Koreans don't drink water straight from the tap, we have sanitizers at home, and MSG is a health concern in a lot of countries, not exclusive to Korea. Fluoride in tap water is necessary, because Korea's water is too polluted, otherwise you'd be suggesting that we drink bacteria that can potentially kill us.
If Korea is immersed with liberalism and democracy to an extreme point like America, this country would fall apart into pieces. Take the US for example. How well along is it now?

FAIL. Top US beef importing nations such as Japan also halted their trade with the US at the first sign of BSE. There's no stupidity about wanting to prevent introduction of deadly diseases to your nation, whether it'll effect you directly or not.
If the world didn't react to BSE, there'd be BSE beef imported to Korea, and a lot of Koreans would either be sick or dead from BSE. However due to demonstrations and rallies, only the top quality health inspected beef are imported today.

The BSE discovered in US was in a Washington state slaughter house and the cow that was infected with BSE was a Canadian cow that was shipped to Washington for slaughter. And it was ONE cow. Also BSE isn't the same thing as Mad Cow Disease. Mad Cow Disease is vCJD which is contracted by eating nerve tissue of a BSE infected cow. Let me remind you, FIRST case of BSE in US occured in 2003, only 5 YEARS ago.
BSE in Britain occured in 80s. The people with symptoms started to show after a DECADE and over hundred of patients died, and similar brain-damage disease increased.

Also, if You've ever seen a Korean protest, the disdain for the police is a common sight. Some protesters attack the police with metal poles, bamboo sticks, or fists. These police are only college kids doing their mandatory military service. They aren't the same police as in the 80's under a dictatorial rule. When they are attacked, they respond, and then the cameras start rolling. I have to admit though, the protest organizers are extremely good at showing their side of the story

I think citizens are doing this, not because of beef with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, but because the government took subtle hostile action without the citizen's approval. Plus, the president didn't sign the contract, only a low ranking minister did. Such important decisions that effects all of the citizen's health should be informed to everyone in that nation and consulted until it settles to a reasonable decision.

The Korean police need to beat some sense into these demonstrators.
95% of US cows that are killed are less than 24 months old. That's because after that age cows gain more muscle than fat and the ranchers cannot get good price for them. It is in the best interest of the cow ranchers to sell them when they are less than 24 months old.
There is currently no law in the US that prohibits the slaughter of cows that are more than 30 months old.

Meat from really old cows are sold as hamburger to schools and prisons in the US. If what the Koreans are saying is true half the prison population should have the disease.

People also forget the Crudzfeld Jacobs disease occurs naturally in humans who don't eat beef. It's the variant form that is caused by eating beef. And even that hasn't been proven 100%

and others are not putting new restrictions on US beef. only maintaining old restrictions. but i think its fair to say that US beef is ok since there has never been anyone with mad cows disease in the US.

Even though this is very serious situation, but sometimes it is funny to me. In the beginning, it started from wrong bad rumor, now they are so concentrating on the demonstration that they forgot the reasons. They know they will not be purnished. Maybe I am wrong, but don't they look enjoying demonstration? I am sure some of them act like legendary patriots but they maybe don't know the reason of their illegal actions. Water cannons could be safe when it is fired in porper way (distance, angle and etc.). However they didn't keep the regulation.
Most of public broadcasting blamed the government for that reason. Also, fire extinguish is not the legal tool.
It was peaceful demonstration against ridiculous contract (beef deal with US) which was done by stupid president and government.

Prions are virtually indestructible [if you cooking sense] and if infected beef is buried in the soil, not even evegetables are safe. Add its long incubation period, and now we know why people want to stop it before it comes in. Because although USA beef may be 'safe', if a case of mad cow disease starts it could be a disaster. The president isn't going to check all the beef if the imports begin.

You do have to take the good with the bad. The protests are important, after all. Even an economist has to eat and bathe. If Lee was concerned about the economy and the FTA agreement he should have done things better, communicated more with the people and perhaps made compromises on the canal or something else, to avoid a mass protest and thus harm his precious economy. more over in science, the explanation of a cause involves A causing B, which require A to be the only treatment to B, but if the President is A and the outcome of an action is B, it is not responsible science to say that the president caused A, because there are many variables that caused B, perhaps a D,E,F,G,I, and so on. While a president might be in office when an economy goes bad, but he alone cannot cause it to go bad. Perhaps you can rely on this military style of responsibility.

No one democratic president can ever single handedly cause something. It is also fair to hold accountable those who assisted him, or those who failed to stop him. This is logic, and only logic is science, all else is nonsense in terms of science.

if you want to take it a little deeper, human beings do not have free will b/c our socialization dictates our thoughts, brain development, perceptions of choices, and behaviors, so the actions of a president are not necessarily of free will, but only an expression of behavior that is a result of how his or her environment and experiences taught him or her to act.

Every Korean economost I talk to thinks Korea should import beef an the fear is being exaggerated. And I have talked to several economists in Korea's top schools.

But the people aren't thinking of the economy - they're thinking that they want to be able to eat beef or buy nappies or cosmetics without worrying about mad cow disease. It's a matter of priorities - for the people, of course a potential health concern, expensive water and health care, and increased environmental issues are more important. They want to know they can live in relative peace before thinking about the economy.

I'll trust Lee when all his doings stop being suspiciously linked to members of his family or political party, and when he agrees to import only cattle under 30 months [the standard, from 2009 onwards, for pets in USA] and to check a reasonable amount of the imported beef for mad cow disease. And when he actually listens to people and gives proper replies instead of letting them get angry and frustrated. None of this is likely though, which is the biggest shame. But you have to try.

I don't agree with the people who say they are terrified of being eaten up by mad cow disease and that Koreans may all be wiped out. I agree that the beef deal has problems, and that Lee is incompetent. Squawking people aside, you don't get so unpopular in such a short time without reasons. And believe me, there are reasons.

that he's quite incompetent. He's did a whole lot of things the people hated, then he ignored their anger, blocked the media to stop people from getting accurate information and let the whole thing bubble over. Terrible. And this is the man who is going to be president for 5 years.

If Lee had given the facts to the people to calm their fears of mad cow disease in a way they could understand, then this may not have happened [though I doubt it, considering the canal and the water/health care issues]. But all he did was ignore the people, let the media run wild, and refuse to talk about the beef deal. You reap what you sow - even if it turns out that USA beef is safe [which is a good thing, because Koreans aren't angry towards the USA in the first place] it's clear
