Ur a dick head that number ur reading is the strength the higher the number lower ur signal and the lower the stronger, thats why when it said 87 or something the signal went up high,

then when it was 103 or whatever u had one bar of signal

The changing figure is signal level Rx in dBm from the current selected Base Station...other info displayed would be Channel number, Timeslot, Hopping Freqs, other available Channels and Basestations etc.

It IS NOT sending positional information 'GPS-style'. This is way too complex for a txt reply but it is definitely not how the phone might be physically tracked....that is (basically) done by triangulating with all the all the stations recieving the phone signal....... Geddit??!

Cont.. I know this because I worked for AT&T Wireless for a number of years and was good friends with one of the RF Engineers. He clued me in what all those numbers mean.

You got everything right except the number in the left hand corner of the screen. They don't show your position like you said, rather they show an accurate depiction of signal strength. They are measured in DB's and the higher number you have means more signal is being received.

Yup, youre right. It can also be done on a Nokia 3310 (and prolly several other nokia phones). The only useful things i could find between those numbers were the reception (mwa, usefull.. i knew what it meant) and the temperature.
