yes i guess you are correct about the frog thing cause it was like that in the book... But i still love the gollum in peter jackson lotr. he had more personality you felt sorry for him but disliked hime at the same time.... i guess we are not gonna agree are we :)
@stitch99 Oh yeah?My friend came over while I was watching LOTR and asked me to split an oz. of cocaine with him and go to S.Beach.I had just been shreddin my biceps in the gym and was down, considering the twin Brazilian Bombshells I met last night were blowin up my I-Phone and wanted to chill. So me and my bro-ski hit one more round at the gym to wail on our pecs and wash board abs. After my protien shake I hit the showers, and a couple of lines after 3 Johnny Walker Blues.Woke up smellin like RIO
When Gollum first appears in The Hobbit, he is described as "a small slimy creature [with] two big round pale eyes in his thin face". Later, it's mentioned that Gollum had "long fingers", "large flat feet", and six teeth (including fangs). That's all the description we ever get of him. So, actually, Gollum looks exactly like he's supposed to.
@zvermilyer3 I know, I read the book. But he's green and furry here. He looks like a furry frog thing, you can't deny it. I'm not sure he looked like that in The Hobbit. I reread it last week, so I know.

@grechyweiners Yeah :) I mean, I know it's animated, and it was in the 80's but the 80's had great movies going on that this one turned out like a pile of awful. And Gollum looks like some weird furry frog thing with ears on top of that.
@grechyweiners Ugh, I know. After I saw this on TV a few years ago, all I could say was "Good lord, it hath begun." then I wanted to kill myself. How could you make a bad Lord of the Rings movie. Even a low budget piece of crap would be a LOT better than this.
@grechyweiners Nothin' nothin' I just wound't go around any pizza places any time soon if I were you, the real zealots for this movie hang around there alot.
@Visser0x Hey!! i was just saying what i thought about it.... peter jackson gollum was much better the this one ( it did not look like a frog fish thing but an actual distorted hobbit) and. the song was just plan pointless. Don't like it too bad buddy... :)
@Visser0x He wasn't supposed to look like a frog, he was just colloquially described as one in the book. He was one of the river folk and was distorted through long life and complete darkness. Ugly and pasty, basically.
Gollum is a great example of this. He barely thinks of anything besides his precious ring, addiction drives him to go to great lengths get the ring while his health is reduced to near zero. He is a crawling, emaciated creature when he found them who only had strength due to his all-consuming craving for the Ring.
His life was miserable, like Sam said he was wretched and pathetic but extremely pitiable.
One of the most profound moments of the entire series. It's too bad Peter Jackson's narrative never quite caught onto the importance of this moment, like the cartoon did.
Seriously, every time I see that scene with Frodo grabbing the ring, I get chills. The power of the scene. The AWESOME use of the music (which itself is already great). The sheer spectacle of watching Frodo transform from a tired, beaten-up little Hobbit into He Who's Steps Make Gods Tremble. Hearing him threaten Golem as the thing cowers down, where seconds ago it was full of murderous hatred. Hell, even Sam lowering his sword with a look that says "HolyS***".
After just re-watching the Movies recently and now watching this clip.... I think I like froggy-Gollum more than movie Gollum. O.o Though, I've always loved frogs so....
Actually, Gollum's description in the books does make him sound pretty frog-like: In The Hobbit, he is called "a small slimy creature" with "two big round pale eyes in his thin face", "large feet" and "flat hands", and in the prologue to The Fellowship of the Ring, he is said to have "long fingers", his eyes are described as "luminous" and his feet as "flat". So the depiction of him in this film is actually pretty faithful to the book.
@SuperSaiyanAl -- I quote the book: "But remember what Gandalf said, even Gollum may have a part to play? But for him, Sam, I could not have destroyed the Ring... so let us forgive him! I'm glad you're here with me, here at the end of all things." (Mt. Doom blows up)
Also, there is a credible argument that the Ring speaks thru Frodo (or vice versa) and condemns Gollum to fall in the fire if he attacks Frodo. This proves to be the Ring's undoing.
For those who don't like this particular scene probably haven't read the book, since it's straight from the book (and the live action version was twisted to make Gollum the villain!)
The hell kind of book were you reading? Gollum WAS the villain. Regardless of how his actions panned out, he still attacked and tried to kill Sam and Frodo for selfish reasons. Sounds pretty villainous to me.
@SuperSaiyanAl Agreed! Gollums definately full of Villany! Lets also never forget that: He stalked Bilbos family for over 50 years Attempted stranglings Lured them to Shelobs den Lived by Murder & Foul play Vengeful Through a BOULDER at them and plotted against them even before biting off Frodo;s finger. Yep, Gollums one tough villan indeed!.....even if he did save Middle Earth.
OK, much of this movie is cheesy filler because they had to improvise on top of Bakshi's clusterf** of a movie. But the actual scenes they had with dialogue in this were straight from the book, mostly scenes PJ's ROTK cut altogether. (PJ said he didn't want to spend a whole movie showing hobbits crawling thru Mordor.) Plus the voice and animation of the lead characters is really good. Too bad about all that cheesy filler to make it kid-friendly.
Ah yes...Green Gollum used to give me the creeps as a kid but is STILL a beloved animated character. One of the highlights of watching Rankin/Bass' ROTK wasGOLLUM Scenes! Brother Theodore did a phenominal job revoicing such an awesome villan! He made him more threatening and angry than his Hobbit counterpart!
Sure, alot of people do give him a bad rep for his Green appearance; but hey, its to be dramatic and point out that hes middle-eartgs 1st mutant!
At some points...yeah it does suck compared to The masterpiece of "The Hobbit". But if Rankin/Bass were allowed to do The Fellowship and The Two Towers...ROTK probably would have been handled differently. But hey, its not all bad! All the voice actors returned! And who wouldnt want to see Gollum back in action! I mean... He got WAY MORE screen time and got revenge on Bilbo...by biting the finger off his nephew! So sure, its ok compared to THe Hobbit, but ROTK still rules! Yay Green Gollum!
Some people complain a lot about Gollum. In Rankin/Bass' defense, when Tolkien wrote "the hobbit", Gollum was not well described. So, when Rankin/Bass' made "the hobbit" they used only that description. Therefore explaining why Gollum looks the way he does. And if they'd changed Gollum's appearance, that would have confused a lot of "the hobbit"-fans.
I always liked how they run in this movie, and the main voice-actors (like Gandalf, Frodo). But I never liked that they use"God"...
Barad-dur looked pretty scary to me when I watched it. I thought the Barad-dur in this ROTK cartoon was even scarier looking than in Peter Jackson's version.
How is that scarier? If I put a pleasant environment around it, with birds chirping and merry villagers singing, then it would be a nice castle that you wouldn't mind living in. Barad-Dur in Peter Jackson's masterpiece, there's no way you could do that. It would still look like Satan's Tower, just not as much in a depressing environment.
I guess you're right. Perhaps the fact that the Barad-dur in this cartoon was in a desolate environment and a very dark grim sky that made it look so scary. I don't know about you but I thought the Rankin-Bass RETURN OF THE KING was alot scarier than Peter Jackson's version. It gave me nightmares and it still gives me the creeps a little bit even to this day.
Sir Ian McKellen did an absolutely incredible, oscar-worthy job. He was amazing as Gandalf. But I believe that John Huston captured the character's personality better.
Wah!!! I love this movie! I saw this last when I was 5 or 6 yrs old. I just saw Flight of Dragons last night on youtube in 13 segments and it was awesome! This makes me so happy!Do you think you could upload the whole LOTR animation? That would be soooo great!

oh, see I couldn't kill him either if he was begging like that. Even though I know what would've happened, I still couldn't do it.

John Huston is the best Gandalf of them all! His voice is great, it fits The Wandering Wizard perfectly!

Absolutely! This movie has the definitive Gandalf.

I totally agree 100%:)
jonescalypso 5 years ago
Even though it's your opinion, it is incorrect. Sir Ian McKellen is Gandalf.

Sir Ian McKellen did an absolutely incredible, oscar-worthy job. He was amazing as Gandalf. But I believe that John Huston captured the character's personality better.

I respectfully disagree.
DamnationReveries 3 years ago
I agree. John Huston's voice stands out in my mind as Gandalf.
