I don't understand this video at all. The "vet" is not wearing gloves, and he tells her she can do this herself with anything including a nail file!? Horrible! I watched this video because my dog needs her sacs emptied regularly and I wanted to see what they look like infected, so that if it ever got there I would take her to the vet immediately. This obviously isn't something that happened overnight. Poor dog. Plus the video is unprofessional! Was this filmed with a phone!? Very upsetting.

@MrsClippit Are you kidding!? This is way past the point of infection. They weren't "feeling for" the anal glands, the were cutting them open because they were so past the point of infection. And don't tell me to not get a dog or cat. I take care of my dog's glands on a regular basis, they would never get to this point. The person who owns this dog, and anyone who would let their pet's health get to this extremely horrifying and painful state should NEVER own a pet. It's neglect.

Well I wish I saw this 2 years ago when my bassets issue started. Hers looked exactly the same but the vet did nothing but put her on antibiotics. She would be healed by now. Thank you for posting. Very informative

my dog had to have this done but I would say the last 6 weeks her butt smelled like a rusty odor? go figure will I was wiping her with a wet paper towel & she yipped okay I took her to the vet and yep she had blocked glands! My sisters chihuahua has had to haveher dog expressed glands since the dog was born,I just heard on youtube from a vets office if you sprinkle flaxseed 1 tsp per 40 pounds on their food you wont have to keep having them expressed so I'm gonna try it to see if it works!

I don't think people realize just how quickly an infection can turn up. I have a male rat who's prone to abscesses and they develop quickly and without warning. My dog once woke up with a huge abscess under her eye, to no fault of our own. She was vetted that day, just like OP's dog who was taken in the next day.

I don't know what the hell all the abuse stuff is about, so I'll just get to the part where I say "ewwww...I bet that smelled nasty!" My elderly dog that just passed and two of my younger dogs (all chihuahuas) have to get their anal glands expressed on near a weekly basis. To prevent bankruptcy, I do it myself, so I know how nasty this stuff is. The little bit I extract from them stinks up the whole room. I can't image what that little office smelled like after he lanced those huge sacs.

@NadiaTatyana I think it's different. When they're impacted, you can express them by squeezing on either side of the anus or with a lubed finger in the anus and squeezing either side one at a time between thumb and forefinger. But when they're infected, I guess there's a different method.

What an asinine comment. Just shows you have an extremely limited knowledge of animal care. This is an issue which can come on very quickly for the animal, and the owner did exactly the right thing. But perhaps you spend hours each day staring at a dog's anus so that you may see the second a problem such as this occurs.
