You must not know very much contemporary music.

May I suggest you uncover a thing called "independent music." That does not mean the catch-all "indie." Have you at least heard Fugazi and Sonic Youth? Good points of entry if you like Nirvana. If you want to rip right into the good contemporary stuff that's not "too" out there, do a search for Lightning Bolt and give HEALTH a shot.

Grrrl Friend, Pissed Jeans, A.N.S., DrunkDriver, Nu Sensae, AIDS Wolf, the Reprobates, Vendetta, Pandora, Madkin, Mika Miko, Mentally Challenged, Nuklear Fear, the Homostupids... all good new bands. I swear, I wanna puke when somebody says that all music today is nothing but corporate kiddie crap. If you only look where the mainstream bullshit is, then mainstream bullshit is what you will get.
