It was oppressed by the English government for centuries. Children were caned for speaking it in school amongst other methods. Hence it went from everybody speaking the language to the current status where about 25% of people speak it on an everyday basis. I am one of those people.
As we now have our own parliament Welsh is a compulsory subject for all children and is now again on the rise. You could say it is a reversal on what the English wanted.

You're quite right about the looks 12Aggiefan, they're Iberian, a throwback to the original Brythons that occupied this island before the fairer tribes arrived from Germany. Wales, at the time of the arrival of the Angles, Saxons and Jutes, was enjoying the culturally and intellectually rich "Age of the Saints", and continued to do so after the central European tribes plunged what was to become England into the Dark Ages. :)

For the most Welsh ppl ,singing the anthem (words in the programme) is the only contact they ever have with Welsh Lang even though it's vigorously marketed in schools, the £100 million a year in subsidies for Welsh telly which hardly anyone watches is sourced from London, btw, we don't merit praise for retaining our lang, cos most of us couldn't care less about it.

It was oppressed by the English government for centuries. Children were caned for speaking it in school amongst other methods. Hence it went from everybody speaking the language to the current status where about 25% of people speak it on an everyday basis. I am one of those people.
As we now have our own parliament Welsh is a compulsory subject for all children and is now again on the rise. You could say it is a reversal on what the English wanted.

Also, the gower peninsula in Wales was the first designated 'Area of outstanding national beauty' in the whole UK, and if you've ever been to to Snowdonia or the Pembrokeshire coast, you will know the meaning of beauty.
