@Azt3ca21 he is not the main one, but he is the one that lives most outside of the dreamworld on earth (as in he is on earth, and you can see him when you are not asleep, insane, or on special drugs). people just liked the whole idea of c'thulhu a lot i guess. he is more powerful than earth's gods, but certainly not at all the most powerful god in the mythos. for that look to azathoth or nyarlathotep.

@roflmaufull Yog-Sothoth is arguably the most powerful, along with Azathoth and Ybb-Tstll. Lovecraft himself felt that Yog-Sothoth was the central "figure" in the mythology. People just like Cthulhu. I can't blame 'em.

@TheZombiePimpernel I would argue that Nyarlothotep is up there since there are some people who claim The Unspeakable One himself, Hastur is merely one of Nyarlothotep's masks. Sure, Yog-Sothoth is everywhere, and everywhen existing in all places an dtimes, but he is bound so securely there is nothing he can do.

@TheZombiePimpernel I'm not sure if Ybb-Tstll really counts though, seeing as how she was created several decades after Lovecraft died. He himself used to refer to his stories as his 'Yog-Sothothery', so I'd say Yog Sothoth should probably take point of place, even though Azathoth is supposed to be the sultan of the universe.

@UniversalWhatnot yeah Dunwich horror and Colour out of Space are my two favorites, the Fryes screaming for help over the telephone as that thing smashes into their house and DRINKS THEM is blood curdling and the Idea of a parasitic wavelength of light (or whatever the hell that thing was) is chilling. Some basic Lovecraft should be compulsory for anyone studying literature. I'm doubtful that we'd have films like Alien, The Thing, or even Event Horizon if not for Lovecraft.
