That's wonderful - how could they delete that?

  • batman, nurse ratchett, this diner lady, adam sandler, grissom, comishener gorden, miss torrence, her phsycic son,the witches of eastwick, the marsians all disliked this video

  • Which city and what state and what restaurant is it?

  • This scene was shot a the Denny's restaurant, just off I-5, near Eugene, Oregon. The place is still there and you can get toast anytime you want. I go there just to harass the wait staff and tell them to "hold it between your knees". Most of them have no idea what I'm talking about.

  • @cyclepsychodotcom omg that's so funny. haha.

  • the waitress mustve had a bad day and she made it worse..

  • but I didn't get it, did I.......

  • ...apart from this, it's a pretty good movie...

  • Bourgeois self entitlement disguised as anti establishment rebellion....he wasn't "sticking it to the man" he was berating a middle aged diner waitress...way to go, spartacus!

  • @abcbatman1966 fuck a menu, I worked in diners, we catered to EVERYONE, even the most absurd requests. so shove it with your analysis. I laughed hard. fuck that witchy old bitch

  • 00:10 That's Toni Basil (Oh Mickey) on the right (short brown hair). :)

  • I've never had the guts to say that to a waitress, but it's one thing I want to do before I die. Of course, that will probably be the day that I do die, so I better do all the other things on my bucket list first.

  • This extremely beautiful waitress should have held the chicken between her knees.

  • I'm guessing this waitress didn't get many tips.

  • Only Jack Nicholson can make ordering toast interesting.

  • Chick sal san.

  • Can Jack Nicholsen ever play a role where he isnt crazy in a way?

  • @Thedarkconsumer What for? That's what he's good at... He's normal in Terms of Endearment and he won his second Oscar for it...

  • A scene just slightly better than Meg Ryan's diner scene in When Harry Met Sally. In both scenes, the waitresses are key.

  • I would have just punched her out. This scene brings back some real memories of the old El Rancho. Now, let's have the Sally Struthers scene. You know, bouncing off the walls?

  • Ahh yes ..... Rebels .. No one is ever as honest as that ... We just get along and give in

  • @renfieldvonklauss my ass lol

  • This is an awesome scene, Jack Nicholson's character exercises the grubby and inflexible nature of waiters and restaurant service.

  • @AGuyInAHat no, in this scene Jack Nicholsons "character" displays his insensitivity, entitlement and his total lack of empathy for the working class. However back then most people (movie viewers) would have thought this scene to be the ultimate in hippy, intilectual verbal come-backs, completely disregarding the fact that this poor older woman is just doing what she is told to hold on to her job....and at her age noboy would be beating her door down to hire her should she lose her job over this

  • @inkey2 Well we all have our different opinions.

  • @AGuyInAHat and some have their democratic right to be wrong.

  • @mbabcock111 I can't even remember what I typed down! I'm sure that it was something completely biased and stupid. But you have a point there.

  • Comment removed

  • That waitress is a huge cunt.

  • @KleWdSide spoken like someone who special orders too much

  • @koolyrock Not at all. The only "special" I request is no mayo on my burger. But that waitress was definitely a bitch

  • @koolyrock Yeah. I've been out with a few people like that. Pain in the ass.

  • Ever sinc'70'e this movie came out, in '70, you can now order toast on the side.

  • hahahaha i love him

  • "Hey mannnn...-"

    "SHUT UP."

    ^ Classic Jack.

  • What kind of bullshit diner can't give you a side order of toast?

  • @SpeCulaTionS101 I think the waitress was just having a crappy day ... lol "... Hold it between you knees ..."

  • @SpeCulaTionS101 Happened to me at waffle house once.

  • @puppetmaster983: That's fucking awful. Any diner that doesn't serve toast as a side order should be out of business. Period.

  • @SpeCulaTionS101 the anti toast diner.

  • @SpeCulaTionS101 The imaginary kind in a movie.

  • Hold it between your knees... BaaaaHaaaHaaaHaaahaa

  • what.........a........bitch!

  • xD yes I remember that. I forgot all about it. I saw the movie once years ago. That was probably by far the best scene in the film. Was that the movie where he got out of the car in the freeway and jumped on the back of a pickup truck that was carrying a Piano?

  • lebarosky...he IS violent in this scene. It IS consistent, though, with the character. Later, he behaves in very much the same manner with Catherine...in the scene where she asks him to play the piano for her. His aim is to humiliate THERE as well. Like many films of that era, the filmmakers were totally unafraid to have their lead characters, quite often, be total a-holes.

Nicholson's character doesn't like himself very much at all...so he takes it out on others. Brilliant film IMO.

  • He really wants that freakin' toast.

  • Hehe - a classic scene.

This movie was ok (imo), its more for the intellectual crowd (imo). If you want to check out another good film by Jack (from earlier in his career), check out "The Last Detail" (1973).

  • @mwhite36 Or go even earlier with Easy Rider ('69) ;)

  • @Novelboy2112 Oh yeah, thats a good one, too!

Jack Nicholson has a very good body of work.

  • @renfieldvonklauss Especially if it's Jack Nicholson who wants a side order of wheat toast...

  • Whoa. Uh, does anyone get the point of this scene? Besides the fact that it is hilarious, it is a little dig at intellectuals. The fellow can't just let the poor pathetic working class waitress earn her $.75 cent tip. No, he's gotta prove how very clever and verbal he is. Not to mention violent. The waitress is wrong, and dumb. We knew that as soon as she opened that slash of a mouth. He finally got the point when they got on the road: he didn't get his toast! Heh.

  • I love this scene.....and there are ' franchises" who do act this way..even today. NIcholson is great !!!

  • What a great scene.

  • This is unequivocally one of the greatest scenes in American cinema. It is also without a doubt the ONLY good scene in an otherwise dreadful movie.

  • @Atzil If this is unequivocally one of the greatest scenes in American cinema then the bar has been set so low you could crawl over it... Are you serious or high?

  • What I love is that he's being polite, and completely reasonable with this waitress and she's getting snippy at him.

  • I can't believe that a diner in 1970 wouldn't have a side order of toast. The point of the scene is supposed to be symbolic of a different mentality.

  • 1:36 Notice how Toni Basil and the other girl anticipated and moved back *before* Jack swiped the drinks off the table. Karen Black did not.

  • @JP5466 Probably because she was hopped up on goof balls.

  • @JP5466 Was that toni basil ??? the same tony basil that sang "hey mickey" in the 80,s and was in easy rider ?? i didnt realise it was her.

  • @tonymontana1974 Yep... that's her.

  • @tonymontana1974 yes it was, and she also played a hooker in Easy Rider, ironically co starring Jack Nicholson.

  • @fumetti that's just coincidence. not ironic.

  • @fumetti ironic would be if Nicholson played a hooker in five easy pieces.

  • i would have just punched her up...

  • Gerlach, Bruno;s town, walked into the cafe, the man who set the worlds land speed record out at Black Rock Desert was sitting there, she said that will be $2.75 for coffee to go, told her to pour it out. She said: I do not make the prices! Went to Empire, Nevada right down the road, about 59 cents, lady who lives here said the man who bought the store ripped them off bigtime, ruined their finances. Good people all around, liars and theives abound.

  • Ah, the difference between being a rebel ass-hat, fucking things up out of pure spite and being a righteous rebel, when appropriate reaction is warranted.

  • @AlmostWithYou94 I think her name is Helen Kallianotes

  • Lorna Thayer plays the waitress. She passed away at the Motion Picture Fund in Woodland Hills, CA in 2005. A great actress.

  • - puts shades on

    " you see this sign ! "

there's only one Jack in Hollywood

  • how hard is it to make toast i understand jacks frustration

  • Classic Jack - I love it

  • Now just hold the chicken

  • Wow, I thought that Easy Rider in 69' was good.

This is just as funny, and right too.

    Jack Nicholson, Quite and actor.

  • i would have just punch her out

  • great quality

  • sooooooo funny!

  • Super Classic Scene!

  • @Juanpb1983 "We have the right to refuse service to anyone"

  • You want me to hold hold the chicken ??? i want you to hold it between your knees

  • the idiocy of petty rules man, its like, well, if you can't get it - you must be some kind of weirdo

  • ok. will someone please explain this to me what is the symbolic purpose of this scene?

  • @bdwriley "Symbolic purpose" ? I think there are several important ones in this scene. One of them is that he likes toast. The toast is the most symbolic one. The chicken is also symbolic, and of course the waitress is very symbolic, especially her knees. The waitress being told to hold the chicken between her knees has enormous sexual symbolism, though the chicken probably knows much more about this than I do.

  • @bdwriley: There is essentially no symbolism of any sort whatsoever at all in this scene. That is one of the best things about it. "See THIS sign?" Note his "sign" was not a "sign" of any sort; it was an action. See? No symbolism.

  • @ERaddock then why do people make such a huge deal out of this scene?

  • @bdwriley I once read that it was the loss of individualism in the face of authoritarian control and a warning against non-conformity ---- Dupea didn't get his toast, or anything else to eat. I myself think that the scene is famous because although I find his behavour arrogant and childish, people do admire his rebelliousness and the humorous bit about holding the chicken between her knees.

  • @lewars1912

He's not being childish one bit.

  • @bdwriley: It sounds like you think a scene has to have heavily symbolism in order for people to make a big deal out of it. In this instance, it seems it is the precise lack of symbolism that is so refreshing and effective.

  • what movie is this from?

  • @magicalpoop Five Easy Pieces 1970-this is a famous scene by jack--excellent movie by nicholson post kennedy era...

  • The short hair girl at :11 is Toni Basil, who later did the 80s song "Mickey" (your so fine)

  • the waitress adds a lot the scene; she was great

  • Comment removed

  • @OSInvader "Dare I call ihm "one of the greats?" Uhhh yeah you can call him that... considering he won more best actor awards in the Oscars than ANYONE

  • @speedy1388 not sure that's true. but he has won the equal most overall acting awards (leading+supporting) - 3, tied with walter brennan

  • I'll take an order of disco fries

  • That waitress was a total cunt. LOL

  • not a great movie but this scene is a great one. jack had star power.

  • When she says "No substitutions," you KNOW some shit's gonna go down.

  • This was on Turner Classic Movies last night (regular-ass cable TV), and I was very shocked (pleasantly) to see it completely unedited. You could see little Sally Struthers' boobies WITH nipples! Very hot!

  • @jjp009 Holy Shit! I saw it too. I DVRd it. Sally Struthers was a little chunky, but cute.

  • @Spartacus217 Oh, the chunkiness is very beautiful on her...she carried it very well...super hot! Today...uhhh, not so much.

  • @jjp009 She was billed by her full name--Sally Ann Struthers.

  • I saw “Five Easy Pieces” for the first time last night and, boy, was I disappointed. I felt letdown by a rather uneven structure, uninteresting characters (especially the main one), and all around blandness. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but the film seemed to be missing something as well. I did, however, find this scene memorable.

  • @Beale64 Yeah, this was before the days of CGI and there were no violent car chase scenes, so I can imagine how this might be uninteresting to young people today. Justin Bieber also wasn't in it, so...there's that, too.

  • @jjp009 For your information, jjp009, my favorite cinematic decade happens to be the 1970’s, and I’m not a fan of Michael Bay-esk films (all style, no/very little substance). Just because I’m 24 years old and dislike “Five Easy Pieces” doesn’t mean I have poor taste in film, and it’s dumb of you to think that.

  • @jjp009 I'm 19 and wouldn't touch Never Say Never with a 39 and a half foot pole.

  • "Cottage fries and rolls" are not exactly tomatoes. This is playing like a Curb Your Enthusiasm of its time.

Thank you for posting, and for including the playout edit. Other posters were attempting to cut the scene right at the real end, but it looked like something was missing. And thanks for the high def too.

  • A silent Karen Black. :)

  • That chick who played the hitchhiker who wouldn't shut up was awesome, too. Looks familiar, somehow.

  • That was customer service back in the day!

  • Is the sex scene from this movie online anywhere?

  • Does anyone know what the sign says??

  • what movie is this? thx

  • @ForgottenAlleyArts It's called Five Easy Pieces.

  • man i gotta start watching old movies.. blockbuster is going out of business for a reason. the have NO fucking movies anymore....

  • @detroitMC313 actually its mostly due to netflix & torrent sites

  • Not the best scene, it was : "I faked some Chopin, you faked a few tears"

  • Comment removed

  • What a beast of a scene...

  • I just ate at this place (it's a Denny's) in Eugene, OR. Never realized this scene was filmed there.

  • Claro,el pobre qué iba a hacer..Le estaba provocando la dependienta borde.

  • Jack Nickleson is... the clint Eastwood of diners... ( funny stuff )

  • what a dumb bitch

  • Jessica Lange???

  • Such a great scene, but I wish the following scene didn't exist. I wish they didnt feel the need to point to the greatness of the writing..we got it, we don't need another character to spell out what he did.

  • @jazz4 yea you got a point should of just ended it there

  • @jazz4 I agree with you. Although I loved to see Helena Kallioniotes (unfortunate supporting star, who was a good actress, as shw showed in Kansas City Bombers), and hear her say, "I would have punched her."

  • I don't know why Jack always get to work with ugly women.....Duvall, Bates, and that mutated brunette on the back seat.

  • @MrGakn you mean Toni Basil?that old witch!watch her,she's stil dangerous

  • @MrGakn Jessica Lange was hot.

  • i read the obituary for the actress who played the waitress (Lorna Thayer). She was really pleased at how the scene developed a life of it's own and happy that it was the scene she was best known for (she was a supporting character in many movies previously). She channeled every bitch waitress she ever met into one character. So I guess Jack wasn't the only good actor in that scene.

  • This was filmed at my local Denny's in Eugene, OR. If you mention this fact to the employees they just give you a blank stare. It has been 35 years, though.

  • @aulduron do you mean they give you a blank stare as a gag or because they don't know about the scene?

  • @aulduron I went there one time. It was one of the first times I got something out of a crane machine. I also drank a fucking kick ass milk shake. God I love milk shakes.

  • @aulduron Are you serious?

  • @aulduron how sad!

  • @aulduron are the people who work at dennys in oregan still white? there all mexican in california

  • what movie is this ???

  • @spwf2 Dinr

  • I dont get it.. usually i get induendos and stuff but i dont get this one

can someone tell me what it means?

"You want me to hold the chicken huh?"

"I want you to hold it between your knees"?

is it a dirty joke or somthing?

  • @MrAxemana When Jack Nicholson asked her to "hold the chicken", she knew exactly what he meant, but she said, "You want me to hold the chicken, huh?". When he answered , "I want you to hold it between your knees", he was being sarcastic.

I didnt get it either, until I watched it the second time.

  • @kfkrobok wow, *he was being sarcastic", you got it! Took you a while though, huh?

  • That diner waitress has a face that is so flinty and hard, you could strike matches on it....Yeah what are wrinkles anyway....just the dried up beds of old smiles !

  • "you want me to hold the chicken huh?" "I want you to hold it between your knees"

  • One of the greatest scenes of all time

  • ww.liveleak.com/view?i=91d_1290067421

Here's Jack's son complaining in real life lol!

  • i just ate at this exact same denny's today. it's on I-5 just south of eugene.

  • @oregonflatland

OMG, thank you for pointing out the location. I used to stop there all the time on drives between WA and CA. Can't believe I never recognized it before...

  • @localnebula

yeah i've sat in that exact same booth. the diner basically looks exactly the same except for some modern decor. i ordered a side of white toast no complaints. jack must have a thing for oregon with the shining and one flew over the cuckoos nest filmed here.

  • @oregonflatland Does the Denny's still look that cool. Too many Diners were messed with in the 80's or just torn down-like the Googie coffee shop in LA. Sad because they are lovely examples of American architecture.

  • @midmodgal

it looks the same on the outside and the booths are still in the same place but they've been replaced with more modern furniture. the big red blocks overhead don't have the weird design on them and everything's been painted. but basically it still looks the same. the waitress might still be there :D
