This guy is one of the best dnb drummers!!!totally respect him... and it seems like he always steps up his game and is constantly improving!!! nothing but respect for this guy!!!
It's not like he can't play in other time signatures or jam out some nasty triplets, etc etc, it's just that he is a drum n bass drummer and that's how he identifies himself.
I searched for him expecting nasty live drum n bass beats, and he provided. I'd be irritated if I had to wade through videos of him jamming out some retarded 7/4 progrock beat before I could find the shit that he is known for.
If you're not impressed by this guy, you don't like drum n bass. Different strokes.
I absolutely agree with you man. I had never heard of this guy before so I wasn't able to fully appreciate where he was coming from, if you know what I mean. Sometimes you need to be exposed to material a few times before you "get it". He is pretty amazing, a regular human drum machine.

Honestly I think this guy is very good, he sounds as steady and consistent as a machine. But when you look at the big picture this is musically a narrow segment of skill.
1. Every note he plays is evenly divisible, no tripelets, or five-lets, or sevenlets.
2. The only meters I've heard him play in are 2/4 or 4/4
3. NO DYNAMICS!
4. No tempo changes accelerandos or retards.
And if you have no idea what I'm talking about then it's no wonder your so impressed with KJ Sawka.
Why would you think I don't know what I'm talking about. Just because I have no idea what dnb is, well if that's the case then you're right I have no idea. But I do know about music and I know that this guy isn't bad but the shit he's playing here is nothing, this is high school level playing my friend and if you don't think so, oh well because I know so my friend.
I would be willing to bet that KJ is packing shows in seattle as we speak, i would know I saw one two months ago, standing room only, and everyone was fucking MASSIVE together. you would have to see a live set to understand the dynamics he presents, you cant just watch a 2 minute clip and understand the context from which that clip is taken from. I've heard he played a four hour plus set. do you know drummers that endure that? prolly-not.
dude....its dnb...its not supposed to be fucking complex as shit, off time, or any of that. im a drummer, i've been a drummer for 9 years now, touring and in studio. just because a man makes his living and lives his dream playing a genre of music the way its supposed to be played..doesn't meen that he's oblivious to all other musical ideas.
Not sure why everyone's throwing so many thumbs-down on this guy. What, is work ethic a sin now-a-days? thebetterhalf is right. with enough (correct) practice technique, you can master anything. "there's more to it than that!" yeah. hence "Correct Practice Technique"
As a drummer I have to tell you that it's actually easier than it seems. These are great sounding beats and this guy is very good but really difficult? No
As I drummer myself too, it's easy to execute these things, but to make a good feel, and play comfortably, that's quite hard. For example, it's almost impossible to reach Jojo's level, altough one can learn those things. The true musicianship is to get a good idea, and work that out.
When I was in grade school and taking private lessons I went through a drum book called 'The Rock and roll Cookbook" it was full of the exact beats that this guy is playing and then some. It was designed to help you learn every permutation if this type of beat so that you could free yourself from any physical limitation and be able to freely express the ideas that popped into your head. And it's exactly like thebetterhalf37 said it's practice and gigin that make you tight.
This guy kicks ass. The track is named "Globalize This" and can be found on his new album "Cyclonic Steel" released in 2007. It's a dual disc with DVD material on one side! Check out his website for more info.
Hi, is this drum played by a person? so it is like berg sans niple. Well i also created drum n bass music. I´m 21, just a rookie. 1/3 chill out 2/3 a fusion of chill out and drum n bass and 3/3 fusion of funky, jungle and drum n bass, are my 3 first works. I would like the opinion of people used to this kind of music. And also know if you would call chill out, dnb or whatever, each of 3.
i saw sawka in toronto live. these videos do NOT do him justice.... not one bit. his drumming is so tight, plus he controls all the audio at the same time. quit talkin shit on youtube and go see this guy live before talkin shit
thats awesome! he's definately one of my favorite musicians these days. when he came through colorado recently, i reeeeeaaaaaaallly wanted to see him... but couldnt make it out there. :(
