in the movie, in the bar room scene, it shows jack drinking jack daniel's whiskey. hmmmm. jack was drinking jack daniels. i don't recall whether the original novel showed jack drinking jack daniel's whiskey, but i do recall that the original novel said that the real name of jack was john daniel torrance. thus, we have jack daniel drinking jack daniel's whiskey.
It would be funny to make a short upload. Show Llyod saying: "What'll it be?" Then show Rutger Hauer saying (from blade runner) saying: "I want more life fucker." Then cut back to Lloyd saying "Burbon on the rocks" (from Jack's 2nd visit), and before it cuts back from Lloyd back to Jack, include the sound bite of jack saying: "that'll do'er."
Think about the message: Lloyd the bartender knows the difference between sour mash and bourbon. he served Jack Daniels for a reason: Jack (Jack Torrance) Daniels (Danny Torrance), you see?

@califgirl101 No it's not. It's sour mash. Taste is different. Try Buffalo Trace vs Jack. BIG difference, but both are whiskey, albeit Buffalo Trace is (bourbon whiskey). Bourbon ONLY comes from Kentucky.
Jack is for college students who don't know good stuff. It's so easy to buy crap, without having a mentor or someone to help. Luckily I learned early on that bourbon is important for several drinks Old Fashioneds, High Ball (soda water and bourbon), and Mint Juleps (superior to Mojitos). con-
part 2, Eagle is good, and Grant (former president) was a fan of Old Crow, even though it's bottom shelf.
Bourbon isn't expensive, it's just one of those things that requires a real dedicated drinker to enjoy. You shouldn't be slamming it down unless you enjoy it (the taste, not the action).
@ArnoldTohtFan Very Good Question! I have checked into this recently myself as I was puzzled. White Man's Burden is a saying that dates back to the early 1900s and has historically linked to colonialism or white man enforcing his culture and way of life to the minority. If you read more about this film, you will find many other clues and references used by Kubrick that reveal he was delivering a sub-story under the main plot, which was the genocide of native americans. Do searches & read on.

A bartender with a glib smile dressed entirely in red appears out of nowhere and gives him whiskey without taking money. I'm no praying man, but isn't that straaaange.....?

I'm totally going to use the "words of wisdom" quote for my history class, as a little bonus footage at the end.

I love Joe Turkel in this scene. He's been in a lot of movies, but to me, he'l always be Lloyd the bartender.
