  • Love you videos btw, and I want to add a tip for anyone who doesn't care for the slick "grip" ('cause there isn't really a grip at all) on the Bushman: I wrapped the handle with hockey tape, and finished it off with 3M High Performance Liquid Hockey Tape

Give it a lot of time to set (like, a couple of weeks). Perfect grip!

  • I always thought it was recommended in very cold weather you take an axe? I split kindling etc with my knife, and saw an axe for larger. But still the cold steel held up well. though I think it is ugly and would put the money towards a nicer knife.

  • did he say i abuse my wife at :36

  • @tyrone5643 No, that was at :39.

  • dumbass, that's not how you baton through a knot. the easiest way is to go straight through the middle.

  • @aseglkj Easy now. This dumbass has feelings too.

  • Stick breaks* "Breaking my batons." Brings out a log* XD hilarious

  • I will buy one

  • Nice vid....those bushmans look pretty unbeatable for the money. I will have to get one for summer camp trips.

  • am not sure i would trust that knife

  • If you needed a knife specifically for batoning, would you pick that knife or a different one from them? I'm trying to find the best knife for batoning wood so I can add it to my bug-out bag for making fires, but I don't know squat about knives. So far I know of just Coldsteel and Ka-Bar but don't know how to pick the best knife for splitting wood baton-style. Thank you for any advice on this.

  • @coppergears88 The best knife for chopping wood is a nice small axe. Something like the Gerber gator axe or another small light axe. Then you can have a decent full tang knife as a general utility knife on your side as well as skinner for game. This way you beat the axe up and cut down on energy. Check out a knife like the Gerber prodigy knife as a all purpose knife. I have one and like it. I also have a bushman and its a good spear head, but I wouldn't want to chop with it.

  • @coppergears88 I really like their srk. It's a good size and weight with an excellent sheath. A lot of people like the kabar campanion but I think it's too heavy personally. You could probably get away with using a bushcraft style knife really, like the cs finn bear. But if you're dying to get a knife then I recommend something WITHOUT serrations. There are lots of custom knife makers that are very competitive. Bryan Breeden is one of them.

  • @coppergears88

Do a search for youtube member noss4 and look at some of his videos and abuse of knives on what holds up or not. A really hard metal can hold a sharper edge longer but may be a little on the brittle side on hard impacts. Cheaperthandirt(dot)com has a $10 survival knife that can take a lot of abuse, get a few extra of these as backups, gifts, and if shtf to barter with. I like the Ontario spec 8 for batoning, a Ghurka Kukri design for chopping or a hatchet.

  • @coppergears88 becker bk2 all day

  • @UNDEADcountry thats my choice as well

  • Looks like you had fun :)

  • @csknives How cool that Cold Steel left a comment on one of my videos. If you can't tell from my adventures I really dig your products. I had a blast on that camping trip and I can't wait to do it again in a couple of weeks.

  • @envirosponsible I'm glad you like our products. I'll be watching with interest :)

  • Stop killing trees let them live you animals!

  • wrap the handle in paracord to kill the vibes

  • So much for the theory that only (fully) flat ground blades are good for chopping and batoning. That sabre grind did very well.

  • this review actually impressed the crap out of me.. great video. i will condiser purchasing this knife

  • Excellent review sir. You (partially) inspired me to get one (there were other videos and reviews), though I chose the bowie style since it looked like it would make a better spear.

I bought it because no edged weapon collection should be considered complete without a good solid socketed spear, but I find myself knocking it off the shaft and using it as a knife all the time when I'm out in the bush. When deployed as a spear, the sheath can be used as a pouch to store other stuff as well.

  • @cujo55544 , I thought the standard one would make better spear, cause it's narrower therefore easier to penetrate~

  • @Taiwan168888 Yeah, I figured the bowie was slightly more symmetrical with a more 'centered' point.

I'm definitely thinking of buying myself a standard model too though, because yeah, narrower. One just ain't enough.

  • @cujo55544 , thanks for the reply,

the bowie one indeed looks more like a spear, and the other side can actually be sharpened~

In Taiwan there's only the bowie version. The standard one is a old version with a seam at handle, though it's made in Taiwan.

  • MAN I am impressed with all of you demos but this batoning video is SICK!!! I will own a Bushman now and it is because of this video and your fantastic effort! Thank you very much. Just FANTASTIC!!!

  • when you took out the giant batons i was like, "what is he, OH SHI"

  • I'm buying this as a bushknife, its awesomely cheap its 30£ here trying to get my bushcraft / survival kit setup.

  • @HomeMadeGunNut Did you buy one yet?

  • @envirosponsible Nope i'll tell you what i think of it when i do though :)

  • I'M SOLD! :D

  • hi.....is there any video to show how well coldsteel bushman handle bones? i like to have one to use it for hunting wildboar. am frm malaysia. my name is max. please email me if there is a review about this.

  • @maxoneheart it will work great on bones ;)

  • most of you guys use such small batons ,,,, makes for a lot of work ,,, my batons are almost twice the width

  • Oak??!! Damn harder than steel isn't it? Lol. I just used my 12 inch spear machete by cold steel, works great. My CS 18 inch Bowie took care of cutting up willow branches. One hit through 2 inch limbs. Love machetes.

  • @dinkco45 super soft steel maybe, but not SK5

  • bent my blade pretty good batoning some oak. still like the knife but i use my Kabar heavy bowie for all my batoning needs now.

  • I bought 5. Gave 3 away as gifts and kept two. One sits in a custom kydex sheath and one in my truck with a survival sheath. I just dipped my survival bushmans handle in liquid rubber. Let it dry overnight and it gives much better grip and reduces vibes. A landyard helps with the swing while chopping.

  • @dinkco45 great idea with the rubber.

  • how it it with rust resistance?

  • I bought one of these after seeing it for only $20 and after seeing all the amazing vids on it on youtube. Hell of a knife.

  • Awesome demo, man. I'm looking for a good knife to take camping and hiking, and this would definitely be a good option. Thanks.

  • i love em, own 3.

one for a hiking spear. one for batoning with saw/fie kit attached. and one back up bowie version with extended handle.

  • Canadian army winter gear ! Sweet

  • just picked one of these up because of this vid.. thanks man.

  • Very nice knife and well done of the video

  • You can also turn the Bushman in a hatchet by putting a short stick into the handle. I'd prefer that over batoning because the blade isn't really that thick.

  • can get any kitchen knife troo that if u hit strong enough anyway this busman looks rly temtping to bad here in europe its dubble the price of american :/ price

  • @odiloglobocnik I'd like to see you put the extremely soft and thin steel of a kitchen knife through a piece of wood like that with batoning.

  • Great Video!!! I am getting one of these a a few weeks, it should be fun. You should pick up some para-cord and wrap the handle, that's what I plan on doing.

  • awesome video, i did the same thing with the bowie version of the blade, pretty much the same results. i really enjoyed this video :)

  • what parka u rockin?

  • Thumbs up 5 stars. Thank You Love Barbara

  • Frozen wood can be harder on a knife than in the summer, you may want to carry the extra weight of a hachet during the winter but it's a personal choice.

  • wow...that's incredible for a knife that costs less than $20

  • you should try a wetherlings axe there sharp enough to shave the hairs off your arm

  • The outfit you are wearing seems to be confy and warm! Would you mind reviewing it for us? Thanks again Chad!

  • @giutoniolo

Yeah man, hes styling. Though I didn't get a great look, I think it is US Military Surplus. I remember similar cold weather gear in the Marine Corps.

  • Chad, how do you like the BK2 compared to the Cold steel Bushman youre using there! Thanks for the video my friend!

  • hey! what boots are you wearing and what do you think of them? are these white kamiks? thank you!

  • I put my Bushman through a log that was a good 4-5 inches thick, and it handled it awesomely.

    Not bad for the money.

Though I do love my Kabar heavy bowie.

  • Have you ever thought about getting a Condor Hudson Bay knife? It seems like a pretty good knife, besides having a not-so-good when wet wooden handle

  • i'll be ordering the bowie version of this beast soon.

  • would you recomend a coldsteel bushman over one of cold steel's machetes?

  • @applejews6497 depends on what you will you be using it for.

  • Mountain bike tube... Cut a piece and slide it over the handle. It helps with the cold and vibration. I just don't like the handle change. But for a $20 knife it's hard to beat.

  • I have one bushman but with bowie blade i think for the money are more then great knife.

  • Wow! and you were hitting out on the tip as well!

  • What are your boots? Or what is covering them?

  • Nice knife. I still trust in my DH Russel knife but that one looks like a good big brother to have next to my Russel. THe Russel is small but very sturdy and Canadian made. I have had is since my initial Ships Diver course in '86. Thanks for your review.

  • Great Review and work, thanks for showing. All the best Sepp PS: Your right with the vibration, which are very low in comparison to other knifes.

  • got one too, the only bad thing bout the bushman is the worthless piece of crap sheath

  • @nephildevil

Granted, the factory sheath isn't as "cool" as many others on the market. However, when you are out tromping in the wood, especially in a snow, it only take a knife dumping out once for you to appreciate a nice deep with a gimble style belt loop sheath as comes with the bushman.

  • @Grimganker mine fell out of the sheath, in the snow, got lucky i didnt venture far from camp or i'd lost it.

it has nothing to do with being "cool" the sheath is worthless, it doesnt even hold the knife, the only use it has, is protecting stuff from its point and edge, that is until the knife slips out

  • @nephildevil Make a Kydex one. It's awesome !

  • @wilcox1219 lol i made one from old leather boots, cardboard and duct tape for my machete once, but i'm afraid thats how far my sheath making skills take me :D

  • Looks good Chad. Glad to see you survived you winter camp. I'm looking forward to the other reviews

    Nate

  • Do you think it would be harder to baton with the bowie model?

  • Bushman has it's place and I keep one in my BOB & one in a cache. I've found wrapping handle with 550 cord helps with vibration, then put a piece of inner tube tire over it. They don't hold an edge very long under heavy use, but are very easily sharpened.

  • Yeh but a nice manace, nice tuff versy blade.

  • Cold Steel is top notch.

  • Great knive would love to have one in the future.

  • Dude it's 16.99 on poorfish + 7.50shipping. That's the knife I carry on my trips. Try and use the other knives as a spear. And try not to cry if u spend to much on the other knives and u loose it or chip it. I carry one on it's own belt and one on my pack. All for 40. Bucks

  • @heyxilong The owner of this channel lives in Canada and that is where he bought the knife, so pricing will vary. Still for $33 it is much cheaper than more popular knives out there.

  • Have one of my own just have not had the chance to baton with it. It's a great piece of equipment for the price. Have to keep the blade oiled though.

  • another one to put on my wish list...thnx
