I use some electrical tape to insulate the terminals otherwise you will jolted anytime you touch them. you can use silicone also. i dont like the clips. they take up to much space and wont allow the tubs to sit evenly
Everyone talks about careful the temps dont get to high but my temps wont get high enough. I have 3 strips of 3 inch flexwatt and they wont get hotter than 82.
hmm if your heat tape making a buzzing sound i would check all your connections it shouldnt make any noise. If all connections are good I would consider replacing with new heatape.
do you jus plug the heat tape into a thermostate and control the tapes temperature like that?, also is there more then one kind of thermostat and which one is best
It could be that you may not have good enough connections. 3" flex should get about 110 or so. You also could have overheated the flex when you soldered the connections. which is very easy to do. to much heat and the tape will seperate
ReptileBasics, when you order from them, do this for you. Something you may find helpful if you don't want to do it yourself. Other than that, great vid!
Hey. Thanks for the video. I just finished wiring up 7 shelves for my first rack, and watching your video helped it go very smoothly. I'm really glad I went with soldering, not the clamps. 5 stars!
It depends on the size of the heat tape. The 11 inch heat tape that is used in this video can only be cut every foot. Where as the 3 inch heat tape can be cut pretty much any length
what brand of thermostat do you use?

@TTYKL
I use herpstat, works great

how do you tell which wire is which? I have a white extension cord and it doesn't say what wire is what
LeopardGeckoFry 11 months ago
@LeopardGeckoFry
doesnt matter which wire you use. The heat tape doesnt care which side is positive or negative.

Yeah once you have the leads soldered you simply plug it into your thermostat. I use and recommend a Herpstat made by spyderrobotics they work great

will it still work if I cut the end off between the black lines and try again? I've soldered it like 4 times already....

@azgrem
yes it should be fine as long as you cut between the black heating elements
