As a hobby I fart around with electronics. I made one out of a $4 Fuji camera and the little stinker only worked twice before overheating and self destructing. But as far as being called a "stun gun" it does below average in that area. It is more like an advanced version of the electric pen or joy buzzer. But be careful playing with large voltage capacitors there are some rare cases that can kill a person.
I done the same thing when I was a kid, but I removed the 330 volt capacitor. Soldered wires to the circuit board and attached alligator clips to the opposite end of the wires. So that I could charge the capacitor. After charging the capacitor I would say "here catch" and throw it to an unsuspecting classmate shocking their hand when they caught it. Needless to say I made a few people mad. I didn't get into much trouble, much less charged with a crime. Over kill in my opinion.

As for the stun gun, a flash capacitor is not like a stun gun that is usually limited to about 2 ma. A flash capacitor can probably discharge at a ridiculously lethal current.

I just checked this out and was surprised over the danger of this. I measured the capacitor holding to voltage to 2kV (2000V). The thing is that there's pretty big current flowing when you touch the flash wires. With a bad heart this could kill you.

As for the stun gun, a flash capacitor is not like a stun gun that is usually limited to about 2 ma. A flash capacitor can probably discharge at a ridiculously lethal current.

Putting aside the fact that both of you comment are contradictory, you're still wrong. The values are high for DC current because the heart is less affected by it. For AC it would take as little has 100ma for the average person. Also voltage has almost nothing to do with it other than being of function of the skin's resistance at the time. That's why they use conductive gel on defibs. Otherwise, it would take thousands of volts for defibs to work.

These cameras use capacitors to produce a very short lived but powerful charge. I've accidentally shocked my self with one before and it hurts alot. Some people with heart problems could die from that. In my opinion he should have had been given a warning from police, I think expelling him and charging him with a crime is way too over the top.

I just checked this out and was surprised over the danger of this. I measured the capacitor holding to voltage to 2kV (2000V). The thing is that there's pretty big current flowing when you touch the flash wires. With a bad heart this could kill you.

i worked at cvs photo lab and we used to do this stuff all the time with the disposable cameras , i even did it to one of the cops that used to et his pictures developed there ! granted he was pretty cool about it and he had said that it wasnt shit !!! they know what a real one feels like ,,, anyway the capasitor for the flash in no way comes close to the real thing , but it can melt a knife or fork but ,,, just a bit and it wont transfer to your hand when you do it ... trust me i know
