  • I'm sorry about Skittles...what happened to her? I had two lorikreets fly out the door at the same time, one came home but poor Coco never came home. I miss her every day. She was such a character.

  • @Arcane7707 SKITTLES WAS DIAGNOISED WITH CARDIAC DISEASE WHICH CAUSED FLUID TO BUILD UP IN HER ABDOMEN. SHE HAD TO BE DRAINED EVERY 10 TO 14 DAYS AND EVENTUALLY GOING IN WEEKLY. THERE WAS COMPLICATIONS WHEN SHE WAS DRAINED THE LAST TIME WHICH MADE IT HARDER FOR HER TO BOUNCE BACK.

  • hi. so sorry to hear about skittles. i have followed him on youtube. i own a rainbow lorikeet named Bobby. i am curious to ask how you handle the cleaning of poo when he is loose in the house, also, what do you use in th bottom of your cage?

  • @kay6289 - When I had Skittles, I used the walnut litter in the bottom tray and I used plexiglass on the sides (except the front) of her cage. The plexiglass was a life saver for not only her poo, but when she splashed around in her bath bowl. Water still got on the floor, but not as bad. Skittles was only loose when I was home so I would get her to poo on command. If I forgot - she would poo & I would clean it up...no big deal.

  • they are a lovely bird and ironically my lorikeet is also called Skittles she is 4 months old I have just uploaded a couple of videos of her tormenting my cats

  • @mumandtwins Your Skittles is very young. How old was she when you got her? They do make wonderful pets - very smark & affectionate. My Skittles lived with six cats when she was alive, and she respected them and they respected her. You might want to really watch your Skittles closely. A cat can and will only take so much before striking. I would hate for something terrible to happen to her. She's a beautiful bird!

  • @luvkatz6 Skittles hatched in December 2010 and I got her a month ago, so even though she was an avery bird, she is easy enough to handle, I didn't realise the grow up so fast, and of course I have to watch my cats with her, they wouldn't hesitate to make a meal out of her.

  • @mumandtwins Has your Skittles started talking yet? Skittles learned to say her name when she was 8 months old....after that, she learned so many words and sentences. She even learned to call the cats and they would come. Needless to say, I would have to give them treats. :-) Yes, they grow up fast ~ You never know how long you'll have them.

  • @luvkatz6 no not yet, I am sure it will be soon though I have a cockatiel called Ash who is a very good talker I expect her to mimic him at some stage. I am in South Australia and these are a native bird on the East Coast on a recent trip to Sydney I fell in love with them, when the wild ones would also display friendliness towards humans. Like many parrots here they do live for a long time, like children

  • this made me cry cause as soon as i saw this video i just kept on thinking how sad it was because my 2 Olive rainbow Lorikeets were taken to the birdshop because we were moving states and my parents didnt want to pay the quarantine fees.

Reeno: 10 years old was very fun to play with but was quite the biter

Tony: 1 year old was also fun to play with but was quite the biter too.

They meant the world to me so fun to play with and very entertaining

  • @LiLNich12 I'm sorry you had to give up your two lorikeets. They are wonderful birds! Skittles wasn't really a biter. She was very affectionate. Wonder if it had to do with her being a female? I don't really know.

  • it is said that no one's soul is complete until they have loved a bird

  • So sorry for your loss. I had a rainbow lorikeet and his name was skittles, i had him for a short time only 8 months. But in that eight months he became my best friend his death was sudden and unexpected! one night he got cage fright and broke his neck in the cage. i only have 5 pictures to remember him by but i cant get them of my camera. =( your video has helped me alot. he died in Dec 2009 I MISS YOU SKITTLES R.I.P

  • did she die of old age or illness? how long do lorikeets live normally? your video made me cry!!!

  • Skittles was 4-1/2 years old. (I got her when she was 5 months old.) She was diagnoised with a heart condition right before she turned 4 years old. Fluid was building up in her chest. She had to go in to a specialist every couple of weeks to have the fluid drained. Then it was every week to have it drained. Lorikeets can live up to 25, even 30 years supposibly.

  • @xxxxUsernamexxxxxxx most parrots when well cared for can live up to 30 years

  • how old was skittles? I'm so very sorry for your loss.

  • Your video made me cry so much. I have a lory just ike Skittles. My lory's name is Nikki and she will be 2 on March 12 2010. She is a dear, sweet bird and I love her sooooo much. I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you get yourself another beautiful bird like Skittles so you can have many more happy memories. xox

  • I like your lory's name. They are sweet & affectionate birds....and smart! I did get another bird, but not a lory. I got a White Bellied Caique named Pico. He's as much as a clown as Skittles ~

  • I was sobbing by the end, I lost my Lori Cookie a year ago to a brain aneurism, she died in my hands..She was very much like skittles, I am so sorry for your loss.

  • How old was Cookie? Rainbow Lorikeets are such wonderful birds, aren't they?!

  • So sorry for your loss of such a beautiful friend and companion. You have been blessed with an experiance that most would not know or understand. This clip brought tears to my eyes as I know the loss you must feel.

  • Thank you for your comments. I do feel blessed to have had a companion like Skittles - she was definitely "one of a kind". She was not only smart, but very loving ~

  • yeah i got teary eyed too ;-) too close to my heart

  • I still get teary eyed when I watch the video......guess I always will ~ Brings back a lot of memories - good memories!

  • Oh, so true, and you can always feel good knowing what you did for him. You are a wonderful person......

  • Aw, I am SO sorry. This truly made me cry:) I also have a Lori named Stanley who is getting on in years. God Bless you, because he sure had a good life with you. What a beautiful dedication......

  • Skittles was a wonderful companion! She was spoiled rotten just the way they all should be ~ Thank you

  • i had a bird named skittles die too ;-( skittles was a sweet conure a colorful one ;-) i now have a lory named lory hehe

  • Skittles was a happy bird - a very happy bird! And she did have a happy life almost to the end. Towards the end I think the trips to the vet & the draining of the lungs was starting to wear on her. I would spend the money all over again to have her those extra six months ~

  • So sad.. Made me tear up.... I moved overseas waiting for my hubby and my Cheeky (scaly breasted lori) to move over.. its been 4 months apx.. I miss him/her so bad.. we webcam and voice.. and I cant imagine my life without Cheeky.. and yes they are our kids.. and ppl without birds think were crazy.. But these lori's are not like birds they have sooo much personality.... Cheeky has shown me what life is all about!! I love my cheeky lil man!! xx RIP Skittles!!! We love you!!!xxx

  • R.I.P SKITTLES:[

  • She is resting in peace - that's for sure - without any more discomfort ~

  • They are! I love lories in general. We have 4,including another female rainbow,Phoebe. They are so full of personality!

Did they know what caused his heart condition?I've heard of a lot of lories having liver/kidney issues...never heart.

  • Skittles went to specialists from the time she was diagnoised to when she died. The doctors think she was born with this condition - they really wasn't 100% sure.

  • Yes, she died May 2007 of a heart disease.

  • sorry for your birds death.

  • Thank you.....I got her when she was 5 months old & she lived to be 5-1/2 years old. Here I thought she would live to be a ripe old age of at least 25 years or so. I'm glad I had her the little time I did - she was a wonderful & smart bird!

  • So sorry for the loss of your beloved friend. We lost our Skittles(also Rainbow) at 8 years old due to Iron storage disease.

  • I really thought that if & when I would lose Skittles it would be to iron storage disease - I heard so much about it. Never thought heart disease would get her. Rainbows are wonderful birds, aren't they?!

  • is he dead

  • that is my birds name

  • Really? What kind of bird is your Skittles?

  • he is a rainbow lorikeet

  • Since you don't know how old he or she is and you've only had him a year, it may take you a little time for him or her to learn "no bite". But believe me, they are very smart, & I have no doubt he or she will learn.....especially if they like to be on you. Be patient & give him or her a lot love ~

  • I can't still tell how old he is like bird age, but I get him like a year ago.

    -NumberZero999

  • i have one too but mines keeps biting me, any help?

  • First, Skittles never like anyone, including me to touch her back - so I respected her by not touching. Second, when ever she would bite, I would say "no bite", after the third time I would put her back on her cage. Skittles was never really very bity - but when she did, this is what I did. It may work for you & it may not. It won't hurt to try.

  • Awesome thanks! I will try it out and come back in a month or two to tell you if it works or not.

    -NumberZero999

  • How old is your Lory & when did you get her or him? Just curious ~

  • I can actually watch this video now with out tearing up. It makes me smile when I see her & the funny bird she was. (I now have a Caique named Pico.)

  • Lil angel Skittles was no doubt.May she sleep peaceful.I have two of my own and oh my god i love them, but they aren't as tame as this perfect one. Please tell me how you suspected something was wrong with her?in regards to her heart

  • I suspected something was wrong when her abdomen/chest was full looking. The vet (an avian vet) first thought maybe she had an egg that she couldn't have. After running tests & x-rays, he sent her to a specialist here in Houston. I feel really fortunate that we have avian specialist here in Houston. She ended up having fluid on her lungs which was stemmed from a heart disease. She was diagnoised with it in Dec. 2006 & lived until May 2007. She was such a special bird! One of a kind ~

  • I often think that 'non-birders' dont understand what we birders feel...Losing a 'bird' can be likened to 'losing a child' as most of us feel the same way bout our fids as we do bout our kids. It can be said: "Fids, Kids, One of the Same!" I truly believe this.

I loved your tribute. Im owned by a conga grey, but I cannot imagine my life without him, and I dread the day coming...I cant say any more..cos I cant see. The keyboard isnt there, the tears are..

  • Yea, I miss her too ~

  • Can't watch this tribute without a kleenex handy. Miss this little gal.

  • I'm so sorry about Skittles, she was truly a beautiful lory with an amazing life! she'll always be in your heart! I just lost my albino budgie (Rainbow) so I know how you feel.

  • oh yes they're such cute clowns. THey always know how to make you smile. I know, they are physically small but in spirit they're giants=)

since i've always felt/been a little sister for him to take care of I've always seen and felt his great, like, experienced soul. Even my dogs have a great respect for him. Chico was the one in charge.

Ah well, I'm happy for my Chico now, I bet he's flying around happily in a better place. Since he couldn't fly when we had him.

    I'll never forget my Chiquito.

  • I'm sorry for your lost, I can see you loved her. What a wonderful little rainbow=)

I also had a rainbow lorikeet named Chico. He came when he was around 13 and I was 3. He watched me grow 'til I was 19. He's been so caring and loving and he had such a great personality. I bet your little Skittles had too. It's hard to loose such a wonderful and loving soul. But I know he's still around. I can feel him, although it's never been the same since he passed. I miss him like hell='/

  • Yea, I do still miss her. She was not only smart, but very affectionate, but still a "clown". When I got her I actually thought we'd grow old together. With what she went through at the end, I know she is at a better place now. Chico sounds like a wonderful bird too. They're small birds with BIG personalities. I don't think you ever stop missing them, huh?

  • Rest in peace dear Mr Skittles xx

  • Beautiful tribute! I can see that you loved Skittles a lot and she had a great life.

I admit this made me teary, my heart goes out to you for losing such a special friend. I have a rainbow lorikeet (Swainson's type) and I couldn't bear the thought of losing her, she's my best buddy. Skittles reminds me so much of her.

  • Skittles was my best buddy - I never thought I could bond with a bird like that. She meant everything to me. On a happier note, I did get another bird. I couldn't bear getting another Rainbow Lorikeet, but did get one with very similar personality - a White Bellied Caique. He'll turn one year old this coming Thursday. He's a real sweetheart too!

  • Wow - that was lovely. Have a rainbow myself and nearly killed me to watch that. May I ask how Skittles passed? Only five years old?

  • I got Skittles when she was 5 months old and was very healthy until she was almost 5 years old. She went to a avian specialist & they diagnoised her with heart disease. She was such a special bird! I'll never forget her. I did get another bird - a white bellied caique who will be 1 year old this coming March. I was afraid to get another Rainbow for fear I would be comparing it to Skittles.

  • Skittles was such a special bird that I wanted to have something I could go back on & watch. Not that I will forget her, but will enjoy showing her in all her personalities & things she did. Thank you for your kind words ~

  • wairoaguy - thank you for the compliment! This slide show will be something I'll always have & treasure - not that I need it to remember Skittles though. I don't think a day goes by that I don't think of her.

  • Oh my god!!! I cant beleive Im actually in tears here...what a moving and awesome tribute to our feathered friends....its a credit to you for making this.....kind thoughts and regards to you xx

  • It really wasn't made to make you cry (even though I teared when I watched it). I just wanted to let everyone know what a special bird Skittles was.

  • HOW did I miss this?! I am subcribed and never got a notice about it. I read about this on the bird channel on blogs. I Love the slide show and crying my eyes out. But what a beautiful memory slide Thanks for sharing that with us.

  • OMG Cindy, I am crying my eyes out!! What a beautiful tribute to such a beautiful girl. Thank you for sharing this with us. I will bring Specci down later and show him.

    We love you..

    Amy

  • Yes, I won't argue with you about Skittles being a special bird~ I'm glad I made the video too for others to see, but something I will have to keep & treasure. She is definitely missed.

  • Skittles was such a special bird. I am very happy you made this video for everyone to see. Poirot and Pringle
