He's right, it will have social costs just like alcohol. The only difference is the tax would be far greater than the practically non-existent social cost of legalization. What do we have to worry about, fender benders???? Pot is not alcohol, and it just doesn't fuck people up the same. I know at least 20+ daily smokers, all of whom probably drive almost every day at least a little high. Some of these same people have DUI's and none of them have drug convictions, and they drink less.

legalizing a substance may increase use but i will decrease abuse. In Holland for example (the only country where you can legally buy marijana in coffeeshops) the use is at a normal level but we have very few (homeless) junkies.

of activities that are bad/harmful but still ought to be legal. This would refute the chief's main argument that pot should be illegal because you ought not to use it.

For example, staying up all night, cheating on your girlfriend, being late for work, etc. are all things that we should teach our kids not to do, but society is nevertheless better off not criminalizing them.

THANK YOU! That's the conclusion I've recently come to myself. There won't be any lost funding or jobs in law enforcement, it'll just be re-allocated to combating other crimes. And that's bad news for cops, because that's just extra work right there. And I can see why they'd prefer not to mess with heavily-armed, dangerous criminals when they can arrest a guy who's watching cartoons and eating Funyuns.

But "We'd have to do more work!" doesn't generate much sympathy with Middle America.

The chief calls cannabis "a psychoactive, addictive or dependency developing substance that people are better off not having in their lives". Not only are tobacco, alcohol and coffee-the big three "legal" substance's that share that same description-more destructive to human life than cannabis, so is CHEESE!

There is NO doubt in my mind that my addiction to dairy products has been a far greater detriment to my life than cannabis.

Medical terminology doesn't scare me. I got a solid "A" in that class. Cops talk shit most often because they are taught to believe bullshit. I agree 100% (except low on brains lol) I used to be in the Australian military and was instantly discharged without hesitation for testing positive after smoking a single joint. I was led to believe what I had done endangered the lives of others even though my job entailed nothing more than sitting at a desk all day typing.
