Al's is a very gracious man..he's making the best out of a junky tune..his vocals and talents are far beyond this brain fried music. Mike was dead on about the Smile sessions..and Brian knows it as well.
@alexandertarangerkin Perhaps so...but none were so fried as 'Smile' in my opinion. The whole ' Smile' session is the very reason Brian Wilson is just a shadow of himself today. He himself said, the biggest regret he has was all the Acid he took during that time of 'Smile'. I don't see why anybody should be celebrating 'Smile'..there's nothing to smile about after seeing what it has done to a brilliant artist.
@musicmatty67 Thats an interesting view, but you cant argue that there were sum great songs on smile like Cabinessence, wonderful (and one of my personal favs) I love to say Dada
@ranmore30 There is music for everyone..so I'm not surprised that someone say's they love the Smile work. For me and I'm sure many others, Smile is a mirror of the Dark side that overtook Brian Wilson. Not much to smile about when one considers the Toll it took on him from all the Acid he took during those sessions...he has said this himself...his biggest regret he has stated. I'm very much looking forward to their reunion Album!
@musicmatty67 ...but the finished results that we finally get to hear are, in my opinion, one of the best albums ever recorded by anyone. And even Mike Love admits it.
@mabewa It depends what you like...but not for me...no way no how..to drug induced with that kind of mind set behind it. I'll take the pre 66 Wilson BBoys music any day...I'm sure their new upcoming CD will be heads above the Smile concept.
@musicmatty67 IMHO opinion, Pet Sounds and Smile (now that it is finally out) represented their peak. And there are a lot of reasons for Brian's breakdown (it may have been coming anyway, regardless of what he did), but a very big part of it was record company pressure. They really should have backed off and let him work his magic.
I've got to hand in my resume in at Ameoba and see if I can get hired there. Not only could I put my music knowledge and customer service skill to use, but I could experience things like this! I missed Al Jardine singing "Vegetables" at Ameoba for crying out loud!!!!
@spicegirlsfan472 Frank Holmes has said so himself (hes the guy who illustrated the Smile booklet) - it makes total sense - nothing more subversive than a hidden message - didn't you wonder what all the other sounds in the song were like fits of giggling (the demo version that I mentioned actually turns into all out *laughter*) - "I threw away my candy wrapper and I ate the wrapper" - do you see it now?
@hellomcflyy oops - that should be "I threw away the candy bar and I ate the wrapper" - now Im sounding like a pothead too - the demo version has really obvious lyrics like "stripped the stalk green" - its a real hoot...check it out...
of course....this song is really about pot....from what Ive gathered in various message board discussions....an earlier demo of this song has lyrics (the cornucopia version) that suggest this as well...
Uh.....
