Just because its a movie doesnt mean it has to be totally over the top. Van Helsing presented a lush gothic era environment when many inuendos and effects from classic monster films, but the dynamic camera angles, needless CGI, and what have you is just there to make it "cool". The movie is a good attempt, but when they tried to make it special, it feel into a lot of cliches. I myself see more and more of them in "action" flicks nowadays.
