when i listen to these songs it reminds of my childhood when my parents would blast it and clean the house khmer kids these days just dont understand this khmer music
@Pkving Lol, He's everywhere stalking everyone! :) Technically Pking, if you know how to say "I love you" and "How are you?", that's knowing more than just a few words, lol. It would be correct to say you know a few sentences since they have complete thoughts. "I love you" is a declarative sentence, and "How are you?" is an interrogative sentence. I'm proud of you for falling inlove with the Beatles's music after having learned how to express yourself. I hope u can take this like a man, lol.
what the fuck are you talkin`about?? fuck off!! i ain't stalkin' fuckin' you!!` i may be stalkin`others, but not fuckin' smelly you!! d'ohh!!
so you're an english-language professor ehh!! d'ohh!! but "professor", some chinese elders here in english canada who live here 4 more than 30 years can say only "thank you" or "how are you??", and can't say anythin' else. They even get lost if you just ask: "how's your daughter??", d'ohh!!
darlin', i'm deeply sorry 4 my previous reply 2 you. it was 2 harsh. i was drunk when i wrote it, d'ohh!! i thought of removin' it, but if i do, people may not understand clearly what it was like. so i keep it but i withdraw the following words & phrases from it: "fuck off!!", "fuckin'" in "fuckin' you", & "fuckin' smelly" in "fuckin' smelly you".
Wow ! wow ! wow ! Athireach samleng tep !..I want to sing , I want to dance , I want to party ... when I hear sir Sinn sisamouth song it brings everything alive ! Thank U for posting this song, You help keep khmer music alive in khmer hearts.
excuse what i said earlier about supremescream having the original version without the added beat. i didn't see his response before until after i posted my comment tonight.
lol...i like jeff's definition of the Khmer word 'oun' in the context of this song. 'Oun' in general means 'you', but referring to someone of a younger person, whereas 'bong', is referring to an older person. i personally prefer to be called by name, especially if the other person doesn't know me; otherwise, it's a little insulting...and really, there is no need to get all mushy with someone you don't know...lol.
I'm from NZ and am not Cambodian - but listening to this music I get a deep sense of nostalgia - I cannot translate the words but I fully understand the feeling and emotion in this song. Long live Cambodia - I hope the nation throws up many more artists as great as Sisamouth. Thanks for posting this on YouTube.
@pkving Actually I'm a white guy, 55, New Zealand born. in my country in the 1960s we had artists like the fine Samoan singer, Herma Keil who had a similar vocal presence as Sinn Sisamouth - and local bands had a similar sound to those posted here. So musically perhaps the same influences were at work - a mixture of traditional nuance meets foreign styles. I do visit Cambodia and helped build a school in Bakong district, SR. I can't quite explain - there's just an affinity.
@kiwiduncan cambodia will never ever produce another sin sisamouth, if you truly love the old stuff you will be absolutely heart broken to hear the facile rubbish that is being made today
@SnakyShaker For sure, young Khmer I know in Siem Reap are ALL into hip hop and artists like Chris Brown. I don't know if my reaction to that is because of my age or not. I do think one advantage artists had in the 1960s was that there were fewer radio stations - so when Sisamouth released a new song, it had to appeal widely...and when it did, absolutely everybody was humming it: parents loved it, and their kids did. Now, music is aimed so narrowly. It doesn't bring us together.
Jeff, if the same song ("Prous Teh Oun") you posted 8 months ago was the original, then who perfected this same song? I like this version more than the original. (By the way, I thought its title was "Perouh Teh Oun"? a while back when I listened to it). Who ever remastered it did a very good job. Congrats! Thanks for posting!
@jeffmagic32 thank you for your response, jeff. great job to the person who altered this song. i love the added beat. it's the same version like the one i favorited from somnearntmey's video.
This song is indescribable. With so much we went through as a people and a race, this song makes me feel happy proud to be Cambodian. Thank you for posting this. I remember listening to this when I was a child, while me and my parents were driving around Long Beach.
you aint know what he's sayin' & yet you love the song so much ehh!! d'ohh!! well well that's not surprisin'. when i was a kid in phnom penh who didnt understand english at all except a few words like "how are you??" or "i love you", i fell in love with the beatles music.
4 the cambodian soul, samouth is like the beatles & elvis combined 4 the english-speakin' soul.
Regardless of his national origion, he was born in Cambodia, married Cambodian woman, spoke only in Cambodian, wrote the song better than all of us put together, please give him a chance and let's honor Mr. Sin Sisamouth in the best way possible.
Count me in. Let's honor Mr. Sinn Sisamouth and let's him reach the pinnacle in music history. If Elvis is the king of rock'n roll then Sinn Sisamouth is the King of Music. I hope his music, his voice will be in the Hall of Fame. Why in California? Why not in Indiana? Please don't tell me that Cambodian only settled in California! You build a platform/stage they will come. Midwest is the grassroot of America. Let's make it happen!
i believe your'e a female vietnamese. good you're curious.
the cambodian word "teh" has 2 uses. the 1st means "tea". 4 the 2nd, it would take a page 2 describe it. so let's just deal with it in the name of this song.
the word "pruos", the short form of
"pipruos", means "because", & "pruos teh" means "because of". the word "oun" means "you" in english, & its EXACT vietnamese equivalent is "em".
so it's "because of you". ahh, the english "you" aint sentimental, d'ohh!!
The title of this song translates to "Because of You". Word for word, "Teh" = "Because of". Whereas "Oun" means "You" referring to a girl or someone of a younger age.
"Prous Teh Oun" in English translation is "Because of You" or "For You" So, I would think that "teh" means "of" or "for." Correct me if I'm wrong though. :) Side note FACT: The Asian language in general (unlike any other European language) not cannot be fully translated into English without loosing the quality of meaning.

My friend helped me with some lyrics, which I have posted in the 'more info' section off to the right. If anyone thinks there are any errors, let me know and I will correct them.
Man, oh man! I really miss hearing some good oldies. My father was a really big fan of his, as well as the other great artists like Ros Sereysothea, Pan Ron, and a few others of that era. I grew up listening to this, and it honestly has been 14 years since I've heard some good Khmer music. It brings back such great memories that puts life back into the deepest of my roots...thanks for the post.
This is originally a Mandarin Chinese pop from Hongkong in around 1968. The title is "Because of You".
Sisamouth have recorded many cover versions of foreign songs, he did a great job in broadening the horizon of Khmer pop music scene. You may be proud to be Khmer, but please be humble to appreciate foreign masterpieces and what Sisamouth had done.
what good are you doing with stating that fact. what part of your ego is being filled by redirecting khmer people's enjoyment in Sisamouth's songs into an historical observation of the music?
