  • was about to skip ad when I noticed it was Interpol's song Lights playing. So I watched the 7ish minute long ad. It was an interview. Ads gone right.

  • BAH! Back in 2001 I HATED Kid A and Amnesiac and I especially hated Pyramid Song. i would try to listen to those albums but turn them off in disappointment and listen to OK Computer. Then around the time Hail to the Thief came out, I can't really describe it, but somehow I found myself really getting into those two albums and adoring Pyramid Song. Here it is 2011, ten years later, and I would give my left testicle to go back in time and attend this show.

  • @WickedLiquid Real good music is challenging. I myself found music which I continue to like 10 to 20 years on, I didn't initially like. This being one of those songs.

  • These could have been real lazy and done all this with synthesizers like Depeche Mode, but they learn every instrument they play. Pretty impressive

  • Radiohead is probably the only rock band to use a piano, upright bass, and ondes martenot in the same song.

  • I like to think of it as 4/4 with a swing feel (like bdrums94). 4 bars (16 beats as Mondluchs noted) per phrase. Listen to Phil's ride cymbal, it's hitting 1/4 notes. And I think of the piano rhythm as clusters of 5 that are 1 1/2 beats (1/4 notes) apart with 2 full beats (1/4 notes) separating the clusters. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th chords are on the beat and the 2nd and 3rd are on the "ands". The phrase starts on the third piano chord in the cluster.

  • @MrWebberman That is also where the song begins, the bass and drums come in, and the chord progression changes occur. Hope my interpretation wasn't too confusing.

  • @MrWebberman I've learned how to play this song on piano and still don't really understand the rhythm. You really just have to play what sounds right because it's way too hard to try to understand.

    Still, this is the hardest fucking rythm I have ever tried to reproduce. So many variations and shifts. A catastrophe to remember.

  • @glipglop55 I can see where you're coming from, but to me this song is encouraging. It's about overcoming the fear of death. "Nothing to fear, nothing to hide." It's about total spiritual freedom. And, at least for me, it helps put things in perspective.

  • When I first heard this I couldn't even listen to it because of how deeply depressed I was at the time. All my friends were raving about Amnesiac and I knew it was good, but just couldn't bring myself to hear it....it was too intense. Years later I picked it up and was able to absorb it. I still think that this song sounds like the pure pain and confusion of being in the depths of depression.

  • @glipglop55 I had a somewhat similar experience to you on that front. I began listening to their music when I was in the depths of depression as well. It helped me to cope quite a bit. Amazing what music can do.

  • @glipglop55 hmmm well if you isolate the lyrics, theyre actually quite uplifting. and if you isolate the music, its also quite uplifting. but you're right. when put together with thom's heartfelt vocals, it does portray a desperate attempt to redeem yourself out of the deepest holes of depression. Radiohead's music has emotion and power and will last forever. Crappy live performance? Not at all. Any Radiohead fan who listens to this will see the emotion Thom goes through when he plays this song. Make sure you actually know what you are talking about next time.

  • @mukkohaha Yeah, the live performances of this song never really did this song justice. Thom's vocals don't have as much of an impact. I think if he worked on them and Jonny/Ed could replicate the entire string arrangement live, it'd be amazing.

  • @jonnycwilson Got that right! All my friends are "kind" of afraid of him. They find it very depressing and weird. Which is kinda true. I don't know why, but right after I heard it for the first time, I just couldn't stop. And pyramid song is, for me, the true definition of what Radiohead is all about. Glad to find someone who shares my opinion

  • still today Kid A and Amnesiac are THE "very best" of radiohead..it is so multydimensional with sooo many layers..probably 99% of other bends would create 10 albums from Kid A and Amnesiac...they really gave us "all"...no limits or boundaries...10 years after i still can find "new" sounds...and really..what other bend can suprise You after You had listen albums for God knows how many times?
