Cops are trained not to feel and to believe you are guilty until proven innocent. In Chicago: Days of Rage by Martin Rots, the scene where Abbie Hoffman is being interviewed is evidence of this insanity.
9. If Arrested Outside Your Home, Do Not Accept an Offer to Go In Your House for Anything.

Shut the F. up! Do not attempt to convince the officer of your innocence. You ARE innocent. I don't care if they have you on video with the smoking gun SHUT UP until your lawyer gets there.

This entire 50 min video can be summed up like this: Cops work for the DA/PA. PA stands for PROSECUTING attorney. That means an officer is only talking to you if he's collecting data in order to build a case AGAINST you. No cop has EVER taken the witness stand ON BEHALF of the defendent. Ever. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..." never for you. As this guy says it can NEVER help you...ONLY hurt you. End of discussion.

Listen up young black men. In the old days the older white men such as mayors and police chiefs and factory owners. Decided who got hired to the better jobs. Discriminating was the practice of the day. Now the police will arrest young black men and give them a police record that way people do not have to hire them to the better jobs because of police the record. They can hire their own children. That way they can keep the black race in poverty. And control them.
Well saying "I will only speak when my lawyer is here" makes you sound guilty, or like you got something to hide, and this alone might cause the police to sniff around more and try to pin the case on you. Amirite?
@KnightMD It doesn't matter; they're going to try pinning it on you anyway. Talking to them just invites them to hang you with your OWN words. Force them to work for your conviction; don't do their work for them.
If you are completely uncooperative, (exercise your rights, don't be an asshole) you have maximum protection against abuse. To the police, "cooperation" means "Waiving your rights." Be polite, but don't give up your rights. Never consent to search, never sign anything, etc.
He is mistaken in his conclusion that one should never speak to the police.
Here is an example: see 625 ILCS 5/11-401(b) and People v. Brady, App. 2 Dist.2007, 308 Ill.Dec. 356, People v. Walker, App. 1 Dist.1974, 18 Ill.App.3d 351, People v. Lucus, 41 Ill.2d 370, 372
28:00 "Thank God you're in America, where police abuse is illegal. And every once in a blue moon a cop gets in trouble. In Italy they never get in trouble ever." Yeah thanks...
"I never try to get an innocent person in the interrogation room." Well, then! I guess that makes your job all the easier considering you've admitted that there are so many laws that everyone is guilty of something...fascist.
Absolutely, yes. If they don't adequately inform a suspect of the Miranda Rights, that person can be released without arrest, or have cases thrown out from that little misstep.
My other friend got car accident. Some idiot policeman hit his car. Police take this investigation and they delay it as much as they could so policeman get away with it. Police lie, steal and cover each other. Judge etc just help them.
If you see policeman, never talk to him. If you deal with policeman, forget about wining with this liars and cheaters.

@carinavi24 well i dont think you would just stay silent forever...this vid tells me not to talk to a cop until my lawyer is there.as long as im not guilty who cares if they think so..
Sad society when the first autocomplete of "never talk to..." is "the police" and not "strangers." Our gov't is severely disturbed when its citizens are more afraid of law enforcement than they are of those they're supposed to protect us from.
@MeredithOD You've fallen for the propaganda you've been taught at school and by the media. The Police are not there to protect YOU. They are there to protect the state [the government] and those who own property [the very wealthy].
If you choose to work in a uniform that supposedly gives you the (pseudo)right to use brute force against your peers to achieve anything there must be something definitely wrong with you and I sure would not want you as a public agent paid with my very own money...
In court you should ALWAYS require evidence besides eyewitness testimony. I hate our court system for holding eyewitnesses as the highest form of evidence when scientists and psychologists know that eyewitness testimony is terrible and unreliable.
Very informative but at 27:50 when the policeman espouses that we are fortunate to live in the US because of how the police are allowed to arrest and interrogate?!! I guess that alone underlines how old this video must be .. or this guy is living in la la land.
Police are not only allowed to lie to you. But are trained and encouraged to do so. If you lie to them, you comit a felony. Anything you say will be used against you. But the "anything you say" is more anything that the cop remembers and/or invents.
You must be pretty damn stupid to talk to a trained liar whose only purpose is to find people to arrest. So when dealing with a cop: "Shut the fuck up!"
@29Essan I guess you didn't get my joke. Seriously, though, I think the point of this video is only that you shouldn't talk to the police if you're a suspect. I don't think the guy is trying to stop victims reporting crimes.
@marty7044 His point was the police did say shot, but incorrectly thought they had not and said they had not (IE, honest mistake by the police that could be used against the defendant). Other people I believe are thinking what he said early on about the paper report.
Am I naive for thinking I could get through an interrogation by just resolving to not say a word no matter what? I don't see how a cop "doing paperwork" would make me anxious enough to talk.
Not being sarcastic I wanna know, how could a strong silent type be broken?
@Dsgooden You underestimate how intimidating the entire process is. I was picked up by police officers once when I was young because my parents had been in a car accident and my uncle was coming to pick me up (I didn't know). Just sitting in the room had me terrified that I did something wrong. I was racking my brain trying to think of a way to say things that wouldn't get anyone in trouble while also worrying if I was mistaken for some crime. And I was just waiting for my uncle.
I was asked questions by the police while under age without my parents consent and my mom sued them. LoL He came to my house and said are you $&"&$& I said ya.. He said I'd like to ask you a few questions about a fight at your highschool. So I answered. I saw everything but lied. Them my mom found out and sued them for I forgot but I got some money from it. ;D
@marty7044 When he said that, he was on a whole different scenario than when he read the paper. Your brain, as he stated, filled in that it was for the same, because of the lack of information. Just like the audience did.
I watch this video every few years, along with other flexyourrights videos in order to remind myself how to appropriately handle any unlikely police interaction.
Implying that all cops are corrupt. Police do arrest the aholes that only want to hurt you. Tired of getting harassed? Tired of being arrested? Tired of unreasonable searches that end with the cops having your crack and you sitting in the back of the patrol car? FOLLOW THE FREAKING LAW. Duuur
@Jaenus80 It was the most important trial of the 20th century, and while it wasn't perfectly handled, it was done far better than simply lining the Germans/Japanese/Italians up against a wall and shooting them.
Or was that supposed to be a Holocaust-denial comment? If that's the case then you have far bigger issues to concern yourself with than Justice Jackson's reputation.
@BigMikeMcBastard Your definition of not perfectly handled is comical. I'm a fan of justice, no matter the alleged crime. And why is not buying the full holocaust story indicative of having issues? Hardly, McBastard.
This professor is one smart dude. Any tips on being pulled over? I feel like I'm going to be in trouble if I start getting asked questions and I just sit there with a blank look on my face not saying anything.
@thizzlebot Talk to the officer like he's a normal person, and treat him with some respect and dignity. If you can show that you're not an ahole who thinks all cops are aholes then you're going to have a pretty good chance at getting a warning. If you can relax and maybe get him to laugh you'll be in a pretty good place too. Just don't move quickly, keep the interior light on, and tell him what you're doing before moving your hands out of plain sight.
@Trinith yeah ok, here's the reality. Cops have a quota, you are getting the ticket if they are under. Anything you say to the cop will be recorded and if you attempt to contest the ticket in a court room (which usually gets it lessened or thrown out) you will get it plus a little more thanks to your confession.
@CalicoCandy Actually they don't have a quota. But if they don't do their jobs then they will lose said job, so yes there IS an incentive to give you the ticket. However most of what you said is complete crap. I've talked my way out of many more speeding tickets than I've been issued. You should spend time with some cops on the job rather than spouting stupid, over-used rhetoric.

"Folks in Canada are more free than we are anymore". Wow. Didn't know I lived in Dictatorship. Ever notice how the Police never pick on people who follow the law, act like decent citizens, and don't use dope? Funny how that works.
Hard to belive almost that this kid was a law prof he is playis stand up comic pretty wel,l He's right never agree to be interviewd by police but that should be commons sese..But if keep your head when the cops come in a self-defense situation shut up after right you say "Thank God you here, I though he (they) would kill me for sure".It will be true too.
@stameyjd Sorry, but you're dead wrong. The ABA has absolutely NOTHING to do with each jurisdiction's admissions. I ran one state's admissions for over a decade. My only contact with the ABA was approving (or disapproving) their continuing education programs. The ABA doesn't regulate fees, either. What they do is to accredit law schools.
Wow I started watching this thinking...wow, typical lawyer protecting scumbags...halfway through the video I was convinced...and not because of the quality of the presentation but because of the law cited.
Karma will have a the next guy that refuses to talk to police will end up going to this dicks home, killing his wife, raping his daughter and shitting in this dicks mouth. This loser supports criminals.
@MickScarborough No it's not that he supports criminals, it's that he supports the Constitution and the rights that citizens have before the gov't stomps all over them. There are "crimes" that shouldn't be crimes..not rape and murder, but nonviolent victimless crimes.Cops often go after easy convictions. Just listen to the police officer in this video."People are stupid." so he spent his career proudly tackling the "dumb" criminals while the true threats to society remained free
The cop seems like the typical asshole cop that everyone hates. His whole body language and demeanor says to me that he has abused his power more than once. He basically is there to reinforce the fact that cops are lying assholes who you can't trust and he does a good job at it.
@MrSashamesic You misunderstand how the system works in that case. Circumstantial evidence is part of legal reasoning in every jurisdiction I've ever looked at. The burden of proof on the prosecution requires the tribunal of fact (usually a jury) to be impressed "beyond a reasonable doubt," but individual pieces of evidence don't have to meet that standard in the English/American system.
Otherwise a witness statement wouldn't be admitted if it stated "I think this is what I saw."
@MrSashamesic Basically, twelve members of a jury would have had to have been convinced "beyond a reasonable doubt" that he was guilty of all the elements of the offense. Circumstantial evidence is always going to factor in to that reasoning, and -- speaking for myself, and how I would hope that a legal system would be ordered -- I think evidence from a crime victim that a defendant had assaulted her, and THEN from the police that he had made an admission might be compelling.
@MrSashamesic It should at least go to the jury for them to decide. It's actually pretty hard to get 12 people to agree unanimously that all the facts are satisfied. If you never ever admitted indirect evidence (that is, non-CSI TV-style hard forensics) how would you ever get a conviction for rape? If the evidence isn't there, the police won't make an arrest, or the prosecutors won't take it to court. It's actually *really difficult* to mount a successful case against an intelligent defendant.
It'd be laughable to call it the "justice" system if it weren't so sad. The pigs don't care who they lock up, as long as someone is punished for the crime.

Other people I believe are thinking what he said early on about the paper report.
nlophasnotpaid 1 month ago
Am I naive for thinking I could get through an interrogation by just resolving to not say a word no matter what? I don't see how a cop "doing paperwork" would make me anxious enough to talk.
Not being sarcastic I wanna know, how could a strong silent type be broken?

@Dsgooden Unless you're subject to torture, you're good.
PepsiPope 1 month ago

Them my mom found out and sued them for I forgot but I got some money from it. ;D

Too bad Justice Jackson shit all over his reputation by being part of the sham trials of Nuremberg.
Jaenus80 1 month ago
@Jaenus80 It was the most important trial of the 20th century, and while it wasn't perfectly handled, it was done far better than simply lining the Germans/Japanese/Italians up against a wall and shooting them.
Or was that supposed to be a Holocaust-denial comment? If that's the case then you have far bigger issues to concern yourself with than Justice Jackson's reputation.
BigMikeMcBastard 1 month ago
@BigMikeMcBastard Your definition of not perfectly handled is comical. I'm a fan of justice, no matter the alleged crime. And why is not buying the full holocaust story indicative of having issues? Hardly, McBastard.

thizzlebot 1 month ago
@thizzlebot Talk to the officer like he's a normal person, and treat him with some respect and dignity. If you can show that you're not an ahole who thinks all cops are aholes then you're going to have a pretty good chance at getting a warning. If you can relax and maybe get him to laugh you'll be in a pretty good place too. Just don't move quickly, keep the interior light on, and tell him what you're doing before moving your hands out of plain sight.
Trinith 1 month ago
@Trinith yeah ok, here's the reality. Cops have a quota, you are getting the ticket if they are under. Anything you say to the cop will be recorded and if you attempt to contest the ticket in a court room (which usually gets it lessened or thrown out) you will get it plus a little more thanks to your confession.
CalicoCandy 1 month ago
@CalicoCandy Actually they don't have a quota. But if they don't do their jobs then they will lose said job, so yes there IS an incentive to give you the ticket. However most of what you said is complete crap. I've talked my way out of many more speeding tickets than I've been issued. You should spend time with some cops on the job rather than spouting stupid, over-used rhetoric.
Trinith 1 month ago
@Trinith Actually, there is a quota.

MrSashamesic 3 months ago
@MrSashamesic Basically, twelve members of a jury would have had to have been convinced "beyond a reasonable doubt" that he was guilty of all the elements of the offense. Circumstantial evidence is always going to factor in to that reasoning, and -- speaking for myself, and how I would hope that a legal system would be ordered -- I think evidence from a crime victim that a defendant had assaulted her, and THEN from the police that he had made an admission might be compelling.
Bobby3OOO 3 months ago
@MrSashamesic It should at least go to the jury for them to decide. It's actually pretty hard to get 12 people to agree unanimously that all the facts are satisfied. If you never ever admitted indirect evidence (that is, non-CSI TV-style hard forensics) how would you ever get a conviction for rape? If the evidence isn't there, the police won't make an arrest, or the prosecutors won't take it to court. It's actually *really difficult* to mount a successful case against an intelligent defendant.
