It needs the tail for hunting. It will chase a school of fish to the surface, than whip the school to stun/kill some of them. Thus getting easy to catch prey.
I love this video!!! The thresher has always been my favorite shark because of it's body size, 25 ft. 1 ft. longer then a great white, and how it's tail is half its body legnth!
Love this shark, it has always been my favorite because of its huge size (25 ft, 1 ft longer then a great white) and how its tail is half its body legnth
The thresher shark can use its sharp tail fin to cut coral of the reef and later eats it of the sea floor. They are indeed very docile and are known to be friendly.
i saw an episode of blue planet on discovery where they were filming the threshers off malapascua then.. BOOM!! dynamite fishermen.. embarrassing scene.
Its odd to see two together isn't it? aren't they usually solitary sharks?
And great job shooting this. This is one of the first videos of a thresher shark in its natural habitat without it being ripped out of the water and torn apart in the hands of a spoiled man who does it for sport. It just disgusts me to see these gorgeous animals go endangered because of a few assholes who got 'the big one'
Its a cleaning station (monad shoal) the sharks come from hundreds of miles away to be cleaned by smaller fish that eat the parasites and debris from their body, you can see one following the first shark, perhaps the other shark is waiting its turn :-)
We found one today that had beached in Newport Beach, CA during lifeguard training. I believe it was a pelagic thrasher due to the fact that we have a nasty red tide and squid are washed up all over our beach!
@sergei430amg this is a veryyy late reply..4 years late to be exact lol.. and no they are very docile creatures.. they would only attack as a form of defense if you bother them..just like any other animal
Man, i love the thresher shark...apparently there is a story that a man was looking out of the side of his boat and a thresher shark whipped its tail out and cut his head off...haha, seems kinda bogus to me
To tell u the truth.. this is the very first time I've seen this type of shark on video. Not even Animal Planet has filmed this shark to my knowledge.. I've only seen them in books when I was like in elementary school back in 1994 - 1996
Thresher sharks wouldn't hurt you i doubt. I don't think any shark would intentionally. But I have only heard of bogus Thresher attacks. Like the beheading... i doubt it would be able to because most of its tail power is when it is swimming under water.

You would think that tail would through them off ballance, but they swim very gracefully.

Damn! What does it need that huge tail for???
randomdude581 1 year ago
Thresher sharks are harmless to humans but, that tail is used to kill schools of fish, so you better be careful of that tail.

I was just wondering what they eat. They don't appear to have big jaws. They look pretty docile.
