hey man how would u get ur ship to set into the diorama? cut it out and then do the waves? this makes me want to buy a good ship model and make a diorama. never made one but thanks for the video. btw never stop ur work u are a genius
@zuse121 it really depends on the model, if you have a nice model ship, it may come with a "Waterline Base" which instead of a shaped lower hull, it is just flat so that you can mount them easier. But most ships come with the bottom hull fully intact. My HMS Hood came intact and I had to make a very deep base for it. I just filled around the hull with cardboard untill I got the waterline where I wanted and just did a really good job connecting the pieces together.
@Akademee thanks very much man. i just have one more question. would u be willing to make a tutorial of how to fit the ship and then make the diorama. very much appreciated
@182jcpt I always thought that sea foam was a bit on the matte side. but if you really want to preserve the shine, you can get some acylic gloss artist's medium or floor wax to "re-shine" the surface
This is an awesome way to make water for a dio. Awesome because it looks real, looks easy to make and is inexpensive! I've been looking at Woodland's stuff and Scalerama's water effects, but will definitely use this method first! I wonder if the silicone can also be used for splashing water and water columns, used on pieces of a PET bottle?
@incomscustoms It most definitely can, like I have said in an earlier comment, the original use of this method was for a supersonic-flying Gundam model over water, so you had major splash and water columns from that, can clear PET is the way to go to build effects up like that.
@Rdeboer It is in m y experience that the hull of a ship very rarely looks "wet" But clear silicone already cures into a glossy finish. For sea spray, I would think you'd have better luck bulking up the silicone at the waterline and drybrush heavily.
@AdamSavage88 oh you mean caulk.. the white stuff that you put in corners and stuff that stays white.. no.. silicon is rubbery sort of like caulk but clear...
Great vid really helpful

great vid brilliant how you can get a realistic effect for such a low price.
one thing you might want to try is after the dry brushing put one more coat of silicone to regain that gloss look.
once again great vid!!

This seems to be the easiest method, very realistic and effective; thank you for posting.
Any thoughts on using gloss varnish around the hull waterline and forward deck to represent wetness and sea-spray?
