Let's say that every nation on earth disarmed their nuclear weapons and destroyed them, the knowledge of how to make them still exists. Any future war that breaks out will immediately usher in nuclear weapons and they will be used to "stop the war", just like 1945. In a perverse way, the world is a more dangerous place without nuclear weapons that with them, because the likelihood of war is greater without them.

How is the likelihood of war greater without them? Since the nuclear bomb, we have had the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the Iraq War. And these are only the major ones the U.S. has been involved with. Nuclear weapons are simply not a deterrent for war.

The bomb was researched and created for the purpose of stopping the war. Truman really wanted to use that bomb and the Japanese were trying to negotiate a peace between the US and itself so Truman demanded unconditional surrender. Despite their willingness to negotiate a peace (after attacking the us), they were training men, women and children to fight to the death to protect the motherland and I can assure you more people would have died without the nukes.

WWII was nothing like the wars we are fighting right now. America suffered severely. There were shortages of everything. America was running at full capacity producing military stuff, not consumer stuff. Millions of our boys were killed and Americans wanted no more war. Had the imperial Japanese government remained in power, there would have been another war and America knew it. That is why they wanted UNCONDITIONAL surrender and that is why the Jap were trying to negotiate a sur with Russia.

It might have taken a decade, but Japan most likely would have invaded China and possibly started WW3. One of the reasons they didn't impose reparations was because they realized that reparations played a part in Hitler coming to power in Germany.

Japan didn't surrender until AFTER the 2nd bomb was dropped.

Japan wanted a peace treaty, they weren't willing to do an unconditional surrender. We can debate if that was a good idea or not, but that was the reality. Nobody knows what WOULD have happened had we allowed Japan to retain the same government. You don't seem to realize how bad the Japanese were and the human rights violations they did. They were doing experimental surgeries on people while awake and with no anesthesia, murdering unarmed civilians, sinking non-military ships...

The holocaust had just ended and Jews were the single biggest victim of it, so there was a lot of sympathy for the European Jews. But I agree that TODAY, Israel has become a racist, terroristic state who have destroyed the lives of the Palestinians. I believe that the thing to do is to fix the people behind the weapon rather than take away the weapon because those people will find another weapon to use that may be worse than the weapon that he had before.
