  • Cool, I just filmed a Zebra last night with a macro lense attempting to get a good close-up. I'll have to post it.

  • I love how it jumps onto the door panel at 0:40. You can see it briefly get ready, and see the web line it put down for safety in case the jump didn't work. :p

  • @retread01

    Yeh, love it! Well spotted.

  • Question: Can zebra spiders bite? For years, since i was born practically, i have been picking spiders up and throwing them out into the garden when my mum or sister scream in terror at the sight of a spider, but this one i was introduced to a couple years ago bit me. Now i have developed a sort of apprehension towards picking up spiders now. But i use a cup now to pick them up now co's i still like to save them.

  • these spiders tend to relax in the sun in our garden ;)

  • Apparently those are the palps it waved at me. So your spider did it too? Aha...

  • I like zebra spiders. I remember once I had one on my garden wall. They have reasonably good eyesight for a spider and this particular one followed my finger. I got a blade of grass and it reared up and waved its front legs - brave little thing!

  • I like Zebra spiders: Cute (look at it move its head at 0:31!) and unbeleveably smart.

  • No, they are tiny.

My camera was less than 1 inch away, at it's closest. : )

  • Do these spiders bite people?

  • Me too! Spiders are awe-inspiring creatures, and the jumpers are fantastic. All those eyes, the abseiling skills, the way they hunt... amazing. { : D

  • i got one like 10x bigger then this :D

  • oh yeah any tips on feeding her.ive been feeding her once every two days is that to often or not often enough the flies i feed her are slightly bigger than her though

  • Spiders are usually able to g without food for a long time.

But if she's taking and feeding she must be hungry. Is prey dead or alive? If you have got her eating dead stuff i'm IMPRESSED.

If it is female, and she's eating a lot, maybe she's a growing girl, and maybe you can expect eggs later this summer?

  • ive only seen her eating live flies but i suspect she may be eating the dead as i put a moth in with her a few days after its death i saw that the moths legs had been ripped off and were hanging at the top of the jar

  • also they say these spiders like the sun.but i think that i shouldnt put her near the sun whenever i do she goes back to her little den

  • i cant let it out because my mother hates spiders the only reason she lets me keep it is because it is in its hidey hole all the time(i put twigs in its jar that i keep it in and it put some together with some of its web and it stays in there for most of the day only coming out in the mornings and sometimes at night)the jar is pretty big she has plent of space to move in as she is pretty small.another thing on all of the info sites it they say that zebra jumpers dont spin webs.mine does

  • You're right, jars aren't a good idea. They have lots to do that requires more space, including the mating you mentioned, plus hibernation, etc.

How about keeping it on a window (out of the sun) for a while and feed it in that place (maybe on a piece if blu-tac) then after a few days leave the lid off. See if it returns to the feeding spot, where you can continue to leave food.

    Just an idea...

  • these are the only spider that dont scare me there as pahkwesikan1 said very cute.i found one siting on my x-box 360 a couple of weeks ago and decided to catch it.they really do make good pets.mine is a female zebra jumper like the one on your video i was thinking is there anything else aside from flies that i can feed it? i love how its rival is the hobo spider(common house spider)thats bigger than the zebra jumper but the zebra still has the power to take it down.

  • Maybe try aphids as prey. Should be plenty available in the garden or at the nearest rose bush.

  • erm... its rubbing its pedipalps together... i don't think thats the threat display :x

  • Well it scared the pants off me.

  • as much as it scares you... its still not a threat display :D

I dislike spiders too... the only ones that i don't mind about are jumping spiders. they're cute to me ^-^

males have the big pedipalps and females have small ones... and females are much bigger (most if not all spiders) ;)

  • Oh, I see, it's just me!

Thanks for the comments, I'm always grateful to be able to learn more. : )

  • What? Most prolific type of spider? Funny, I would not have expected that.

Glad you're enjoying the group - please do post your clips and I'll try to 'approve' them as fast as I can, so people get to see them. Regards - J.

  • Cool. I've observed the Zebra Spider many times. Did you know that there are actually many species of "jumpig spider"? It's true - if I recall the jumping spider is the most prolific and common spider on earth.

I like this group - TY for inviting me to partiicipate.

Sincerely - Joe in Glover Vermont - USA
