  • From the side you look like nicolas cage

  • @ronoc931 Thank you for your comment. I have heard this before. Unfortunately, I do not have his acting abilities or his cash either. LOL Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • my favorite blues song , and probably the best version on the web !! very good job !

  • @xavierstein Thank you for your kind and generous comment. I am glad to hear you enjoyed my rendition and I greatly appreciate your encouragement.

  • Listen to the lyrics, they matter, as does the melody, and a bit faster, please.)

    There's lots worse versions around. * )

Get the real riff too man, this aint no jam.

  • @JTheRiffer Thank you for your comment. I appreciate your interest and sharing your opinion. Enjoy.

  • @JTheRiffer After a comment like that I think we are all dying to hear your version ;)

  • @JTheRiffer After a comment like that I think we are all dying to hear your version.

  • Sir I'm trying to get into the Delta Blues scene, and my problem starts where I just have one guitar and I can't decide weather I should stick to Open G or Open D. I just keep changing tunings, busting strings and not learning anything at all.

What's the best tuning to get in the Delta style in your opinion?

  • @MrFranciscoFidalgo Thank you for your interest and question. I would suggest starting with Open D. Once you get the coordination of alternating bass strings 6 and 4 with your thumb while picking notes on the high strings, moving on to Open G tuning will be easier. Additionally on my instructional video CD 3, I compare these two tunings and explain the relativity that makes it easier to move music from one tuning to the other thus expanding your abilities. Enjoy. Visit ebay / search: keni lee

  • Can I learn stuff like this from your lessons? Really like the the rootsiness.

  • @mrrich5th Thank you for your interest and question. Most definitely. My lessons start from the ground up as I present the authentic techniques and methods used to play this style. Not only do I teach traditional songs, but I also demonstrate clearly how to figure out songs and create your own arrangements. CD 1 - CD 3 offers a comprehensive course. I believe you will find them very helpful in your practice. You can also contact me if any questions arise as you work through the lessons. Enjoy.

  • This is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time. Thanks for the music, Mr. Burgess!

  • @LookOutForThatSquid Thank you for your kind words. Always nice to hear someone is enjoying my videos. Please check out some of the other ones by visiting my page. Enjoy.

  • I misinterpreted guit-fiddle disregard that nylon string stuff ;0]

  • @ZEDZOR2 I look forward to your video response. Git-fiddle is just an old time term for guitar. Remember in early America, banjos and violins (fiddles) were king. The small body Spanish parlor guitar grew in popularity later. It became more competitive volume wise with the addition of steel strings and the larger jumbo and dreadnought body sizes. Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess Yeh i c wot u mean, i tend to think of this type of music as tenor music,1 guy and 1 instrument generally, totally ties in with wot ur saying,This arrangements tough as nails Keni Lee your right hand picking is so smooth in transition its tough to emulate.Loving the challenge though .tc sir.

  • @ZEDZOR2 Thank you for your comment. Ya, after playing it a 1000 times or more on the street, it is bound to get tight. LOL Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess I know im reaching 4 the stars but i might reach the moon ;0]

  • I might post a responce 2 this Keni Lee -_- Just about got it.I totally 4got u do this with nylon strings,i tried on my classical yesterday but without a cone it sounded dead.Although this is a 3 part minuette the picking and timing make this arrangement a fair challenge.tc.

  • I had been trying to figure out how to play this song - the video helped a ton. Thanks, and great playing (as always)!

  • @ojnabieoot Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you found my video helpful. Enjoy.

  • White man has no business playin the blues........but I think an exception can be made here. Enjoyed this very much

  • @xBarcadiasxe Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • i hope you know better than to listen to negative and not constructive criticism! daddy stovepipe and you are the best two contemporary bluesmen in all of youtube land... This like so many others, is amazing

  • @gutcassidy Thank you for your comment. Yes, constructive responses are always welcome here, but you quickly learn if you are an artist to always evaluate the source of the comment. No highly trained and experienced expert will ripe you to shreds. Most commments here are simply a matter of personal taste. In general, I have been highly supported by the youtube community. BTW, I agree with you, Daddy Stovepipe is a wonderful player and singer too. Enjoy.

  • i actually found this to be considerably more exciting to listen to than most youtube vidoes out there. the playing is very fluid and soulful and the sound quality is decent too. i would like to hear the vocals a bit better, i thought they were too far in the back to hear properly. I'm interested in taking up slide myself, would you recommend CBG over a regular electric for a longtime player with no slide experience?

  • @donnysanders Thank you for your comment. There is definitely a very low fi homemade quality to my videos. I hope to upgrade to a camera with an external mic soon. Beginning slide either way, on a 6 string or a 3 or 4 string CBG is fine. Taking your time and just enjoying your practice is the real key. Feel free to write if you have any further questions. Enjoy.

  • One melody 2.36 long, not bat but boring.

  • @Wayfarer8 Thank you for your comment. Sorry to hear you found my song boring. Please post a video of yourself playing and show me how to improve my performance. I am always interested in constructive criticism. Enjoy.

  • Instant fan waiting for more ..

  • @heroncarver1 Thank you for your interest. You already watched all 230 of my videos? LOL Lucky for me, I just posted a new one. Enjoy.

  • Always loved this song, thanks for sharing it man. Built two cbgs so far and learning as fast as I can. Thanks again!

  • @skaterxant Thank you for your comment. Glad to hear you enjoyed my rendition. Sorry about the delayed reponse. I just returned from a 15 day trip to China. Happy Hoildays. Enjoy, Keni Lee

  • @skaterxant CBGG'S ARE COOL!!!!

  • @micmoable Thank you for your comment. Yes, I highly agree. Have you been to cigarboxnation? Enjoy.

  • @KeniLeeBurgess Never have but I will look into cigarboxnation soon

  • that is the weirdest guitar i have ever seen

  • @losbol6 Thank you for your interest and comment. Yes, it is quite unique. Please visit cigarboxnation to see more unusual guitars. Enjoy.

  • just sat 2 hours learning your version of "fishin blues" the other day. this will definitely be my next goal. awesome.

  • @hardtimeblues Thank you for your comment. I am glad you are enjoying the videos. Please consider supporting my efforts here on youtube by purchasing my instructional CDs that are available for sale on ebay by searching: keni lee

I believe you will find them very helpful for understanding the musical theory and techniques I used to create my renditions of these classic songs. Enjoy.

  • This is one of favorite videos on YouTube! Thanks Keni!

  • @scottievmusic Thank you for your interest and kind words. I am glad to hear you like my rendition. Enjoy.

  • Great job, dug the handslapping!

  • @Lockschmitt Thank you for your comment. I have a small programable drum machine. It takes time to program it bar by bar, but it definitely seems to add a nice percussion to the performance. Enjoy.

  • could be a dumb question.. but how are you making the drum machine sound :58 to 1:04

  • @iamelvisman68 Thank you for your question. Thats it exactly! I am playing against a programmable drum machine. Enjoy.

  • oh my god, that dog come in the end !! thats funny, and crazy, verry nice playng

  • @sisistar Thank you for your comment. Yes, it is quite strange and amazing. My dog, Onyx must have been a show dog before I rescued him from a local shelter. Every time I set up the camera, he is there. Enjoy.

  • Yes!

  • @rwdtk000000 Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • Love the way your dog pops out at the end. Choreographed that way?

  • @Aspley1990 Thank you for your comment. I only wish I could train him to perform like this on command. We would be on The Tonight Show. LOL. Enjoy.

  • Vraiment trop cool! En plus l'instrument fait-maison.. vraiment génial!!

  • @theworldisour Thank you for your comment and kind words. Enjoy.

  • Thats a beautiful guitar

  • @LeeVaiM Thank you for your comment. This guitar was built by James Millinchuk, a professional builder who has built guitars for performers like Sting and Bruce Springsteen. Enjoy.

  • Great version! Do you have a rub board on a foot pedal?

  • @0Reilly08 Thank you for your comment. I am using a small drum machine. It is capable of programing a whole arrangement bar by bar. It is a little tedious but the final product comes out nice. Enjoy.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

  • @neonbladedotcom Thank you for your kind words. Enjoy.

  • this is awesome

  • @hardtimeblues Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • Wow...great song. Well done. I've read about Bukka White in some blues books and this is the first time I've heard his music...

  • @irit8in Thank you for your comment. I believe this song dates back to his early 1930s recordings. The video footage and songs that most people are familiar with are from the 1960s Folk Revival period. Enjoy.

  • I think you'd be a good actor!! Have you also thought of going into acting too?

  • @healthnbeauty1 Thank you for your comment. I would enjoy the opportunity to study acting, but there are way too many irons in the fire already. In the future, I would like to do a music video that contains some acting too. Enjoy.

  • Mr. Burgess,

You have great videos, guitars and music. Love it!

I have build my own (cigar) box guitar. In Europe/Belgium a Cuban cigar box is hard to find, and European cigars are much smaller too.. So I build a guitar from an old fruit box.

Im a bad guitar player, but my shaky video respons is still dedicated to you.

    Thanks for the inspiration,

    Regards,

    King termo.

  • @termoking Thank you so much for your comments. They say, imitation is the greatest form of flattery. I am gald I was able to influence you into exploring the wonderful world of cigar box guitars. Thank you for your feedback. Enjoy.

  • Killer performance! I especially like the hammer on with the slap. And are you tapping a hi-hat with your foot as well?

  • @dirtystrings Thank you for your comment. The hammer on / slap is a Bukka White signature lick called "Slap the Baby". See his song Aberdeen Mississippi Blues here on youtube. I am also playing against a programmable drum machine. Enjoy.

  • Keni is a such a great teacher....I just got the first instructional CD and it is great..

Keni, do you plan on teaching this tune? And also do you like any one particular 'brand' of strings? I know you like heavier gage for slide...lighter for fingerpicking?

  • @chunter5100 Thank you for your kind endorsement. I hope at some point to tab out my arrangements, but please keep digging into CD1. It will help you get stronger with the foundational material to make figuring out this song by yourself easier. I like Martin Nickel Resonator Bluegrass strings for lower tunings like Open G and D. Enjoy.

  • Fantastic! I love it when your dog pops his head up at the end.

  • Thank you for your kind words. I don't quite understand it, but my dog, Onyx is fasinated by the camera. Set it up and he makes sure to get front row and center. LOL Enjoy.

  • Man, do I LOVE this one Kenni, of all of the songs you do, this is just the one I always go back to... I share it a lot on Fb too ;) I hope all is well in your life. Much love always~ Cecily☼

  • @endofdays212 Thank you for your comment and encouragement. Of all the videos I have posted over the years, this performance is one of my favorites too. Onyx is the best. Enjoy.

  • oh man what a treat...gotta check out your lessons!!

  • @greg91040 Thank you for your comment. My video lessons are available on ebay by searching: Keni Lee

I will also email some information. Enjoy.

  • Nicely played Keni!

  • Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • You're channeling Bukka W. Keep on, please. This is the music that first reached my soul as a lonely high school misfit ca. 1959. When I heard Dylan singing "You Gonna Need Somebody on Your Bond" in 1962 I was glad to discover, isolated as I was in the wilds of SoCal that I was not the only white boy who dug the raw sort of blues, hollers and moans.

  • Thank you for your comment. The early blues masters lived lives under a great economic depression and social injustice far beyond I have ever experienced. In some way I have always identified with their causes and the civil activism required to change it. There is a purity to their style. Even in their happiness, you know there is an underlining rage against the machine. Glad I could take you back. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • Great Great

    I like your Soul.!!!!!!!!!!

    and your Dog ! LOL

    Big Thanks from Germany

  • Thank you for your comment. Frohe Weihnachten. (I hope that is correct. LOL) Enjoy.

  • This is one of my favorite videos. I really like your version and your voice.

  • Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • love the guitar. love your singing. you remind me of Ry Cooder

  • Thank you for your kind words and encouraging comparison. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • Just great. This is living proof that to make good music, you only need TALENT, not expensive gear, of fast smoking fingers. Music is in the soul

    Congrats my friend,

  • Thank you for your kind words and encouraging thoughts. Yes, folk art is really the art of common everyday people. If you can find a medium to express yourself, art can be a sanctuary from the turmoil of your life, It usally does not cost alot. Definately cheaper than going out to have other artists entertain you. Broadway tickets!!! You work on your craft because you enjoy the practice. The fruit appears because you did the planting. It truly is a labor of love. Enjoy.

  • WOW. Sounds so cool!!!

  • Thank you for your kind words. Enjoy.

  • hi im trying to build my own cigar box guitar and can't fin the right size resonator cone any suggestions?

  • Thank you for your question. If you are looking for cones, they can be purchased from Frank at Republic guitars. For a small 3 or 4 string CBG you can use a ukulele cone. Enjoy.

  • Beautiful performance.

The sound from your guitar is extraordinary, and your voice stays with us.

Your dog comes out just at the right moment to make it a perfect picture at the end.

  • Thank you for your comment. I rescued my dog, Onyx from the shelter. He is very clever. Maybe he was a circus dog. LOL .Enjoy.

  • hey man! i love the guitar! was wondering if you bought it or made it from skratch? my friend and i tried making one but it failed sadly!

    =] xxxxxxxx =]

  • Thank you. This guitar was made by a local guitar builder here in New Jersey, James Millinchuk. You should visit Cigar Box Nation. There are many CBG builders there that will offer advise on building. Enjoy.

  • Bukka would be proud, best cover of this song I've heard.

  • Thank you for your kind comment. Enjoy,

  • Fantastic! I have been really busy studying at university for the last few years and have not been playing guitar very much but I graduated last month so no excuse not to now. I will definitely be buying your instructional cd as soon as I get a job. Thanks very much for the videos they are all great but this is my favourite.

  • Thank you for your comment and congratulations on your graduation. Best Wishes for finding a job...it certainly is a Mean Old World out there right now. The nice thing though about playing the guitar is that it is a very inexpensive hobby, offering hours of entertainment and satisfaction. Please feel free to write if any questions arise as you work through the lessons. Enjoy.

  • I love how the dog knows when to take a bow at the end. Love the song too.

  • Thank you. I rescued him from the local dog pound when he was one. He is a regular circus dog. When I set up the camera, he will sit right down in front of me. Go figure? Enjoy.

  • Very cool.

What gauge strings do you use? Must be pretty tough to be able to tune as low as C and still get that big sound.

  • Thank you. I use Martin Nickel Resonator Bluegrass strings. 16-56 Resonators are a little tricky in that if the strings are too loose, you get rattles and the cone is not driven correctly. If they are too heavy the pressure locks the cone and can cause it to crush in. Enjoy,

  • woooooo! I'm sure Bukka is tapping his foot up in the sky man. Really nice rendition you have here.

  • Thank you. Playing along with a small programmable drum machine really helps to keep it tight. Enjoy.

  • Great performance!!

  • Thank you.

  • Man I love this song! Keni Lee you really rock, this record is almost better than the original!

  • Thank you for the kind words. Enjoy.

  • cool hope i can learn bottelneck that good:P

    nice job

  • Thank you for your comment. If you are interested in learning this style, please consider purchasing my instructional video CDs that are available on ebay. Search: Keni Lee They are reasonably priced and will provide a clear understanding of the theory and technique behind Bottleneck Slide guitar. Enjoy.

  • Damn son you got that soul!

  • Thank you for your kind words. Enjoy.

  • üper dostlar:)

  • Thank you for your comment. Enjoy.

  • Great playing! My first exposure to you. Where have I been to have missed such a great talent. Rest assured, I'll play catch up ball from here on out, though I may not tackle building a cigar box guitar. Learning to play one like that would be plenty for me! Keep up the good work.

  • Thank you for your comments. Please check out my instructional video CDs that are for sale on ebay. Search: Keni Lee If you are interested in cigar box guitars, make sure you visit cigarboxnation. Enjoy.

  • HA HA!! Onyx wants to be famous too LOL!!! Nice dog Keni! My beagle Snoopy likes sitting with me every time I pick up my guitar ( He's a daddy's boy). Also, a quick update, I'm currently gathering materials for my cigar box guitar, I'm thinking of building 2 of them: 1 acoustic and the other electric. Thanks for the video keni, You are the MAN!!!

  • Thank you for your comments. Yes, he always makes sure to be around when I set up the camera. lol. A regular show dog. Please contact me when you finish your CBGs. I would love to see and hear them. So, I guess I will be seeing you soon at Cigar Box Nation. Enjoy.

  • Okay the dog popping out right at the end made this a perfect 5 stars. Great playing!

  • Thank you. Ya, isn't that crazy. I don't understand why, but if I set up my camera, my dog Onyx will be sure to be there. lol. Enjoy

  • I am going to Ebay to buy your cd and I am going to let my folks know as well, I grew up on bluegrass festivals and cajun fastivals and the twelve bar blues I am really digging this....SO GOOD!!! You are a real talent Keni!!! Please keep it up!!!! :)

  • Thank you. The auctions are up and running now. I believe they are going to end soon. If you have any trouble finding them, just understand I'm in between auctions and I will have the new auctions relisted shortly. Thank you for your support. Enjoy.

  • Wow! What a fantastic performance! I see a lot of guys who really mimic old blues players, but it's obvious this is YOUR personality coming through and it's really fun to watch. All the best!

  • Thank you. Yes, I'm not consciously trying to copy the early blues Masters, but I guess if you listen to enough of these old recordings and consider these men as your teachers, it is only natural your performances will be heavily influenced by their style. Enjoy.

  • I am absolutely in love with you now after this song.....man......what a goodie, i love it...it get's stuck in my head sometime's. You have a great talent and it is so wonderful that you share it so freely!!!

  • Thank you for all your kind comments. I love playing in this Old Blues style and it is nice to have youtube available to be able to connect to so many people from different parts of the planet. Enjoy.

  • I enjoy your style Keni Lee, and thanks for your lessons too, they have helped me allot, as I am a beginner. Thanks for sharing.

  • Thank you. Please feel free to write if you have any questions. I'm glad you are enjoying my page.

  • Awesome!

  • Thank you.

  • Sound as a pound!! Spot on. The Mutts nuts. Call it what you will. Man That is inspirational. (dont like the pants tho lol)But the Tunes is Finger-Lickin guuuuud. Kepp up the good work Man .and Thank you. :)

  • Thank you for the kind words. I get your point, but is that pound really sound today? Does that expression refer to weight or money? lol. My dog, Onyx was definately a show dog in a former life. Set up a camera and he is there! The pants are actually my pajamas. Might as well be comfy. Enjoy.

  • Hey man. Pound; Sound? who cares, Its Just great hearing your music man. I left a message on your myspace page. Play like that and there is a pot of gold waitin for you here in England. Keep doin good stuff KeniLee :)

  • Thank you. I hope to make it to England some day. Enjoy.

  • I'm loving your style brother. It's so good to see someone loving to play Delta these days.

  • Thank you for the encouragement. I am fascinated by the Open tuned guitar style of the Delta, fingerpicking and slide. The possibilities are endless. Enjoy.

  • I saw Bukka's original video.That awesome slapping.Your style is great too!

  • Thank you. Ya, old Bukka don't hold back. He slaps that Baby! Enjoy.

  • ohhh my god !!! great version of bukka !!!!

  • Thank you.

  • I wish I had a teacher like you.

Nowdays, it's hard to find someone to teach you the finger-slap of on Son House, the slide of B.W.Johnsson and the (Texas)finger-style pentatonic of Gary Davis I 'm trying to learn.

  • Thank you. I understand your frustration. If you cannot find a Country Blues teacher in your location, consider finding a summer musical camp or weekend seminar. I also train in martial arts for health, so I travel to Canada annually for instruction. A good workshop can give you enough to work on for a year. Also consider my instructional CDs. I will gladly answer any questions you ask. I know this is not as good as one on one, but if there is a will, there is a way. Happy Holidays. Enjoy.

  • I though I would also tell you, for martial arts training, I have traveled internationally to China, and Brasil. Every two years, the Association I belong to has a Director's Seminar in a different part of the world where a school is located. There are future plans to visit a school is Greece. So, don't be afraid to travel to study whatever interest you.

  • Thanks for the info, I 'm intrested in music, so I couldn't agree more that the best way to learn something is to travel and dig up music from the root where it is born.

Nevertheless, if any seminar that would involve blues visit Greece, I would be more than thankful to learn about it...Grettings from Greece

  • Sounds like a solid plan. I wonder if Bob Brozman ever toured in Greece? If he comes, he would be the man to see. Enjoy.

  • Great performance Keni, I especially love the beat you play during the lick where you slide up to the 12th fret over and over... man that sounds great! Also your dog is hilarious, he/she pops up from behind you right on queue when the song is over :)

  • Thank you. I'm using a small BOSS programmable drum machine. It takes some time to program bar by bar, but the changes make the finished production sound better. Practicing with it is sure a great way to tighten up your timing, especially if you spend most of your time playing solo. My dog Onyx always comes around when I set up the camera and tripod. Maybe he was a TV star in a former life. lol. Happy Holidays! Enjoy.

  • I dig man...I dig.

  • Thank you. Happy Holidays Enjoy.

  • Awesome! Such a talent!! Awesome swing on the guitar.

  • Thank you for the kind words.

  • Great talent, did ya make the box guitar yourself or ?

    Very Nice sound !!!

  • Thank you. It was built by a professional guitar builder here in New Jersey. He is available if you are interested in a custom guitar. Enjoy.

  • I don't understand too much of music, but you're playing even with a broke finger, you rule!

  • Thank you for your comment. BOTTLENECK SLIDE GUITAR is based on an early one string folk instrument called the Diddley-Bow, and the traditional playing style of Hawaiian Guitar. The early Blues Masters of the 1920s and 30s, would place a bottleneck from a wine bottle, or a short piece of metal pipe on their finger.

  • Using this as a slide, they could move up and down along the strings of a guitar imitating singing or the cries and moans of the human voice. Please check out my other videos. Enjoy.

  • the best version of jitterbug swing on youtube

  • Thank you for such a nice comment. Enjoy.

  • This is excellent. That's some nice sound from the guitar.

  • Thank you.

  • Hi there,

just discovered your vid whilst searching through you tube. Excellent guitar work. I've always loved this song but have never ever played it myself. keep up the great work.

    With love from the U.K.

  • Thank you. I always loved this song too. It took me awhile to figure out the "Slap the Baby" lick, but it was well worth it. All it reallys needs now is Sam playing the Washboard! Enjoy.

  • THose must have been some hugeAss cigars

  • Thank you for your comment. Please go to my page and see the video that describes my CBG. I was told this was a large retail size box that a store owner would use to display cigars.

  • excellent

  • Thank you.

  • Great job man, love the pants!

  • Thank you. Actually, these pants are my pajamas. I affectionately refer to them as my comfy pants.

  • Awsome job man. im also glad 2 see theres at least 1 other person out there besides me that plays a 6 string CBG. reall great once again

  • Thank you for your comment. I have this one and the Turbo Diddley 6 built by Kurt Schoen. Check him out at schoenguitars.
