@thegrouchmonster101 If you get the hydrophobic coating on your hands, it's going to be very hard to wash off because it repels water. In my experience, however, you really have to rub the sand all over your hands to get the coating to rub off on your skin like that.
@KhmaiBodian559 It might bind with some of the stuff that's in the juice or soda, and drag it down to the bottom. Magic Sand does bind with oil, so it might bind with other things as well. It just might be hard to see what's going on unless you use very light or clear juice or soda.
This sand is fun to play with but it is really irritating when some of it remains floating on the surface of the water, especially when you scoop some out
@SuperJeffhardyfan01 Yes. Moon Sand is lightweight and somewhat powdery. It can be molded into shapes and will stick together. Then it can be crumbled back into sand. Magic Sand is gritty. It is actual sand that has been coated with coloring and a hydrophobic substance that is a little shiny. It does not pack together. Magic Sand sinks in water. Moon Sand usually floats.
@MrRcheek This can be obtained without assaulting bees. And if bee pollen is also hydrophobic, you could certainly do a demonstration comparing and contrasting both. Our main market is teachers, so our products are usually made for classroom demonstrations and experimentation.
@fedupwithusernames@EducateInnovate Hydrophobic sand or "magic sand" was created to contain oil spills in large bodies of waters. It was to expensive to make so they don't use it for that anymore though.
@kalloused That's interesting. I did not know that. We now sell an Oil Spill Cleanup Kit that has a variety of substances that students can test out for that purpose. Magic Sand is not among them.
@EducateInnovate Yeah,other cheaper and more effective means have been intorduced since then. But "magic sand" is now being expieremented with gardening in very dry desert areas. Coating clay and sand region with the magic sand minimizes absorptions to help people grow crops I think is the working theory. There is a youtube video about it somewhere. So they are still finding more positive uses for it.
IF THIS BECOMES A TOP COMMENT I WILLL GET THIS FOR EVERY ONE LOL

@EducateInnovate
well i guess i rubbed the sand a lot , and it was not hard to wash off , i used soap ?
thegrouchmonster101 7 months ago
@thegrouchmonster101 That is good. I suppose it would be a handy way to make oneself water repellent. Fortunately, soap will still work.

@EducateInnovate That's the whole point of soap! :D

What happens if you stir the sand into the water..?

@Sephu It will settle down into clumps rather than mixing in with the water.

@fedupwithusernames Why does it need to serve a purpose? We use it to teach about hydrophobic polymers and discrepant events.
