The memory card says PS/PS2 because every playstation is loaded with the same software. It's meant for the backwards comparable playstation. And it doesn't take a genius to figure that out, or that there's a different Blu ray drive that makes a playstation backwards compatible.
Did you try the add on ps2 system data in the ps store. That's what other vids are showing to do. I don't know what gb they have but they show it as a slim and they show it working. Why? IDK. The reason why this is removed on the newer models is because Sony paid 400-500 dollars on the PS3 60gb and 20gb models with Ps2 bc. However on the 80gb 4usb ports, the console has ps2 compatibility. It has software emulation. This is because sony wants to have ps2 compatibility with ps2 games, it just is to save money by removing the chip in the 60gb model. It does not get as hot as the 60gb model. It plays 80% of ps2 games. Thats still good.

I was talking to the head office of EB Games and was complaining about it not playing ps2. The guy I was speaking to said that Sony is currently making an usb adapter that when plugged into your ps3 will let you play ps2 games. However he doesn't know when it will be released. He also said they removed the backwards compatibility because the parts were costing Sony too much.!!

@smellycathome You need to look for the serial number ending in CECHXXX after the dash (the three Xs correspond to the last letter and two numbers at the end example: CECHL01). Better yet just check and see how many USB ports you have on the front of your PS3, If you only have two you have a newer model which are not compatible with PS2 games, if you have four you have an older model which are backwards compatible with PS2. I hope this helped. :)

For the author of this video. You are half way correct. The first 60 Gig Model had the actual PS2 hardware alongside the PS3 hardware. Thus the very high price tag. The Following model "80 gig" dropped the hardware but instead has a very poor emulation layer for the PS2. So "some" PS2 games will play on it. PS3 up to the current Slim models can emulate a PS2 completely but SONY will not do this until PS2 sales drop which after 10 years, sales are still high.

@boomertwi All you have to do to find out the hard disk size is go to Settings > System Settings > System Information, along with the system software version, IP address and MAC address you will also see free space. The number to the right of the slash will give you a rough estimate of your PS3s' hard disk capacity (example: mine is 50 GB / 74 GB, so I know that my PS3 has an 80 GB hard disk.) I hope this helps.

@michael101618 You must have the one with the serial number that ends in "CECHLxx" (the "xx' are the two numbers at the end. The only 80 GB model that plays PS2 games is the one with the serial that ends in "CECHExx".

@virgelxXx I agree with you. Problem is that Sony decided it was too costly to make them backwards comp because the PS2 games are still their best sellers. Best bet is to do what I did and buy a back/comp version on Ebay....I got the 60gb and mine plays all versions. If you buy the new Slim, it won't work.
@virgelxXx Good theory...problem is that the back/comp doesn't actually have anything to do with the hard drive. The emotion engine chip that allows PS2 gameplay was removed to cut costs and Sony decided to just make the Slim able to play PS1 and PS3 games. The H/D size won't matter...just be sure that you get a back/comp PS3 (1st Gen). They come in 20, 60 and 80 but I recommend the 60 GB because the 80 has been reported to have problems with PS2 playback.
The minimal hardware required 2 play PS2 games on a PS3 is the PS2 Graphic Synthosiser (GS) GPU chip. The Emotion Engine (EE) CPU chip can either also be in the PS3 system (which would get PS2 compatibility 2 around 99%) or it can b emulated using the PS3's CPU (which lowers PS2 compatibility but not that much). PAL 60GB and CECHE 80GB PS3's emulate the PS2's CPU

@boomertwi All you have to do to find out the hard disk size is go to Settings > System Settings > System Information, along with the system software version, IP address and MAC address you will also see free space. The number to the right of the slash will give you a rough estimate of your PS3s' hard disk capacity (example: mine is 50 GB / 74 GB, so I know that my PS3 has an 80 GB hard disk.) I hope this helps.

I don't feel like reading comments for one similiar to mine, but when we bought the new 120GB PS3 slim, the b!+ch at Gamestop told me that it WAS backwards compatible, so that's why we bought that instead of the 250GB. But when we got home, it wouldn't play my PS2 games. And I tried the system data(PS2), so did she just screw us or is there something wrong?

@michael101618 You must have the one with the serial number that ends in "CECHLxx" (the "xx' are the two numbers at the end. The only 80 GB model that plays PS2 games is the one with the serial that ends in "CECHExx".

Dude so far u r the only youtuber I've seen that actually knows about the ps3 backwards capability and the older ps3s backward capability. Ya gatta admit Sony is being a real bitch not selling ps3s with backward capability. They did before y not now. The older ps3s that played ps1 and ps2 games aren't on for sale anymore and mine fucking broke so it's fuckin shiity as hell.

@virgelxXx I agree with you. Problem is that Sony decided it was too costly to make them backwards comp because the PS2 games are still their best sellers. Best bet is to do what I did and buy a back/comp version on Ebay....I got the 60gb and mine plays all versions. If you buy the new Slim, it won't work.

@virgelxXx Good theory...problem is that the back/comp doesn't actually have anything to do with the hard drive. The emotion engine chip that allows PS2 gameplay was removed to cut costs and Sony decided to just make the Slim able to play PS1 and PS3 games. The H/D size won't matter...just be sure that you get a back/comp PS3 (1st Gen). They come in 20, 60 and 80 but I recommend the 60 GB because the 80 has been reported to have problems with PS2 playback.

The minimal hardware required 2 play PS2 games on a PS3 is the PS2 Graphic Synthosiser (GS) GPU chip. The Emotion Engine (EE) CPU chip can either also be in the PS3 system (which would get PS2 compatibility 2 around 99%) or it can b emulated using the PS3's CPU (which lowers PS2 compatibility but not that much). PAL 60GB and CECHE 80GB PS3's emulate the PS2's CPU

Very interesting point. Never noticed the PS2 Card bit in the menu and no backwards compatability. Honestly why does sony insist on doing things like this. I think my ps2 is just gathering dust and I want to get rid of it but won't do so until i find a way to play ps2 games on my 250gb ps3. Cool vid.
